Book Shape Transitions at High Spin

Download or read book Shape Transitions at High Spin written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes of nuclear shapes at high spin have been observed in several transitional nuclei, including 153 154Dy and 186Hg. In the Dy isotopes a transition from collective to single-particle character appears at high spin suggesting a change from prolate to oblate shapes. In 186Hg, decoupled i132 quasiparticle bands with prolate and oblate shapes may have been observed in two crossing bands. The present discussion focusses on the polarizing effect of high-j rotation-aligned particles on the soft cores of these nuclei. Studies of the decay of the compound nucleus 156Er, produced at the rather low excitation energy of 46 MeV in the reaction 64Ni + 92Zr, are also reported. Measurements of neutron spectra as a function of .gamma.-sum energy and of the neutron multiplicity distribution have been performed. Comparison with the results of statistical model calculations suggests a suppression of neutron emission and it is speculated that this might be due to trapping in a superdeformed well.

New experimental results and theoretical developments in nuclear physics will certainly make important contributions to our knowledge and understanding of Nature's fundamental building blocks. The interest aroused by the Conference among the scientific community was clearly reflected in the large number of participants. These represented the most important nuclear physics laboratories in the world. The Conference covered five major topics of modern nuclear physics: nuclear structure, nucleusOConucleus collisions, hadron dynamics, nuclear astrophysics, and transdisciplinary and peaceful applications of nuclear science. It reviewed recent progress in the field and provided a forum for the discussion of current and future research projects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last several decades, the study of nuclear shapes has been of prime importance. A large number of investigations, both theoretical and experimental, have led to the discovery of a rich variety of nuclear shapes like, the basic spherical, deformed, superdeformed, triaxial, shape coexistence, reflection asymmetric (pear-shape) and other exotic ones. Apart from common nuclear structural properties, each of the mentioned shapes manifests properties associated with its specific form. It is interesting to note that most deformed nuclei are prolate deformed. In this monograph, attention is paid to pear-shaped nuclei.

Book Symmetries in Nuclear Structure

Download or read book Symmetries in Nuclear Structure written by Andrea Vitturi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-04-15 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Highly Specialized Seminar on "Symmetries in Nuclear Structure", held in Erice, Italy, in March 2003, celebrated the career and the remarkable achievements of Francesco Iachello, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Since the development of the interacting boson model in the early 1970s, the ideas of Iachello have provided a variety of frameworks for understanding collective behaviour in nuclear structure, founded on the concepts of dynamical symmetries and spectrum-generating algebras. The original ideas, which were developed for the description of atomic nuclei, have now been successfully extended to cover spectroscopic behaviour in other fields, such as molecular or hadronic spectra. More recently, the suggestion by Iachello of critical point symmetries to treat nuclei in shape/phase transitional regions has opened an exciting new front for both theoreticians and experimentalists. The talks presented at the meeting covered many of the most active forefront areas of nuclear structure as well as other fields where ideas of symmetries are being explored. Topics in nuclear structure included extensive discussions on dynamical symmetries, critical point symmetries, phase transitions, statistical properties of nuclei, supersymmetry, mixed symmetry states, shears bands, pairing and clustering in nuclei, shape coexistence, exotic nuclei, dipole modes, and astrophysics, among others. In addition, important sessions focused on talks by European laboratory directors (or their representatives) outlining prospects for nuclear structure, and the application of symmetry ideas to molecular phenomena. Finally, a special lecture by Nobel laureate Alex Mueller, on s and d wave symmetry in superconductors, presented a unique insight into an allied field. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:* Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP / ISI Proceedings)* Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)* CC Proceedings -- Engineering & Physical Sciences

Book Exotic Nuclear Spectroscopy

Download or read book Exotic Nuclear Spectroscopy written by William C. McHarris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several hundred nuclear scientists from more than a dozen countries met in Miami Beach, Florida, in September 1989 for a Symposium on Exotic Nuclear Spectroscopy, sponsored by the Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology of the Amencan Chemical Society. Braving five days of beckoning beaches, they presented, listened to, and discussed a series spectroscopy-both experimental and of invited papers covering the renaissance of nuclear theoretical-that has occurred during the past decade and which promises to continue well into the decade to come. This book contains the Proceedings of that Symposium on Exotic Nuclear Spectroscopy. But it is much more: During the ensuing six months, most of the pa{>ers were rewritten, polished, and/or expanded; so the resulting book is a much more fimshed, comprehensive, and up-to-date product than a general proceedings. Chapter se~uences follow the original symposium program, which, with a few exceptions, juxtaposes like topics. Each chapter can stand more or less on its own-although, as in any complex, interrelated scientific field, there are many cross-references among chapters. The manuscripts were edited and then uniformly typed in the Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University. I tried to keep the editing to a minimum so as to preserve the flavor of individual styles. A great debt of gratitude goes to those who helped make this volume possible, especially to Vada O'Donnell, who bore the largest burden of typing (and clarifying) the manuscripts.

Book Shell Structure at High Spin and the Influence on Nuclear Shapes

Download or read book Shell Structure at High Spin and the Influence on Nuclear Shapes written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear structure at high spin is influenced by a combination of liquid-drop and shell-structure effects. For N 86 both contribute towards the occurrence along the yrast line of high-spin oblate aligned-particle configurations. Shell effects are mainly responsible for the prolate deformation of nuclei with N 90. The competition between oblate and prolate driving effects leads to a prolate-to-oblate shape transition in 154Dy. The role of rotation-aligned configurations in the shape change is discussed.
