Book A Numerical Model for Predicting Shoreline Changes

Download or read book A Numerical Model for Predicting Shoreline Changes written by Bernard LeMéhauté and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical model for long-term, three-dimensional shoreline evolution is developed. The combined effects of variations of sea level; wave refraction and diffraction; loss of sand by density currents during storms, by rip currents, and by wind; bluff erosion and berm accretion; effects of manmade structures such as long groin or navigational structures; and beach nourishment are all taken into account. A computer program is developed with various subroutines which permit modification as the state-of-the-art progresses. The program is applied to a test case at Holland Harbor, Michigan. (Author).

Book A User s Guide to the N line Model

Download or read book A User s Guide to the N line Model written by Norman W. Scheffner and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This user's manual provides the necessary guidance, complete with multiple example applications which include model input and output, for using the N-line numerical model. Capabilities of the model include the simulation of a) single or multiple shore-perpendicular structures, b) single or multiple detached offshore breakwaters, and c) disposal of material or dredging of material in the coastal zone. Model parameters are discussed in order to guide the potential user to a successful application of the model. The N-line model is versatile, easy to use, and capable of producing dependable results when used for appropriate applications. The documentation in this manual covers only the breakwater subroutine. Since conceptual modifications were not made to the original model, the original documentation, presented in CERC's report MR 83-10, should be obtained by any potential user of the model. The N-line model is useful in showing qualitative trends for a complex case such as Lakeview Park, Lorain, Ohio. Some of the drawbacks of the program when modeling Lakeview Park, such as the inability reach an equilibrium shoreline, and the low sinuosity of the shoreline when influenced by breakwater segments, could possibly be successfully modeled by modifying the different input parameters, such as the ADEAN parameter and/or initial shoreline location and/or the model code. Perhaps then a quantitative verification if the model could be made. However, in this case, the model would have then been tailored to produce a previously known result.

Book NUMERICAL MODELING OF SHORELINE CHANGES AROUND MANAVGAT RIVER MOUTH

Download or read book NUMERICAL MODELING OF SHORELINE CHANGES AROUND MANAVGAT RIVER MOUTH written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River mouths are very active coastal regions. Continuous sediment supply by the river and the movement by wave action cause the shoreline to change in time and space. Modeling of shoreline changes is an essential step before the design of any coastal engineering project. This research aimed to develop a system of numerical models to present the shoreline changes around a river mouth. The system of numerical models has three components: 1) modeling of nearshore wave characteristics, 2) modeling of longshore sand transport rates using the results of the first component, 3) modeling of shoreline changes using the estimated sand transport rates. Thus, firstly, deep water wave characteristics including the annual wave rose affecting Manavgat River mouth have been obtained from the database of NATO TU-WAVES Project. Then REF/DIF1 and SWAN nearshore wave models have been used to find out nearshore wave conditions. Since the results obtained from REF/DIF1 wave model have been found to be more reasonable compared to SWAN’s output, REF/DIF1 wave model has been used in preparing a time series nearshore reference wave file with three hours time interval. This reference file has been used to run GENESIS. Last step of the numerical shoreline change modelling of Manavgat River mouth was the calibration procedure in which the “transport parameters” k1 and k2 have been determined. As there is lack of measurements of shoreline positions that can be used in calibrating shoreline change model, k1 and k2 has been approximately found to be k1=0.516 and k2=0.9 by using an empirical sediment transport formula. As a future study, it is recommended that when the protection structure controlling the river mouth is finished, the measurements of shoreline position behind the structure should be used in verification of shoreline change model in order to get more accurate results.

Book Dynamics of the Coastal Zone

Download or read book Dynamics of the Coastal Zone written by Matteo Postacchini and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coastal zone is the host to many human activities, which have significantly increased in the last decades. However, sea level rise and more frequent storm events severely affect beaches and coastal structures, with negative consequences and dramatic impacts on coastal communities. These aspects add to typical coastal problems, like flooding and beach erosion, which already leading to large economic losses and human fatalities. Modeling is thus fundamental for an exhaustive understanding of the nearshore region in the present and future environment. Innovative tools and technologies may help to better understand coastal processes in terms of hydrodynamics, sediment transport, bed morphology, and their interaction with coastal structures. This book collects several contributions focusing on nearshore dynamics, and span among several time and spatial scales using both physical and numerical approaches. The aim is to describe the most recent advances in coastal dynamics.
