Book Nuclear Induced Plasmas of Gas Mixtures and Nuclear Pumped Lasers

Download or read book Nuclear Induced Plasmas of Gas Mixtures and Nuclear Pumped Lasers written by Mendykhan U. Khasenov and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We briefly describe the basic processes of formation and relaxation of nuclear-induced plasmas of gas mixtures, especially the processes of inverse population creation in nuclear-pumped lasers (NPL). A review of the work to create and research nuclear-pumped lasers is in progress: on transitions of atoms and atomic ions and on molecular transitions. An increased focus is on the gas media, which we also study on WWR-K nuclear reactor and DC-60 ion accelerator. The studies on emission of heteronuclear ionic molecules of inert gases are also reviewed.

Book Laser Plasmas and Nuclear Energy

Download or read book Laser Plasmas and Nuclear Energy written by Heinrich Hora and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of this book was written before October 1973. Thus the statements concerning the energy crisis are now dated, but remain valid nevertheless. However, the term "energy crisis" is no longer the unusual new concept it was when the material was written; it is, rather, a commonplace expression for a condition with which we are all only too familiar. The purpose of this book is to point out that the science and technology of laser-induced nuclear fusion are an extraordinary subject, which in some way not yet completely clear can solve the problem of gaining a pollution-free and really inexhaustible supply of inexpensive energy from the heavy hydrogen (deuterium) atoms found in all terrestrial waters. The concept is very obvious and very simple: To heat solid deuterium or mixtures of deuterium and tritium (superheavy hydrogen) by laser pulses so rapidly that despite the resulting expansion and cooling there still take place so many nuclear fusion reactions tnat the energy produced is greater than the laser energy that had to be applied. Compression of the plasma by the laser radiation itself is a more sophisticated refinement of the process, but one which at the present stage of laser cechnology is needed for the rapid realization of a laser-fusion reactor for power generation. This concept of compression can also be applied to the development of completely safe reactors with controlled microexplosions of laser-compressed fissionable materials such as uranium and even boron, which fission completely safely into nonradioactive helium atoms.

Book Research on Fission Induced Plasmas and Nuclear Pumped Lasers at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory

Download or read book Research on Fission Induced Plasmas and Nuclear Pumped Lasers at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gaseous fueled reactor system has the potential of several distinct advantages as an advanced power source. Because of these advantages it appears possible that this may be an ideal reactor for power production and for space propulsion. Characteristics such as high operating efficiency and low uranium inventory are particularly attractive. Advances in certain technology areas must be accomplished before it will be possible to produce an engineering design for a gaseous fueled power station. Corrosion problems of fluorine and uranium hexafluoride with materials must be solved, however, recent advances indicate these problems are not insurmountable. The vortex flow of buffer gas confinement obviates the most severe environment in the flow system. The feasibility of such confinement has been demonstrated successfully for small-scale devices and the present experimental activity is aimed at demonstration of the principle in the reactor environment at moderate power levels. Concurrently, efforts are being made to address the problems of adapting the gas core reactor concept to be used as a power supply for nuclear pumped lasers. Experimental and theoretical work is producing better understanding of fundamental phenomena, however, further progress must be made before engineering problems may be addressed. Continued work in this field is particularly interesting to NASA because of the potentially important benefits in space applications.

Book Recent Nuclear Pumped Laser Results

Download or read book Recent Nuclear Pumped Laser Results written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent direct nuclear pumped laser research at the University of Illinois has concentrated on experiments with three gas mixtures (Ne-N/sub 2/, He-Ne-O/sub 2/, and He-Hg). One mixture has been made to lase and gain has been achieved with the other two. All three of these mixtures are discussed with particular attention paid to He-Hg. Of interest for DNP work is the 6150-A ion transition in Hg/sup +/. The upper state of this transition is formed directly by charge transfer and by Penning ionization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives the readers an introduction to experimental and theoretical knowledge acquired by large-scale laser laboratories that are dealing with extra-high peak power and ultrashort laser pulses for research of terawatt (TW), petawatt (PW), or near-future exawatt (EW) laser interactions, for soft X-ray sources, for acceleration of particles, or for generation of hot dense thermal plasma for the laser fusion. The other part of this book is dealing with the small-scale laser laboratories that are using for its research on commercial sources of laser radiation, nanosecond (ns), picosecond (ps), or femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, either for basic research or for more advanced applications. This book is divided into six main sections dealing with short and ultrashort laser pulses, laser-produced soft X-ray sources, large-scale high-power laser systems, free-electron lasers, fiber-based sources of short optical pulse, and applications of short pulse lasers. In each chapter readers can find fascinating topics related to the high energy and/or short pulse laser technique. Individual chapters should serve the broad spectrum of readers of different expertise, layman, undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, and engineers, who may in this book find easily explained fundamentals as well as advanced principles of particular subjects related to these phenomena.

Book Heat transfer Regimes in Nuclear reactor pumped Gas Lasers

Download or read book Heat transfer Regimes in Nuclear reactor pumped Gas Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flow induced in nuclear-reactor-pumped gas lasers by the competing effects of spatially nonuniform fission-fragment heating (pumping) and heat transfer to the walls is examined. The equations of motion are acoustically filtered (low Mach number approximation), and the resulting equations are seen to have three timescales: the duration of the heating, the time required by the heating to produce a pressure rise comparable to the initial pressure, and the time for the thermal boundary layer to grow into the center of the laser cell. Three distinct regimes emerge from consideration of the relative magnitudes of these timescales. In the negligible-conduction regime, thermal-conduction effects are small, and the motion is determined by the spatial nonuniformity of the heating. In the dominant-conduction regime, thermal-conduction effects govern the motion. In the mixed regime, the effects of thermal conduction and heating nonuniformity are comparable, but since they are oppositely directed, a complex gas motion results. Analytical solutions to the equations of motion are presented for the negligible-conduction and dominant-conduction regimes, and examples are given for all three regimes. Plots of the second spatial derivative of the density field (a quantity often used in optical analyses) are given for the negligible-conduction and the dominant-conduction regimes as functions of the appropriate similarity parameters. 26 refs., 14 figs.

Book Recombination Pumped Atomic Nitrogen and Carbon Afterglow Lasers

Download or read book Recombination Pumped Atomic Nitrogen and Carbon Afterglow Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well established that lasing of atomic nitrogen and carbon can be obtained during the afterglow of an electrical discharge in gas mixtures of either neon or helium containing low partial pressures of N/sub 2/ or CO. In addition, the neon-nitrogen laser has recently been pumped directly by nuclear radiation. Microwave quenching experiments have shown conclusively that the afterglow lasers are being pumped directly by the recombination of electron-ion pairs. This result differs from the mechanisms previously proposed for these systems. Measurements comparing the relative sensitivity to the electron temperature of the neon to atomic nitrogen and carbon afterglow light infer that the recombination process pumping these lasers is collisional-radiative, allowing the recombining ions to be identified as N/sup +/ and C/sup +/. Since this process is highly compatible with nuclear-radiation generated plasmas, it is not unreasonable to infer that this process is also the pumping mechanism in the nuclear-excited, neon-nitrogen laser.
