Book Breaking wave load of a vertical slender cylinder within a cylinder group

Download or read book Breaking wave load of a vertical slender cylinder within a cylinder group written by Jeanette Juilfs and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2006-10-02 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2006 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Braunschweig (Leichtweiss-Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources, Department of Coastal Engineering), language: English, abstract: Slender cylinders are widely used as a structural element in offshore structures. Oil platforms, jetties and piers are often supported by group of cylinders, which are arranged closely spaced. The Morison equation (Morison et al., 1950) constitutes a simple tool to calculate the wave force on one single cylinder. To what extent the cylinders, which are arranged in a group, affect each other is extensively unclear. As these group interference effects are not considered in the Morison equation there is a lack of a generally accepted formula to calculate the individual forces on cylinders within cylinder groups. In this student research project the special loading case of breaking waves acting on cylinder groups is examined. Breaking waves developed from wave superposition during a storm may cause great impact loads also in deep water. The investigation of breaking waves leads to the upper bound of possible loads on offshore structures. A closer analysis of the so called impact force and the validation of former assumptions of considering it is not part of this paper. The main focus lies on the interactions between cylinders arranged in groups when a single breaking wave impinges the group or a part of it. These interactions are investigated based on large-scale experiments, which have been performed in summer 2004 in the Large Wave Flume (GWK) at the Coastal Research Centre (FZK) in Hanover. Fifteen configurations of cylinder groups have been examined, including one configuration with one single cylinder and fourteen configurations of groups up to three cylinders arranged in row or transversely. The single cylinder and one cylinder in each cylinder group are equipped with strain gauges on the top, which measure the bending moments during the tests. These measuring cylinders, in the single arrangement and in the group arrangements, have the same position in the wave flume. Therefore the comparison of the measured bending moments of the single cylinder with those of the cylinder in the group provides information about the influence of the adjacent elements in a cylinder group. The results of the single cylinder test can be taken as a reference for the results of the cylinder group’s tests.

Book Numerical Investigation of Solitary Wave Interaction with Group of Cylinders

Download or read book Numerical Investigation of Solitary Wave Interaction with Group of Cylinders written by Weihua Mo and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical model is developed to solve the three dimensional wavestructure interaction problem. This model is based on the filtered Navier-Stokes equations or Eulers equation for incompressible flow. A two-step projection finite volume scheme is adopted to solve the N-S equations and the free surface movement is tracked by the piecewise linear volume of fluid (VOF) method. The large eddy sub-grid model is used for the turbulence calculation. In the large eddy simulation (LES), the small scale eddies are modeled by the sub-grid scale model, and the large eddies are explicitly solved. Traditional Smagorinsky LES model and RNG LES model are implemented in this study. The numerical model has been validated by using non-breaking waves. Non-breaking solitary wave or periodic Stokes wave propagating in a constant water depth are numerically simulated. The numerical solutions are compared with the analytical theory or laboratory measurements. The conservative property of the numerical model is also inspected. In general, the numerical model gives satisfactory results for the wave kinematics, such as the free surface displacement, phase speed and fluid velocity. The numerical model is then used to simulate solitary waves and their interaction with a group of slender vertical piles in a constant water depth. The Eulers equation is numerically solved since the waves are non-breaking. The numerical results are compared with laboratory data in terms of free surface displacements, fluid particle velocity and wave forces. The relatively less satisfactory agreement is observed in the dynamic pressure on the cylinder, but this could be due to the measurement errors. The complex three-dimensional flow patterns, the velocity and pressure fields are presented and discussed. Later, the breaking solitary waves on a slanted beach and their interaction with a slender cylinder are studied. The large eddy simulation (LES) is used for the turbulence calculation. The numerical results show reasonably good agreements with the laboratory data. Discussion about the choice of LES subgrid model is also presented.

Book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures

Download or read book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures written by Jorgen Fredsoe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-03-17 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.
