Book Null Pronouns

Download or read book Null Pronouns written by Melani Wratil and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most natural languages display an inventory of pronominal elements that obligatorily or optionally remain phonologically null in a few, in many or even in all syntactic surroundings. The authors of the papers compiled in this book analyse such null pronouns in a synchronic and diachronic way and recover the specific morphological and syntactic prerequisites for their origin and insertion.

Book Pronouns in Embedded Contexts at the Syntax Semantics Interface

Download or read book Pronouns in Embedded Contexts at the Syntax Semantics Interface written by Pritty Patel-Grosz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents studies on pronouns in embedded contexts, and offers fundamental insights into this central area of research. Much of the recent research on pronouns has shown that embedded environments, such as clausal complements of attitude predicates, provide a window into the nature of pronouns. Pronouns in such environments not only exhibit familiar distinctions such as that between bound and referential pronouns; if they refer to the attitude holder, they also participate in a broader range of phenomena, e.g., distinguishing between a de se reading (involving a conscious self-directed belief) and a de re reading (involving an accidental belief about oneself). Topics covered include: the semantics of attitude reports that contain pronominal elements, the semantics of pronominal features and their connection to indexicality, new insights in the connection of pronominal typology and logophoricity or anti-logophoricity, and finally, the localization of embedded pronouns within a bigger picture involving the nature of perspective and the analysis of quasi-pronominal phenomena such as sequence of tense.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Pronouns

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Pronouns written by Laura L. Paterson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-07 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original volume provides the first state-of-the-art overview of research on pronouns in the 21st century. Book Subject Pronoun Expression in Spanish

Download or read book Subject Pronoun Expression in Spanish written by Ana M. Carvalho and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much recent scholarship has sought to identify the linguistic and social factors that favor the expression or omission of subject pronouns in Spanish. This volume brings together leading experts on the topic of language variation in Spanish to provide a panoramic view of research trends, develop probabilistic models of grammar, and investigate the impact of language contact on pronoun expression. The book consists of three sections. The first studies the distributional patterns and conditioning forces on subject pronoun expression in four monolingual varieties—Dominican, Colombian, Mexican, and Peninsular—and makes cross-dialectal comparisons. In the second section, experts explore Spanish in contact with English, Maya, Catalan, and Portuguese to determine the extent to which each language influences this syntactic variable. The final section examines the acquisition of variable subject pronoun expression among monolingual and bilingual children as well as adult second language learners.

Book Theoretical and Experimental Aspects of Syntax Discourse Interface in Heritage Grammars

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Aspects of Syntax Discourse Interface in Heritage Grammars written by Tania Ivanova-Sullivan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Theoretical and Experimental Aspects of Syntax-Discourse Interface in Heritage Grammars, Tanya Ivanova-Sullivan investigates comprehension and production of anaphoric dependencies with null and overt subject pronouns. She discusses the divergent behaviour of the heritage speakers of Russian by providing a closer look at their proficiency level, quantity of input and order of language acquisition. She explains the results with various degrees of successful application of pragmatic principles and efficiency in allocating cognitive resources. The contribution of the monograph lies in the discussion of theoretical and experimental issues related to anaphora resolution along with an investigation of all aspects of representation and processing of anaphoric pronouns by various kinds of bilinguals: heritage speakers, L2 learners and L1 attriters.

Book Studies in Chinese and Japanese Language Acquisition

Download or read book Studies in Chinese and Japanese Language Acquisition written by Mineharu Nakayama and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on important methodological and theoretical issues in Chinese and Japanese L1 and L2 acquisition. All contributions discuss experiments using the Truth Value Judgment Task (TVJT), on three syntactic and semantic domains, binding, scope interaction, and wh- and logical expressions. The issues in these grammatical domains are particularly well suited for TVJT studies as the task allows for the testing of particular interpretations among alternative representations and reveals children’s and adults’ understandings of these constructions. The book is a tribute to Stephen Crain’s contribution to the field of Chinese and Japanese language acquisition within the framework of Generative Grammar. It is a state-of-the-art collection that offers a picture of cutting-edge research on children’s and adult’s Chinese and Japanese acquisition. Readers will find the book a rich source of ideas and the starting point of new projects.

Book Expletive and Referential Subject Pronouns in Medieval French

Download or read book Expletive and Referential Subject Pronouns in Medieval French written by Michael Zimmermann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval French, usually analyzed as a null subject language, differs considerably from modern Romance null subject languages such as Spanish in the availability of non-expressed subject pronouns; specifically, it shows characteristics reminiscent of non-null, rather than null subject languages, such as the expression of expletive subject pronouns. The central goal of this book is to put forward an account of these differences. On the basis of the analysis of an extensive, newly established data corpus, the development of the expression of both expletive and referential subject pronouns until the 17th c. is determined. Following a thorough discussion of previous approaches, an alternative approach is presented which builds on the analysis of Medieval French as a non-null subject language. The non-expression of subject pronouns, licit in specific contexts in non-null subject languages, is shown to be restricted to configurations generally involving left-peripheral focalization. These configurations – and, concomitantly, non-expressed subject pronouns – are finally argued to be eventually lost for good in the wake of the initial observation by 17th c. writers of pertinent instructions campaigned for in highly influential works of language use.

Book Heritage Languages and their Speakers

Download or read book Heritage Languages and their Speakers written by Maria Polinsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a pioneering introduction to heritage languages and their speakers, written by one of the founders of this new field. Using examples from a wide range of languages, it covers all the main components of grammar, including phonetics and phonology, morphology and morphosyntax, semantics and pragmatics, and shows easy familiarity with approaches ranging from formal grammar to typology, from sociolinguistics to child language acquisition and other relevant aspects of psycholinguistics. The book offers analysis of resilient and vulnerable domains in heritage languages, with a special emphasis on recurrent structural properties that occur across multiple heritage languages. It is explicit about instances where, based on our current knowledge, we are unable to reach a clear decision on a particular claim or analytical point, and therefore provides a much-needed resource for future research.

Book The Acquisition of Anaphora in Child Mandarin

Download or read book The Acquisition of Anaphora in Child Mandarin written by Ruya Li and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Acquisition of Anaphora in Child Mandarin explores how Mandarin-speaking children’s interpretation of the reflexive ziji and their use of null arguments can be understood under the notions of locality and prominence. This book investigates the interpretation of ziji and the use of null subjects and null objects by experimenting on Mandarin-speaking children and adults using a range of experimental techniques such as the truth value judgment task, the picture identification task, and the story-telling task. The book provides evidence to show that reflexive binding and argument dropping are determined by the interplay between universal principles and language-specific properties. It shows that children at the age of 4 make an adult-like distinction between the anaphoric and logophoric interpretations of ziji. The former is subject to the locality condition manifested by the blocking effect on the long-distance binding of ziji, whereas the latter is free from the locality condition and closely related to the understanding of the false beliefs of others. This book is an important contribution to language acquisition research and can serve as a valuable reference for graduate students and researchers in the field of language acquisition, Chinese linguistics, psycholinguistics, and cognitive science.
