Download or read book Number Sense Routines written by Jessica Shumway and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking and highly practical book,Number Sense Routines: Building Numerical Literacy Every Day in Grades K-3, author Jessica Shumway proposes that all children have innate number sense which can be developed through daily exercise. Shumway createda series of math routines designed to help young students strengthen and build their facility with numbers. These quick 5, 10, or 15 minute exercises are easy to implement as an add-on to any elementary math curriculum. Understanding Number Sense: Students with strong number sense understand numbers, how to subitize, relationships among numbers, and number systems. They make reasonable estimates, compute fluently, use reasoning strategies, and use visual models to solve problems. Number Sense Routines supports the early learner by instilling the importance of daily warm-ups and explains how they benefit developing math minds for long-term learning. Real Classroom Examples: Shumway compiled her classroom observations from around the country. She includes conversations among students who practice number sense routines to illustrate them in action, how children's number sense develops with daily use, and math strategies students learn as they develop their numerical literacy through self-paced practice. Assessment Strategies: Number Sense Routines demonstrates the importance of listening to your students and knowing what to look for. Teachers will gain a deeper understanding of the underlying math skills and strategies students learn as they develop numerical literacy. Shumway writes, As you read, you will step into various classrooms and listen in on students' conversations, which I hope will give you insight into the power of number sense routines and the impact they have on students' number sense development. My hope is that going into the classroom, into students' conversations, and into their thought processes, you will come away with new ideas and tools to use in your own classroom.

Book Early Childhood Mathematics Education Research

Download or read book Early Childhood Mathematics Education Research written by Julie Sarama and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new book synthesizes relevant research on the learning of mathematics from birth into the primary grades from the full range of these complementary perspectives. At the core of early math experts Julie Sarama and Douglas Clements's theoretical and empirical frameworks are learning trajectories—detailed descriptions of children’s thinking as they learn to achieve specific goals in a mathematical domain, alongside a related set of instructional tasks designed to engender those mental processes and move children through a developmental progression of levels of thinking. Rooted in basic issues of thinking, learning, and teaching, this groundbreaking body of research illuminates foundational topics on the learning of mathematics with practical and theoretical implications for all ages. Those implications are especially important in addressing equity concerns, as understanding the level of thinking of the class and the individuals within it, is key in serving the needs of all children.

Book It All Fits Together

  • Author : Carolyn (Lynn) T. Kuske
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 138 pages

Download or read book It All Fits Together written by Carolyn (Lynn) T. Kuske and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this study is to improve the teaching of number sense to first-grade students. Mathematics activities in elementary school currently employ number patterns that are incompatible with the current research on brain-based learning and children's learning styles. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to explore whether a new set of number patterns can benefit students in developing good number sense. The author developed a logical and consistent set of number patterns that work like a puzzle. The study integrates these new patterns called Number Puzzle Patterns into an existing first-grade mathematics curriculum to find if the use of these patterns facilitates students' development of number sense. The students in the study are from a multicultural, socially and economically diverse public school, in which 48% of the students are ESL and 54% qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch. Data collection strategies include assessment interviews with each students, review of student work, and an interview with the teacher. The results show that after a year of exposure to Number Puzzle Patterns, students exhibit a higher level of understanding than the teacher and researcher expect in these students regarding the part-part-whole relationships of numbers and place value concepts. The data also show that students use Number Puzzle Patterns as figural representations of numbers that they are able to recognize the numerosity of patterned arrangements of objects without counting. Finally, the study demonstrates that the consistency that Number Puzzle Patterns provides to the curriculum facilitates students' internalization and retention of their learning.

Book Mindset Mathematics

  • Author : Jo Boaler
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2017-08-28
  • ISBN : 1119358809
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Mindset Mathematics written by Jo Boaler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engage students in mathematics using growth mindset techniques The most challenging parts of teaching mathematics are engaging students and helping them understand the connections between mathematics concepts. In this volume, you'll find a collection of low floor, high ceiling tasks that will help you do just that, by looking at the big ideas at the first-grade level through visualization, play, and investigation. During their work with tens of thousands of teachers, authors Jo Boaler, Jen Munson, and Cathy Williams heard the same message—that they want to incorporate more brain science into their math instruction, but they need guidance in the techniques that work best to get across the concepts they needed to teach. So the authors designed Mindset Mathematics around the principle of active student engagement, with tasks that reflect the latest brain science on learning. Open, creative, and visual math tasks have been shown to improve student test scores, and more importantly change their relationship with mathematics and start believing in their own potential. The tasks in Mindset Mathematics reflect the lessons from brain science that: There is no such thing as a math person - anyone can learn mathematics to high levels. Mistakes, struggle and challenge are the most important times for brain growth. Speed is unimportant in mathematics. Mathematics is a visual and beautiful subject, and our brains want to think visually about mathematics. With engaging questions, open-ended tasks, and four-color visuals that will help kids get excited about mathematics, Mindset Mathematics is organized around nine big ideas which emphasize the connections within the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and can be used with any current curriculum.
