Book Nuclear Regulatory Commission Challenges Facing NRC in Effectively Carrying Out Its Mission

Download or read book Nuclear Regulatory Commission Challenges Facing NRC in Effectively Carrying Out Its Mission written by Jim Wells and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NRC has the regulatory responsibility to ensure that the nation¿s 103 commercial nuclear power plants are operated in a safe and secure manner. Safety issues have arisen that threaten the credibility of NRC¿s regulation and oversight. The terrorist attacks on 9/11 focused attention on the security of commercial nuclear power plants, while safety concerns were heightened by shutdown of the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant in 2002, and the discovery of missing or unaccounted for spent nuclear fuel at 3 nuclear power plants. This testimony: summarizes audit findings as of 2005 and recommend. for improving NRC activities; and presents challenges NRC faces in being an effective and credible regulator of the nuclear power industry. Book Effective Risk Communication

Download or read book Effective Risk Communication written by Joseph Arvai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-30 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two questions often asked of risk communication: what has been learned from past work, and what is needed to push the field forward? Drawing on the experience of leading risk researchers and practitioners, Effective Risk Communication focuses on answering these questions. The book draws together new examples of research and practice from contexts as diverse as energy generation, human health, nuclear waste, climate change, food choice, and social media. This book treats risk communication as much more than the interchange of risk information between experts and non-experts; rather, it aims to emphasise the diversity in viewpoints and practices. In each specially commissioned chapter, the authors reflect on the theoretical and applied underpinnings of their best projects and comment on how their approach could be used effectively by others. Building upon each other, the chapters will provoke new discussion and action around a discipline which many feel is neither meeting important needs in practice, nor living up to its potential in research. Through a more careful examination of the work already done in risk communication, the book will help develop better, more reflective practice for the future.

Book Nuclear Safety

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Gaffigan
  • Publisher : DIANE Publishing
  • Release : 2009-02
  • ISBN : 1437907601
  • Pages : 40 pages

Download or read book Nuclear Safety written by Mark Gaffigan and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a 1975 fire at the Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama threatened the unit¿s ability to shut down safely, the Nuclear Regulatory Comm. (NRC) issued prescriptive fire safety rules for commercial nuclear units. However, nuclear units with different designs and different ages have had difficulty meeting these rules and have sought exemptions to them. In 2004, NRC began to encourage the nation¿s 104 nuclear units to transition to a less prescriptive, risk-informed approach that will analyze the fire risks of individual nuclear units. This report examines: (1) the number and causes of fire incidents at nuclear units since 1995; (2) compliance with NRC fire safety regulations; and (3) the transition to the new approach. Includes recommendations. Illustrations.

Book Nuclear Regulation Preventing Problem Plants Requires More Effective NRC Action

Download or read book Nuclear Regulation Preventing Problem Plants Requires More Effective NRC Action written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As requested, we reviewed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) oversight of the nuclear power industry. NRC, an independent agency created by the Congress in 1974, is responsible for, among other things, ensuring that the operation of the nation's 110 commercial nuclear power plants occurs in a manner that adequately protects the health and safety of the public. Identifying plants with safety problems and making sure that the owners of the plants correct their safety deficiencies promptly is critical to NRC'S safety mission. As agreed with your offices, we focused our review on how NRC (1) defines nuclear safety, (2) measures and monitors the safety condition of nuclear plants, and (3) uses its knowledge of safety conditions to ensure the safety of nuclear plants.

This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity, supplied reliably and affordably, is foundational to the U.S. economy and is utterly indispensable to modern society. However, emissions resulting from many forms of electricity generation create environmental risks that could have significant negative economic, security, and human health consequences. Large-scale installation of cleaner power generation has been generally hampered because greener technologies are more expensive than the technologies that currently produce most of our power. Rather than trade affordability and reliability for low emissions, is there a way to balance all three? The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies considers how to speed up innovations that would dramatically improve the performance and lower the cost of currently available technologies while also developing new advanced cleaner energy technologies. According to this report, there is an opportunity for the United States to continue to lead in the pursuit of increasingly clean, more efficient electricity through innovation in advanced technologies. The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies makes the case that America's advantagesâ€"world-class universities and national laboratories, a vibrant private sector, and innovative states, cities, and regions that are free to experiment with a variety of public policy approachesâ€"position the United States to create and lead a new clean energy revolution. This study focuses on five paths to accelerate the market adoption of increasing clean energy and efficiency technologies: (1) expanding the portfolio of cleaner energy technology options; (2) leveraging the advantages of energy efficiency; (3) facilitating the development of increasing clean technologies, including renewables, nuclear, and cleaner fossil; (4) improving the existing technologies, systems, and infrastructure; and (5) leveling the playing field for cleaner energy technologies. The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies is a call for leadership to transform the United States energy sector in order to both mitigate the risks of greenhouse gas and other pollutants and to spur future economic growth. This study's focus on science, technology, and economic policy makes it a valuable resource to guide support that produces innovation to meet energy challenges now and for the future.
