Book The Rooster

Download or read book The Rooster written by Sibel Roller and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a father, as seen through the prism of a daughter’s memories of him. The personal story is offset against a greater political context and the destructive impact of nationalism on individuals and their families. It is a tale of survival, resilience and humanity. The book covers the time that the father, Dragan, spent in a World War II concentration camp set up by the separatist Independent State of Croatia, a Nazi-supported puppet state run by Croatian ultra-nationalists. The camp and the atrocities perpetrated there are still highly contentious issues in contemporary Croatia, Serbia and especially in Bosnia and Hercegovina. The absence of reconciliation over the events in the camp was one of the contributing factors in the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the subsequent Balkan wars and the continued instability of the region today. The memoir contains the manuscript left by Dragan, in conversation with his daughter Sibel, the author. It is indeed, a deeply personal learning experience about a part of her father that she never knew.

Book Into India Out of Africa

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alistair Caldicott
  • Publisher : Lulu.com
  • Release : 2004-12-01
  • ISBN : 1413741088
  • Pages : 283 pages

Download or read book Into India Out of Africa written by Alistair Caldicott and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the word go, the style and tenor of this book is set. And it doesn't take long before we realise we are in for a raunchy, realistic, roughish ride; so seat yourself comfortably. Be transported from the relentlessly chaotic assault on the senses that is India to the cool Himalayan magnificence of trekking to Everest Base Camp. Through the vastness of Australia, unable to escape the predictably painful experiences of England's cricket team, before plunging into the outdoor activity challenges of New Zealand. Then, perhaps most compelling of all, the continent of Africa from the bottom up. An ambitious journey overland encompassing Africa's most extreme tip right up to its snow-covered top, Mt Kilimanjaro. Here it is not so much the final destination as all that is entailed to get there that informs and entertains. With a refreshing attitude, this book doesn't try to be the great African travel book drowning you with its intensity; Bruce Chatwin it is not. But it is a breath of fairly fresh air (excluding a lot of dust and some graphically described indigenous odours). The tone is conversational and intimate; the author takes the reader along with him on his (slightly) bumpy travels, and there is a splendid lack of any sort of political correctness, although Alistair is actually broad-minded and unprejudiced (minus a few Australians). He understands the people he meets. Without wanting to be remotely serious-because he isn't-this is a book that is kind and understanding of different places and people. The author observes, records, and attempts to shed light on people, places and experiences that are not of the everyday variety. The traveller-both experienced and of the armchairvariety-could have many a worse companion than this book.

Download or read book Accidental Pharisees written by Larry Osborne and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zealous faith can have a dangerous, dark side. While recent calls for radical Christians have challenged many to be more passionate about their faith, the down side can be a budding arrogance and self-righteousness that “accidentally” sneaks into our outlook. In Accidental Pharisees, bestselling author Larry Osborne diagnoses nine of the most common traps that can ensnare Christians on the road to a deeper life of faith. Rejecting attempts to turn the call to follow Christ into a new form of legalism, he shows readers how to avoid the temptations of pride, exclusivity, legalism, and hypocrisy, Larry reminds us that attempts to fan the flames of full-on discipleship and call people to Christlikeness should be rooted in love and humility. Christians stirred by calls to radical discipleship, but unsure how to respond, will be challenged and encouraged to develop a truly Christlike zeal for God.

Book Arachne s Daughter

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dannii Lane
  • Publisher : Strategic Book Publishing
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 1609761804
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Arachne s Daughter written by Dannii Lane and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arachne's Daughter: A tale of murder, mayhem and madness is a modern day Greek tragedy, with multiple threads weaving a strange, yet familiar pattern. In this spellbinding story, a beautiful young witch named Antigone finds herself constantly vilified by religious bigotry, superstition and ignorance that feed off 17th-century witch paranoia. One day a mysterious parcel arrives. It is a powerful and magical gift from the past, one that keeps cropping up at unexpected moments with strange outcomes. Antigone's story is one of being discriminated against, and of being sexually abused and tortured, but the day comes when Antigone the victim becomes Antigone the ruthless assassin. In her deadly wake, she leaves communities cringing, the authorities baffled, and the mental health system in chaos. Amid the murder, mayhem and madness, Antigone must also battle her own demons of mental illness and a deeply scarred childhood. From Mount Olympus in ancient Greece to Mount Wellington in 20th-century Tasmania, and places in-between, Arachne's Daughter is a journey fraught with madness, danger, death and sacrifice. About the Author: Dannii Lane was one of thirty-five alternate personalities (alters) in a multiple personality system (MPD). Dannii was also a witch. Inspiration for the book came from a love of Greek history and myths, and a background of child abuse and mental illness. When not writing, Dannii worked tirelessly advocating for mental health reform. Sadly, due to spontaneous integration, Dannii did not survive to see her novel published.
