Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angular distributions of the heavy recoils produced in the (alpha,2n), (alpha,3n), (alpha,4n), (alpha, t), (d, n), (d,2n), (d,3n), and (d, p) reactions of Bi/sup 209/ have been measured at various incident-particle energies. The mechanisms of the (alpha,2n), (alpha,3n), and (d,3n) reactions have been inierpreted by comparison of these angular distributions with theoretical angular distributions resulting from Monte Carlo calculations based on a simple evaporation model. Further information concerning the reaction mechanisms of the (alpha,2n), (alpha,3n), and (alpha,4n) reactions is derived from the results of experimental recoil range measurements. Probable mechsnisms are suggested for several of the other reactions. (auth).

Book Nuclear Reactions in Heavy Elements

Download or read book Nuclear Reactions in Heavy Elements written by V. M. Gorbachev and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear Reactions in Heavy Elements: A Data Handbook focuses on the physical constants of the elements, the properties of isotopes, and data on radioactive decay. This book examines the methods for obtaining heavy elements. Organized into two parts encompassing nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of data on neutron cross-sections. This text then provides salient information on cross-sections of photo-reactions and of interactions of charged particles with nuclei. Other chapters consider some general characteristics of the fission process as well as the basic characteristics of spontaneous fission of heavy metals. This book discusses as well the basic characteristics of binary fission of heavy nuclei, including the energies and yields of fission elements, their distribution with regard to mass, and the range of fragments. The final chapter deals with data on various kinds of radiation accompanying the fission process. This book is a valuable resource for physicists and research workers.

Book Nuclear Reactions Used for Superheavy Element Research

Download or read book Nuclear Reactions Used for Superheavy Element Research written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most fascinating questions about the limits of nuclear stability are confronted in the heaviest nuclei. How many more new elements can be synthesized? What are the nuclear and chemical properties of these exotic nuclei? Does the 'Island of Stability' exist and can we ever explore the isotopes inhabiting that nuclear region? This paper will focus on the current experimental research on the synthesis and characterization of superheavy nuclei with Z> 112 from the Dubna/Livermore collaboration. Reactions using 48Ca projectiles from the U400 cyclotron and actinide targets ({sup 233,238}U, 237Np, {sup 242,244}Pu, 243Am, {sup 245,248}Cm, 249Cf) have been investigated using the Dubna Gas Filled Recoil Separator in Dubna over the last 8 years. In addition, several experiments have been performed to investigate the chemical properties of some of the observed longer-lived isotopes produced in these reactions. Some comments will be made on nuclear reactions used for the production of the heaviest elements. A summary of the current status of the upper end of the chart of nuclides will be presented.

Book Nuclear Reactions and Synthesis of New Transuranium Species

Download or read book Nuclear Reactions and Synthesis of New Transuranium Species written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this short review, I shall describe the special aspects of heavy ion nuclear reaction mechanisms operative in the transuranium region, the role of new techniques, possible nuclear reactions for the production of additional transuranium elements and nuclear species and the importance of work in this region for the development of nuclear models and theoretical concepts. This discussion should make it clear that a continuing supply of leements and isotopes, some fo them relatively short-lived, produced by the HFIR-TRU facilities, will be a requirement for future synthesis of new elements and isotopes.

Download or read book Nuclei in the Cosmos written by Heinz Oberhummer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear astrophysics as it stands today is a fascinating science. Even though, compared to other scientific fields, it is a young discipline which has developed only in this century, it has answered many questions concerning the under standing of our cosmos. One of these great achievements was the concept of nucleosynthesis, the creation of the elements in the early universe in interstellar matter and in stars. Nuclear astrophysics has continued, to solve many riddles of the evolution of the myriads of stars in our cosmos. This review volume attempts to provide an overview of the current status of nuclear astrophysics. Special emphasis is given to the interdisciplinary nature of the field: astronomy, nuclear physics, astrophysics and particle physics are equally involved. One basic effort of nuclear astrophysics is the collection of ob servational facts with astronomical methods. Laboratory studies of the nuclear processes involved in various astrophysical scenarios have provided fundamen tal information serving both as input for and test of astrophysical models. The theoretical understanding of nuclear reaction mechanisms is necessary, for example, to extrapolate the experimentally determined reaction rates to the thermonuclear energy range, which is relevant for the nuclear processes in our cosmos. Astrophysical models and calculations allow us to simulate how nuclear processes contribute to driving the evolution of stars, interstellar matter and the whole universe. Finally, elementary particle physics also plays an important role in the field of nuclear astrophysics, for instance through weak interaction processes involving neutrinos.

Book The Chemistry of Superheavy Elements

Download or read book The Chemistry of Superheavy Elements written by Matthias Schädel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to treat the chemistry of superheavy elements, including important related nuclear aspects, as a self contained topic. It is written for those – students and novices -- who begin to work and those who are working in this fascinating and challenging field of the heaviest and superheavy elements, for their lecturers, their advisers and for the practicing scientists in the field – chemists and physicists - as the most complete source of reference about our today's knowledge of the chemistry of transactinides and superheavy elements. However, besides a number of very detailed discussions for the experts this book shall also provide interesting and easy to read material for teachers who are interested in this subject, for those chemists and physicists who are not experts in the field and for our interested fellow scientists in adjacent fields. Special emphasis is laid on an extensive coverage of the original literature in the reference part of each of the eight chapters to facilitate further and deeper studies of specific aspects. The index for each chapter should provide help to easily find a desired topic and to use this book as a convenient source to get fast access to a desired topic. Superheavy elements – chemical elements which are much heavier than those which we know of from our daily life – are a persistent dream in human minds and the kernel of science fiction literature for about a century.
