Book Numerical simulations of the circulation of the eastern Mediterranean

Download or read book Numerical simulations of the circulation of the eastern Mediterranean written by Despina Grillaki and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceanographic observations have shown that the surface circulation in the eastern Mediterranean consists of the zonal North African Current along with systems of gyres and rings both north and south of the Current. A large cyclonic gyre occurs between Cyprus and Crete, and another between Greece and Libya. A weaker, quasi-permanent eddy is formed in the Ionian sea and is intensified by the flow through the Strait of Sicily. An anticyclonic ring occurs south of the North African Current in the Gulf of Sirte and another occurs in the southwest Levantine Sea. The reduced-gravity model (one active layer) of Hurlburt and Thompson has been adapted and applied to the semi-enclosed basin of the eastern Mediterranean. Using monthly averages of climatological wind stresses and the estimate of the annual mean flow through the Strait of Sicily, numerical simulations of the circulation in the eastern Mediterranean basin have been carried out. Model runs both with and without inflow through the Straits have been performed. The overall results agree with the observations. They show the presence of the North African Current, two persistent cyclonic gyres of varying strengths and two anticyclonic rings.

Book Mediterranean Climate Variability

Download or read book Mediterranean Climate Variability written by P. Lionello and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-08-22 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multi-authored book provides an updated description of climate variability in the Mediterranean basin, focusing on decadal and centennial time scales and on the results available on the impact of future emission scenarios at regional scale. The authors describs both local physical processes responsible for these variability - such as changes in the surface properties and land use- and globalprocesses - such as changes in the large scale atmospheric circulation associated to global warming, NAO, tropical monsoon and ENSO. Regional climate change issues are also addressed. Mediterranean Climate Variability aims to review the research on this region and to provide at the same time both an introduction and a reference for researchers. It covers topics typical of Climatology, Climate history, Meteorology, Oceanography, Environmental Science but the information here provided would also be useful for research in agriculture, social and economic studies. It is addressed to scientists and students interested in the Mediterranean climate and environment. Some topics have interesting connections to nearby regions: Northern Atlantic, West Africa, central and Eastern Europe. Each chapter will contain a summary meant to provide information to policy makers, researchers from other fields, and in general to a wide audience without a technical expertise on climate. * Provides an updated analysis of the Mediterranean climate features and guidelines for future research * Considers both oceanographic and atmospheric aspects * Analyzes the Mediterranean climate in a global perspective

The Conference was organized by the Israel Institute for Biological Research, Department of Mathematics, which is involved in Environmental Risk Evaluation, and in Projects Estimating the Potential of Wind Energy. The lectures cover a broad spectrum of mathematical models, ranging from those that deal with the solution of atmospheric conservation equations, and to those models that yield empirical estimates based on real time measure ments and thus are unique to the locale where measured. The goal of the Conference was to allow scientists from various countries to meet and discuss topics of mutual interest, including the following: 1. Structure of the boundary layer - primarily models dealing in the understanding of the various processes of atmospheric energy transfer, and their influence on the size and composition of the boundary 1 ayer. 2. Advanced mathematical techniques for describing flow and diffusion - lectures on approximations and techniques for solving the diffu sion and transport equations. 3. Flow over complex terrain - research into various aspects of the problem - mathematical models, physical models, experimental results. 4. Models of pollution transport and deposition.

Book Preventive Methods for Coastal Protection

Download or read book Preventive Methods for Coastal Protection written by Tarmo Soomere and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to present for non-specialist researchers as well as for experts a comprehensive overview of the background, key ideas, basic methods, implementation details and a selection of solutions offered by a novel technology for the optimisation of the location of dangerous offshore activities in terms of environmental criteria, as developed in the course of the BalticWay project. The book consists of two parts. The first part introduces the basic principles of ocean modeling and depicts the long way from the generic principles to the practical modeling of oil spills and of the propagation of other adverse impacts. The second part focuses on the techniques for solving the inverse problem of the quantification of offshore areas with respect to their potential to serve as a source of environmental danger to vulnerable regions (such as spawning, nursing or also tourist areas). The chapters are written in a tutorial style; they are mostly self-contained and understandable for non-specialist researchers and students. They are carefully peer-reviewed by international experts. The goal was to produce a book that highlights all key steps, methods, models and data sets it is necessary to combine in order to produce a practically usable technology and/or decision support system for a particular sea region. Thus the book is useful not only as a description and a manual of this particular technology but also as a roadmap highlighting the complicated technical issues of ocean modeling for practical purposes. It describes the approaches taken by the authors in an understandable way and thus is useful for educational purposes, such as a course in industrially and environmentally relevant applications of ocean modeling.

Book Mixing Processes and Circulation Pattern Off Egyptian Mediterranean

Download or read book Mixing Processes and Circulation Pattern Off Egyptian Mediterranean written by Elsharkawy Mohamed and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamical computations of the mixing parameters: buoyancy frequency, turbulent kinetic energy, viscous dissipation, Reynolds stress, diffusive salt flux, and diffusive heat flux have been carried out. The results show that generally, vertical mixing and dynamic instability is stronger in the surface layers. The numerical modeling of mixing indicate that turbulence plays a small role in mixing production. However, shear and viscous dissipation are essential in the dynamical process of vertical turbulent mixing. Buoyancy intermittently has a substantial role in vertical mixing. The current regime along the Egyptian Mediterranean coast has been investigated by two methods; the analysis of current measurements, and numerical simulation by using Princeton Ocean Model (POM). The analysis of current measurements showed that the magnitude and direction of the current changes continuously, however, the general pattern is an eastern to south eastern flow induced by the prevailing north-west wind, with a magnitude generally less than 20 cm/s. The numerical modeling of surface currents induced by wind stress over the sea surface, and density distribution revealed a similar patter.

Book Ocean Modeling and Parameterization

Download or read book Ocean Modeling and Parameterization written by Eric P. Chassignet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The realism of large scale numerical ocean models has improved dra matically in recent years, in part because modern computers permit a more faithful representation of the differential equations by their algebraic analogs. Equally significant, if not more so, has been the improved under standing of physical processes on space and time scales smaller than those that can be represented in such models. Today, some of the most challeng ing issues remaining in ocean modeling are associated with parameterizing the effects of these high-frequency, small-space scale processes. Accurate parameterizations are especially needed in long term integrations of coarse resolution ocean models that are designed to understand the ocean vari ability within the climate system on seasonal to decadal time scales. Traditionally, parameterizations of subgrid-scale, high-frequency mo tions in ocean modeling have been based on simple formulations, such as the Reynolds decomposition with constant diffusivity values. Until recently, modelers were concerned with first order issues such as a correct represen tation of the basic features of the ocean circulation. As the numerical simu lations become better and less dependent on the discretization choices, the focus is turning to the physics of the needed parameterizations and their numerical implementation. At the present time, the success of any large scale numerical simulation is directly dependent upon the choices that are made for the parameterization of various subgrid processes.
