Through supercharging, the inlet air density is increased, usually by means of a compressor, and by doing so the amount of air trapped in the cylinders is increased accordingly. As a result, efficient burning of a proportionately higher amount of fuel is enabled. By far, the most successful version of supercharging is turbocharging. Here, the expansion in a turbine of the exhaust gases leaving the cylinders supplies the power needed to drive the compressor. At the moment, practically all diesel engines are turbocharged, with a continuously increasing penetration in the highly competitive market of SI-powered vehicles. The current book on turbochargers and turbocharging, comprising fifteen chapters, gathers important and novel research on many modern aspects of turbocharging for all kinds of gasoline and diesel-powered engine applications (automotive, truck, marine and aircraft). For example, characterisation of the value proposition of turbocharged vehicles, marine engines turbo-compounding, fundamental issues of turbocharger lag and its relation with engine-out PM emissions, variable geometric compressors, automotive two-stage turbocharging, and dynamic operation of turbochargers including VGT and surging effects are amongst the topics analysed. Book excerpt: In view of the importance to contemporary turbocompressor design of increasing the efficiency of low-capacity, high-pressure, centrifugal compressors, and the difficulties engendered by the small discharge volumes, the paper summarizes and evaluates the results obtained in tests of such compressor stages. Tests were carried out on 9 configurations of intermediate stages (impeller-diffuser-return bend and channel) and 3 configurations of terminal stages (impeller-diffuser). All the impellers had a relative width b2/D2 of approximately 0.02; the intermediate stage impellers had a diameter D2 of 352 mm and were tested at tip speeds of 300-315 m/sec., while the terminal stage impellers were 220-256 mm in diameter and were tested at 196-229 m/sec. Three types of diffusers (channeled, vaned and vaneless) were used for the intermediate stages, while the terminal stages were tested only with vaned diffusers. The effectiveness of a particular stage was evaluated on the basis of the stage efficiency, impeller efficiency, diffuser efficiency, stage pressure coefficient, stage pressure ratio, impeller pressure ratio, drag coefficient of the stationary parts, relative loss coefficient of the stagnation pressure, degree of reaction, Mach number, Reynolds number, flow coefficient, discharge rate and the angles of incidence of flow. Book excerpt: Curvature effects are investigated in terms of a recently developed curvature corrected turbulence model in turbomachinery applications. Two centrifugal compressor stages and a curved geometry modelled after a centrifugal impeller are simulated using the curvature corrected SST (SST-CC) turbulence model. This work improves the understanding of how the SST-CC model predicts curvature effects. An analysis of the SST-CC production multiplier in both centrifugal cases reveals that the model is appropriately accounting for curvature effects, showing increased production near concave surfaces and decreased production near convex surfaces. This correlates well with the simplified geometry results and demonstrates that the simplified geometry is successfully capturing the curvature effects of the centrifugal stages. A detailed investigation of turbulence quantities in the simplified geometry further demonstrated how curvature effects are predicted by the SST-CC model. Future work will include experimentation on the 1C stage and further comparison with numerical results.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents an investigation of the effects of Ported Shroud (PS) self-recirculating casing treatment used in turbocharger centrifugal compressors for increasing the operable range. Computed results, assessed with experimental measurements on ported and non-ported variants of a representative turbocharger compressor, are used to determine the impact of the PS on the flow field and hence performance. It is shown that the main flow path perceives the PS flow as a combination of flow actuations that include injection and removal of mass flow, and injection of axial momentum and tangential momentum. A computational model in which the presence of the PS is replaced by imposed boundary conditions that reflect the individual flow actuations has thus been formulated and implemented. The removal of a fraction of the inducer mass flow was determined to be the dominant flow actuation in setting the performance of PS compressors. Mass flow removal reduces the flow blockage associated with the impeller tip leakage flow and increases the diffusion in the main flow path. Adding swirl to the injected flow in the direction opposite of the wheel rotation results in an increase of the stagnation pressure ratio and a decrease of the efficiency. The loss generation in the flow path has been defined to rationalize efficiency changes associated with PS operation.
