Book excerpt: The Clark University research program in nuclear structure is a collaborative effort involving Clark University personnel, staff members from Brookhaven National Laboratory and an active participation of scientists from the US and other nations. The TRISTAN on-line isotope separator and the capture [gamma]-ray facility at the High Flux Beam Reactor are the primary experimental foci of the program which has four principal research themes, three involving nuclear structure physics and one directed towards astrophysics. These themes are: (1) the manifestation of the proton-neutron interaction in the evolution of nuclear structure and its relation to collectivity, (2) the appearance and the role of symmetries and supersymmetries in nuclei, (3) the study of new regions of magic nuclei, and (4) the characterization of nuclei important in r-process stellar nucleosynthesis.

Prior to August 5, 1988, this project was called the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the progress made during the period May 1, 1993 through June 30, 1994 on Grant No. DE-FG05-92ER40694. Our calculations of M1 transition rates within rotational bands of superdeformed nuclei have been extended to 2-quasiparticle states (mainly for odd-odd nuclei) in the A [approx] 190 region. Several bands are predicted with large B(MI) values and suggest that the MI properties can give information on details of occupied single particle orbitals, alignment of some high-N particles and the residual two-body interactions at extreme deformation. Detailed calculations and comparison with UNISOR data for the low energy, low spin structure of [sup 187]Au have revealed two coexisting prolate structures built on the [pi][h[sub 9/2] + f[sub 7/2]] configuration. This result was completely unexpected and presents strong challenges to our understanding of shape coexistence.

The study of rotational structure at moderate spins in odd-odd nuclei (Section 1) has continued into the A [approximately] 80 region. Recent experimental data for the positive parity band in [sup 82]Y, including absolute BM1 and BE2 values, are rather well described with a prolatish'' triaxial shape and a [pi]g[sub 9/2] [direct product] [nu]g[sub 9/2] configuration. Little effect from a protonneutron interaction has been found so far. Current studies of odd mass nuclei (Section 2) are mainly focussing on low spin, low energy states in the A [approximately] 130 region as a probe to the evolving collectivity. These projects involve direct collaboration with experimental colleagues. Finally, a view of the microscopic foundation of particle-core coupling models approached from the equation of motion method is presented (Section 3).

Book excerpt: Comparison has been made between the empirical integrated strengths and external R-functions and the predictions of a dispersive optical model for the n-2°8Pb system, for partial waves through f--2. Parameters of a constant geometry model give a fair representation of the experimental results. A hint of the need for a parity dependence in one of the model parameters is seen in the two data and in thetotal cross section in the low-energy region. Other research performed consisted of: (1) refinement of the resonance analysis of the n-2°8Pb system, resulting in more definitive J{sup {pi}} assignments and external R-functions consistent over the neutron energy range [80--1760 keV]; (2) background correction and processing of n-88Sr differential scattering cross section data for use with total cross section data for R-matrix analysis (3) measurement of the n-9°Zr differential scattering cross section at the 200-m flight path of the ORELA.
