During the year new information and understanding were made to neutron physics, multi-particle break-up, nuclear spectroscopy, nuclear structure, nuclear theory, and certain applied problems.

Book excerpt: The year has seen a continuation of experimental and theoretical studies of intermediate energy physics and an extension of development of required instrumentation and applications to medical problems. Experiments have been carried out at the Space Radiation Effects Laboratory (SREL) in the areas of small angle proton and pion multiple scattering. Coulomb-nuclear interference total cross section measurements, and pion therapy dosimetry. Experiments were started in multi-particle final state measurements. These experiments are all preparatory to approved experiments at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF). During the year a portable laboratory was constructed in a Fruehauf trailer and an on-line computer system installed that is especially designed for use with many multi-wire proportional counters at LAMPF at high data rates. The principal collaborators in this work were the University of Houston group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the year 1973 the program goals of carrying out experimental and theoretical studies in intermediate energy physics were continued. Work at the Space Radiation Effects Laboratory on small-angle pion Coulomb multiple scattering from nuclei was completed, and the small-angle Coulomb--nuclear interference studies and total cross sections were continued. Experiments on p--d breakup were started and, in addition to observing quasi-free nucleon-- nucleon scattering, a strongly enhanced neutron--proton final state interaction was observed at 585 MeV for the first time. In July 1973 the outfitting of the Rice-owned portable laboratory was completed, including operation of the AEC-owned PDP-11 online computer system, and the laboratory was moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico (LAMPF). In the fall of 1973 the group aided the LAMPF staff in tuning the P3 pion channel. Principal collaborators in all this work were the University of Houston group. (auth).
