Book excerpt: In an attempt to determine the mechanism of recrystallisation in zinc, the modes of deformation, which occur at high temperatures when a bicrystal of zinc is sheared along its grain boundary, are being investigated. Towards this end, apparatus for growing bicrystals has been designed and built. Single crystals of zinc, for use as seed crystals, have been grown. Work is progressing towards a method of casting very pure zinc in a bicrystal mould and for seeding the polycrystalline casting for the growth of bicrystals of closely controlled orientation. Techniques for optical, electron microscopical and X-ray diffraction examination of the structure of the bicrystal are currently being developed. (Author).

Book excerpt: We report the recent work on twinning and detwinning in fcc and hcp metals based on the in situ and ex situ TEM observations and molecular dynamics simulations. Three aspects are discussed in this paper. (1) Detwinning in single-phase Cu with respect to growth twins, (2) deformation twinning in Ag-Cu composites, and (3) deformation twinning mechanisms in hcp metals. The main conclusion is that atomic structures of interfaces (twin boundaries, two-phases interface, and grain boundaries) play a crucial role in nucleating and propagating of deformation twins.

Book excerpt: A constitutive relation is developed to describe the grain size, temperature and strain rate dependence of the stress required for the essentially elastic twinning of body centered cubic (bcc) metals at low temperatures. The relation is derived from a description of the bulk material strain produced by twinning and, also, from specifying on the basis of a thermal activation analysis the number of twins and the twinning nucleation rate. Two natural consequences of this development for bcc metals are that twins must be nucleated by pre-twinning slip and that twinning and brittle fracture are predicted to occur under very similar circumstances. These are normal experimental observations. (Author).
