Book Numerical Simulation of the PEP II Beam Position Monitor

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of the PEP II Beam Position Monitor written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors use MAFIA to analyze the PEP-II button-type beam position monitor (BPM). Employing proper termination of the BPM into a coaxial cable, the output signal at the BPM is determined. Thus the issues of signal sensitivity and power output can be addressed quantitatively, including all transient effects and wakefields. Besides this first quantitative analysis of a true BPM 3D structure, they find that internal resonant modes are a major-source of high value narrow-band impedances. The effects of these resonances on coupled-bunch instabilities are discussed. An estimate of the power dissipation in the ceramic vacuum seal under high current operation is given.

Book Design of the Button Beam Position Monitor for PEP II

Download or read book Design of the Button Beam Position Monitor for PEP II written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beam position monitor (BPM) was designed to provide a robust UHV feedthru and a reliable electromagnetic sensor. Stringent resolution requirements at low beam currents, bunch parameters, along with mechanical and chamber requirements produced challenges in the electrical, thermal, and structural design of the BPM's. Numerical modeling and experimental analyses were used to optimize the design. The higher order modes (HOM's) and beam impedance were modeled using MAFIA. Measurements agreed with the calculated 1[Omega] transfer impedance at the 952 MHz signal processing frequency, and the first two HOM's found in MAFIA. Tests and analysis both showed the button signal power approaching 40 W. Temperature and stress distributions were analyzed using this power loading with ANSYS. An electronic grade CuNi was selected for the BPM to reliably weld into the copper chambers. Pin seal and compressive joints were considered for the insulator vacuum seals. Both glassy ceramic-to-metal and ceramic-to-metal seals were evaluated.

Book Beam Position Monitor System for PEP II

Download or read book Beam Position Monitor System for PEP II written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe the beam position monitor system built for PEP-II, the B-factory at SLAC. The system reports beam position for bunches of between 5 x 108 and 8 x 101° electron charges, either singly or as continuous streams of bunches every 4.2 ns. Resolution at full charge is to be better than 10 microns in a single turn. Higher resolution is available via on-board multi-turn averaging. The position signal is processed in a 20 MHz bandwidth around 952 MHz. This bandwidth, rather broader than that typical of RF position monitors, allows good resolution for low charge single bunches. Additional novel features include stringent control of return losses in order to minimize cross-talk between nearby bunches which may contain very different charges. The digitizing electronics is multiplexed between the two PEP-II storage rings. Design, construction, and installation experience, as well as first results with beam are presented.

Book Calibration of the Beam position Monitor System for the SLAC PEP II B Factory

Download or read book Calibration of the Beam position Monitor System for the SLAC PEP II B Factory written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beam-Position Monitors (BPM) for the PEP-II B Factory consist of four 1.5-cm diameter button style pickups mounted on the diagonals of the quadrupole vacuum chambers. Before installation of the vacuum chambers in the quadrupole assemblies, the electrical center of the BPMs is measured with respect to the mechanical center in a calibration test stand. In this paper the calibration test stand is described and the precision and accuracy of the calibrations are presented. After installation of the quadrupole assemblies in the PEP-II tunnel, the passive attenuation for each channel of the system is measured to preserve the accuracy of the calibration. Finally, the active electronics includes an onboard calibrator. Results for these portions of the calibration are presented.

Book Numerical Modeling of Beam environment Interactions in the PEP II B Factory

Download or read book Numerical Modeling of Beam environment Interactions in the PEP II B Factory written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The PEP-II B-Factory is designed to operate at high currents with many bunches (1658) to achieve the luminosity required for physics studies. Interactions of a beam with its environment in a storage ring raise various issues of concern for accelerator physics, mechanical design and device performance. First, for accelerator physics, wakefields generated by interactions of a beam with beamline components, if not properly controlled, will drive single-bunch and coupled-bunch instabilities. The total broad-band impedance of the ring cannot exceed a budget limited by single-bunch effects. The growth rate of a coupled-bunch mode contributed from narrow-band impedance should be smaller than the damping rate due to synchrotron radiation; otherwise, suppression by feedback control will be necessary. Second, the energy loss by a beam at a beamline component in the form of higher-order-mode (HOM) power leads to additional heating on the component, and to TE mode radiation through openings on vacuum chamber walls. Last, calculations of transfer and beam impedances of pickup and kicker devices are essential for improving their performance and for identifying trapped modes. To address these issues quantitatively requires numerical simulations of each beamline component which include the realistic geometry and the relevant physics involved in the particular beam-environment interactions.

Book Some Solved Problems with the SLAC PEP II B Factory Beam Position Monitor System

Download or read book Some Solved Problems with the SLAC PEP II B Factory Beam Position Monitor System written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beam-Position Monitor (BPM) system for the SLAC PEP-II B-Factory has been in operation for over two years. Although the BPM system has met all of its specifications, several problems with the system have been identified and solved. The problems include errors and limitations in both the hardware and software. Solutions of such problems have led to improved performance and reliability. In this paper the authors report on this experience. The process of identifying problems is not at an end and they expect continued improvement of the BPM system.

Book Single Bunch Stability in LER of PEP II

Download or read book Single Bunch Stability in LER of PEP II written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The note describes results of studies of the single bunch stability in the low energy ring (LER) of the PEP-II B-factory. Simulations describe the potential well distortion (PWD) obtained by numerical solution of the Haiisinski equation and results on the beam stability obtained with the code TRISIM. Both longitudinal and transverse wake fields are taken into account. Preliminary estimates indicate that single bunch in the LER of the PEP-II B-factory has to be stable, both longitudinally and transversely, at the maximum design bunch current 1.8 mA (beam current 3A). However, realistic wakes of the machine has been constructed only recently using results of the extensive numerical simulations of the vacuum components of the ring. Additional to that, the code TRISIM, a simulation program for single-bunch collective effects written by one of the authors (G.S.), became recently available. This allows us to study beam stability in a more reliable way than it is possible analytically.

Book Validation of PEP II Resonantly Excited Turn by Turn BPM Data

Download or read book Validation of PEP II Resonantly Excited Turn by Turn BPM Data written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For optics measurement and modeling of the PEP-II electron (HER) and position (LER) storage rings, we have been doing well with MIA [1] which requires analyzing turn-by-turn Beam Position Monitor (BPM) data that are resonantly excited at the horizontal, vertical, and longitudinal tunes. However, in anticipation that certain BPM buttons and even pins in the PEP-II IR region would be missing for the run starting in January 2007, we had been developing a data validation process to reduce the effect due to the reduced BPM data accuracy on PEP-II optics measurement and modeling. Besides the routine process for ranking BPM noise level through data correlation among BPMs with a singular-value decomposition (SVD), we could also check BPM data symplecticity by comparing the invariant ratios. Results from PEP-II measurement will be presented.
