Book Damage Tolerance of Metallic Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Damage Tolerance of Metallic Aircraft Structures written by Sérgio M. O. Tavares and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a state-of-the-art review of the fail-safe and damage tolerance approaches, allowing weight savings and increasing aircraft reliability and structural integrity. The application of the damage tolerance approach requires extensive know-how of the fatigue and fracture properties, corrosion strength, potential failure modes and non-destructive inspection techniques, particularly minimum detectable defect and inspection intervals. In parallel, engineering practice involving damage tolerance requires numerical techniques for stress analysis of cracked structures. These evolved from basic mode I evaluations using rough finite element approaches, to current 3D modeling based on energetic approaches as the VCCT, or simulation of joining processes. This book provides a concise introduction to this subject.

Book Numerical Modeling of Inverse Problems for Damage Detection in Aircraft Structures

Download or read book Numerical Modeling of Inverse Problems for Damage Detection in Aircraft Structures written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a competitive approach for damage detection in aircraft structures, wherein online information is collected and compared with an existing database for the undamaged structure, to obtain real-time information about the presence of damage. The goal of this research is to develop numerical models of inverse problems for damage detection in aircraft structures, which could later be part of an on-board system for SHM. In this work, the numerical modeling has two main branches: (1) The direct problem: a model is required to obtain information on the distribution of the quantity of interest throughout a given damaged structure. The model of the direct problem, using the boundary element method (BEM), is expected to reproduce the reality of an aircraft structure. (2) The inverse problem: a model is required to locate the structural damage given the information on the quantity of interest at particular locations (sensor locations). To increase the reliability of the detection approach, a combination of independent optimization and identification procedures can be used. Some treatment of the model uncertainties is required, due to the stochasticity in the problem variables and parameters.

Book Evaluation and Verification of Advanced Methods to Assess Multiple site Damage of Aircraft Structure

Download or read book Evaluation and Verification of Advanced Methods to Assess Multiple site Damage of Aircraft Structure written by Brett L. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 1040 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study were to (1) take existing analysis tools and establish the processes required of using them as engineering tools to determine the effects of multiple-site damage (MSD) on the residual strength of representative aircraft structures and (2) investigate small crack behavior to better understand the formation of MSD in structures. These tools and criteria were used and verified in this study to analyze portions of the multiple-site crack initiation, growth, linkup, and catastrophic fracture process. For the development of MSD, the fundamental phenomenon of fatigue crack initiation in material and the rate of growth were addressed experimentally at the coupon level and analytically using FASTRAN. The initiation of MSD was addressed at the component level on flat panels that were representative of typical fuselage lap splices. Experimentally generated data and a closure-based crack growth code were used to develop equivalent initial flaw sizes. Residual strength analysis used the application of the T(asterisk)-integral, CTOA, and plastic zone linkup criteria to predict the linkup and fast fracture of MSD in curved panels and aft pressure bulkhead. A procedure was developed that used elastic-plastic finite element analyses with STAGS and CTOA to perform the stable tearing and unstable fracture of MSD in aircraft structures.

Book Analysis of Structures

Download or read book Analysis of Structures written by Joe G. Eisley and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Structures offers an original way of introducing engineering students to the subject of stress and deformation analysis of solid objects, and helps them become more familiar with how numerical methods such as the finite element method are used in industry. Eisley and Waas secure for the reader a thorough understanding of the basic numerical skills and insight into interpreting the results these methods can generate. Throughout the text, they include analytical development alongside the computational equivalent, providing the student with the understanding that is necessary to interpret and use the solutions that are obtained using software based on the finite element method. They then extend these methods to the analysis of solid and structural components that are used in modern aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering applications. Analysis of Structures is accompanied by a book companion website www.wiley.com/go/waas housing exercises and examples that use modern software which generates color contour plots of deformation and internal stress. It offers invaluable guidance and understanding to senior level and graduate students studying courses in stress and deformation analysis as part of aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering degrees as well as to practicing engineers who want to re-train or re-engineer their set of analysis tools for contemporary stress and deformation analysis of solids and structures. Provides a fresh, practical perspective to the teaching of structural analysis using numerical methods for obtaining answers to real engineering applications Proposes a new way of introducing students to the subject of stress and deformation analysis of solid objects that are used in a wide variety of contemporary engineering applications Casts axial, torsional and bending deformations of thin walled objects in a framework that is closely amenable to the methods by which modern stress analysis software operates.

Book Numerical Analysis of a GLARE Aircraft Panel

Download or read book Numerical Analysis of a GLARE Aircraft Panel written by Can Berker Özdem and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Airframes are subjected to various loads from mechanical to thermal loads during operations of aircrafts. Sections made by using GLARE are affected by this loads,in terms of their mechanical properties. Adetailed understanding of the behaviour of these laminates is necessary for further improvement of their performance and durability. With the increase in complexity of structures and material systems, the need for powerful design tools becomes evident.Numerical simulation is a very powerful tool to investigate the behaviour of materials and structures. In this thesis, the mechanical behaviour of fiber metal laminates has been characterized via numerical analysis. This work was carried out focusing on thenumerical simulation of the structures made out of GLARE, using PLCd finite element code,an FE code, developed by the RMEE (Department of Structures and Strength of Materials, UPC) and CIMNE (International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering) which allows the accurate analysis of elastic and plastic behaviour of materials under various loads. Several numerical tests have been simulated.Special attention has been placed on describing the Serial/Parallel mixing theory and its scope to deal with thenumerical simulation. An iterative learning process has been carried out in order to get the enough knowledge to deal with the simulation of the experimental testscarried out in other literaturesources. The preliminary stages have been done with aim ofgaining experience regarding the mesh sizes, parameter inputsand the differences obtained with different parametersin terms of numerical results accuracy and also computational time costs.Afterwards, simulations havebeen donein order to learn how to simulate aluminium composite laminates in the linear and non-linear range, as well as to fully understand the performance of the SPtheory. The simulations conducted and the results analysedhave allowed to obtain an excellent understanding on the mechanical performance of both aluminium and composite materials, the complexities associated with material non-linearities, and the requirements of non-linear finite element methods. This work presents all these simulations as well as the conclusions obtained from each one of them.Hence, the SP mixing theory, in addition with an appropriate constitutive equations, has showed that the approach is capable ofsimulatingloads and predict the materialnon-linear behaviourof the composite components. The concept of continuum damage mechanics is used, with a damage modelfor fiber and matrix.
