Book A Numerical Investigation of Metabolic Reductive Dechlorination in DNAPL Source Zones

Download or read book A Numerical Investigation of Metabolic Reductive Dechlorination in DNAPL Source Zones written by John Anthony Christ and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most intractable environmental remediation problems are those involving the release of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), such as chlorinated solvents, to the subsurface. Research efforts have focused on the use of numerical models to investigate reductions in contaminant concentrations due to partial mass removal and improvements in the performance of complementary source zone remediation technologies. Previous numerical investigations, however, have been limited to two-dimensional systems. Furthermore, a lack of models capable of simulating the most promising complementary technology, metabolic reductive dechlorination, has limited its application. This work developed and applied compositional multiphase numerical simulators to examine the influence of dimensionality (two-dimensions versus three-dimensions) on DNAPL source zone simulations and to investigate the benefits of stimulating metabolic reductive dechlorination at a chlorinated ethene-DNAPL contaminated site. Results from the dimensionality investigation showed that the simulation of DNAPL migration, entrapment, and dissolution in two dimensions provided reasonable approximations to the behavior simulated in three dimensions. Commonly employed saturation distribution and mass recovery metrics were approximately equivalent. Flux- averaged concentrations simulated in two dimensions, however, tended to be three to four times higher than those simulated in three dimensions. This difference was attributed to dilution at the down gradient boundary. An alternative metric, mass flux reduction, however, yielded better agreement.

Book Numerical Investigation of Aerodynamics of Canard controlled Missile Using Planar and Grid Tail Fins

Download or read book Numerical Investigation of Aerodynamics of Canard controlled Missile Using Planar and Grid Tail Fins written by James DeSpirito and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viscous computational fluid dynamic simulations were used to predict the aerodynamic coefficients and flow field around a canard-controlled missile in subsonic and transonic flow. Computations were performed at Mach 0.6 and 0.9, six angles of attack between 0 deg and 10 deg, and with planar and grid tail fins. The computations were validated with wind tunnel data. Flow visualizations showed that the canard downwash produced a low-pressure region on the starboard side of the missile that produced a large induced side force. The canard trailing vortices interacted with the tail fins until alpha> 8 deg, producing a pressure differential on the leeward tail fin, leading to the adverse induced roll effects. Visualizations of the flow through the grid fin structure showed choking of the flow at Mach 0.9 and Mach 1.5. The validated simulations results showed that grid fins did not improve the canard roll-control effectiveness at subsonic and transonic speeds as well as they did at the low supersonic speed.

Book Buckling And Postbuckling Structures Experimental Analytical And Numerical Studies

Download or read book Buckling And Postbuckling Structures Experimental Analytical And Numerical Studies written by Brian G Falzon and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008-05-23 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth treatment of the study of the stability of engineering structures. Contributions from internationally recognized leaders in the field ensure a wide coverage of engineering disciplines in which structural stability is of importance, in particular the analytical and numerical modelling of structural stability applied to aeronautical, civil, marine and offshore structures. The results from a number of comprehensive experimental test programs are also presented, thus enhancing our understanding of stability phenomena as well as validating the analytical and computational solution schemes presented. A variety of structural materials are investigated with special emphasis on carbon-fibre composites, which are being increasingly utilized in weight-critical structures. Instabilities at the meso- and micro-scales are also discussed. This book will be particularly relevant to professional engineers, graduate students and researchers interested in structural stability./a

Book Numerical and experimental investigations of distribution of gaseous emissions with the air flow in the indoor environment

Download or read book Numerical and experimental investigations of distribution of gaseous emissions with the air flow in the indoor environment written by Umer Afzal and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2017 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many sources of emissions produced by burning fuel for power or heat, through chemical reactions, and from leaks from industrial processes or equipment. There is always a possibility of a potential hazard when these gases enter into the indoor environment with the air flow. The determination of the concentration profiles are necessary to evaluate the potential hazard posed by the gas spread. The main objectives of this work are to develop an appropriate measurement methodology and a 3D CFD transient multicomponent simulation model for the determination of spatial and temporal distribution of gaseous emissions with the air flow in the indoor environment. This work is also aimed at comparing the numerical simulation results of different CFD programs for a 2D base case model of indoor air flow with and without emission source under laminar and turbulent flow conditions for the purpose of developing a better basic understanding of the physical phenomena and for the selection of the suitable and appropriate CFD program for the further development of the simulation model. One of the goals is also to apply the developed simulation model to the loss prevention and risk mitigation in the indoor environment and to study the influence of different parameters on the concentration distribution of gaseous pollutants in the presence of air flow in the indoor environment to minimize the expensive and time consuming experimentation efforts.

Book Numerical Studies on a Global Barotropic Vorticity Equation Model of the Atmosphere

Download or read book Numerical Studies on a Global Barotropic Vorticity Equation Model of the Atmosphere written by Samuel Y. K. Yee and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical experiments have been designed to study the suitability of certain numerical methods commonly used in the numerical modeling of the atmosphere. Specifically, we conducted experiments to address the following: (1) What effect does a Shapiro-type filter have on the results of a numerical time-integration? (2) What are the capabilities and limitations of numerical approximations such as second-order finite-difference approximations in numerical time-integrations? The Shapiro filter is found to be very effective in the removal of computation noise and is therefore useful for insuring computational stability in a long-term time-integration. For dynamically stable flows, numerical errors due to truncation and round-off are amplified by the dynamics of the stable system. Numerical methods such as second order finite-difference approximations, together with a Shapiro-type filter, are adequate in yielding approximate solutions to the modeling differential equations. For dynamically unstable flows, numerical errors are amplified as part of the dynamics of the unstable system. The use of finite-difference approximations may yield solutions which bear no resemblance whatsoever to the true solution of the differential equations. It is postulated that interactions among long wave computational modes and physical modes in a numerical model may prove to be another major obstacle in the numerical prediction of an unstable flow. Book Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Engine Processes

Download or read book Proceedings of the 2nd Conference on Engine Processes written by Sens, Marc and published by Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the combustion engine looks set to remain the dominant energy conversion unit in vehicle powertrains in the medium term, either in combination with electrical components or on its own, attention will need to be paid to continue improving its efficiency in the future. The high development depth of today's combustion engines means that it is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve significant efficiency improvements by simple means. On the search for these improvements, the focus has shifted to inner-engine processes, for instance charge cycles including the charging system, the mixture formation including injection, combustion and kinematic conversion of the energy within the fuel. Our 2nd conference 'Engine processes' aims to offer all developers a platform to discuss the latest technological developments in the field of inner-engine process control, and encourage new paths to be taken. We believe that the program for this conference is a sound foundation for this endeavour.
