Book excerpt: This book examines the application of soybean genome sequences to comparative, structural, and functional genomics. Since the availability of the soybean genome sequence has revolutionized molecular research on this important crop species, the book also describes how the genome sequence has shaped research on transposon biology and applications for gene identification, tilling and positional gene cloning. Further, the book shows how the genome sequence influences research in the areas of genetic mapping, marker development, and genome-wide association mapping for identifying important trait genes and soybean breeding. In closing, the economic and botanical aspects of the soybean are also addressed.

This book covers recent advances in soybean genome research, including classical, RFLP, SSR, and SNP markers; genomic and cDNA libraries; functional genomics platforms; genetic and physical maps; and gene expression profiles. The book is for researchers and students in plant genetics and genomics, plant biology and pathology, agronomy, and food sciences.

Book Genetics Genomics and Breeding of Soybean

Download or read book Genetics Genomics and Breeding of Soybean written by Kristin Bilyeu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to human consumption, the soybean is a major protein source in animal feeds and is becoming a major crop for biodiesel production. For many decades, plant breeders have used conventional breeding techniques to improve soybeans, yet with increasing demand, there is a need for more sophisticated techniques. Combining traditional research with modern molecular investigations on soybean, this volume explores the recent advances in soybean genome mapping, molecular breeding, genome sequencing, and bioinformatics. The book is an important tool for soybean researchers as well as researchers working with other crop species.

Book Genetic Analysis of Reproductive Traits in Soybean Glycine Max L Merr

Download or read book Genetic Analysis of Reproductive Traits in Soybean Glycine Max L Merr written by I. Made Tasma and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten of the 18 homologous and cloned flowering time gene sequences have been mapped. The gene sequences were mapped onto LGs A2 (CRY2), B1 and H (COLI), Al and B2 (PHYA), C1 (DET1 and LD), D2 (AP2), E and K (PHYB), F (COL2), L (FCA), and Q (CCA1). None of these cDNA sequences have been found to be directly associated with previously mapped QTL for flowering time. However, analyses of these candidate genes using NILs show that the FCA homolog was associated with maturity locus E3. The map positions and phenotypic data support that homologous gene sequence FCA is a strong candidate for maturity locus E3. Analyses of NILs suggest that PHYB homolog may be associated with maturity locus El. However, current data show El and PHYB mapped in different LGs.

Book Genetically Engineered Crops

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2017-01-28
  • ISBN : 0309437385
  • Pages : 607 pages

Download or read book Genetically Engineered Crops written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-01-28 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetically engineered (GE) crops were first introduced commercially in the 1990s. After two decades of production, some groups and individuals remain critical of the technology based on their concerns about possible adverse effects on human health, the environment, and ethical considerations. At the same time, others are concerned that the technology is not reaching its potential to improve human health and the environment because of stringent regulations and reduced public funding to develop products offering more benefits to society. While the debate about these and other questions related to the genetic engineering techniques of the first 20 years goes on, emerging genetic-engineering technologies are adding new complexities to the conversation. Genetically Engineered Crops builds on previous related Academies reports published between 1987 and 2010 by undertaking a retrospective examination of the purported positive and adverse effects of GE crops and to anticipate what emerging genetic-engineering technologies hold for the future. This report indicates where there are uncertainties about the economic, agronomic, health, safety, or other impacts of GE crops and food, and makes recommendations to fill gaps in safety assessments, increase regulatory clarity, and improve innovations in and access to GE technology.
