NRC, an independent agency created by the Congress in 1974, is responsible for, among other things, ensuring that the operation of the nation's 110 commercial nuclear power plants occurs in a manner that adequately protects the health and safety of the public. Identifying plants with safety problems and making sure that the owners of the plants correct their safety deficiencies promptly is critical to NRC'S safety mission. As agreed with your offices, we focused our review on how NRC (1) defines nuclear safety, (2) measures and monitors the safety condition of nuclear plants, and (3) uses its knowledge of safety conditions to ensure the safety of nuclear plants.
