Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Is Molten Salt Reactor A kind of nuclear fission reactor known as a molten salt reactor, or MSR for short, is one in which the main nuclear reactor coolant and/or the fuel is a mixture of molten salt. There have only ever been two MSRs in operation, and both of them were research reactors in the United States. The Molten-Salt Reactor Experiment of the 1960s aimed to prove the concept of a nuclear power plant that implements a thorium fuel cycle in a breeder reactor, whereas the Aircraft Reactor Experiment of the 1950s was primarily motivated by the compact size that the technique offers. The Aircraft Reactor Experiment was conducted in the 1950s. Increased research into Generation IV reactor designs started to reinvigorate interest in the technology, and as of September 2021, China was on the brink of beginning its TMSR-LF1 thorium MSR. This interest was sparked by the fact that numerous countries had projects using the technology. Book Liquid Fuel Molten Salt Reactors for Thorium Utilization

Download or read book Liquid Fuel Molten Salt Reactors for Thorium Utilization written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molten salt reactors (MSRs) represent a class of reactors that use liquid salt, usually fluoride- or chloride-based, as either a coolant with a solid fuel (such as fluoride salt-cooled high temperature reactors) or as a combined coolant and fuel with fuel dissolved in a carrier salt. For liquid-fuelled MSRs, the salt can be processed online or in a batch mode to allow for removal of fission products as well as introduction of fissile fuel and fertile materials during reactor operation. The MSR is most commonly associated with the 233U/thorium fuel cycle, as the nuclear properties of 233U combined with the online removal of parasitic absorbers allow for the ability to design a thermal-spectrum breeder reactor; however, MSR concepts have been developed using all neutron energy spectra (thermal, intermediate, fast, and mixed-spectrum zoned concepts) and with a variety of fuels including uranium, thorium, plutonium, and minor actinides. Early MSR work was supported by a significant research and development (R & D) program that resulted in two experimental systems operating at ORNL in the 1960s, the Aircraft Reactor Experiment and the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment. Subsequent design studies in the 1970s focusing on thermal-spectrum thorium-fueled systems established reference concepts for two major design variants: (1) a molten salt breeder reactor (MSBR), with multiple configurations that could breed additional fissile material or maintain self-sustaining operation; and (2) a denatured molten salt reactor (DMSR) with enhanced proliferation-resistance. T MSRs has been selected as one of six most promising Generation IV systems and development activities have been seen in fast-spectrum MSRs, waste-burning MSRs, MSRs fueled with low-enriched uranium (LEU), as well as more traditional thorium fuel cycle-based MSRs. This study provides an historical background of MSR R & D efforts, surveys and summarizes many of the recent development, and provides analysis comparing thorium-based MSRs.

Book Molten Salt Breeder Reactors

Download or read book Molten Salt Breeder Reactors written by and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems involved in buildiing a molten-salt thermalbreeder reactor are reviewed, and it is concluded that the most feasible construction is an externally-cooled reactor with the fuel salt passing through the reactcr core in graphite tubes. A reactor with 15% of the core vollume occupied by fuel salt and 5% occupied by fertile salt would have a net breeding ratio of about 1.06. The specific power is about 3.0 Mw(th) per kg of U/sup 233/, U/sup 235/, and Pa in the entire reactor and chemical processing system, The resulting doubling time is 13 fuil-power years. The cost of the fuel cycle for a 1000-Mw(e) station with this breeding performance is estimated to be 1.2 mills/kwhr, The performance in terms of material utilization is an output of 1,18 Mw(e) per kg of U/sup 233/, U/ sup 235/, and Pa, and 3.2 Mw(e) per metric ton of Th. The latter figure could be increased by a factor of two at a sacrifice of 0.01 in breeding ratio, (auth).

Book Improving Fuel Cycle Design and Safety Characteristics of a Gas Cooled Fast Reactor

Download or read book Improving Fuel Cycle Design and Safety Characteristics of a Gas Cooled Fast Reactor written by Willem Frederik Geert van Rooijen and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Generation IV Forum is an international nuclear energy research initiative aimed at developing the fourth generation of nuclear reactors, envisaged to enter service halfway the 21st century. One of the Generation IV reactor systems is the Gas Cooled Fast Reactor (GCFR), the subject of study in this thesis. The Generation IV reactor concepts should improve all aspects of nuclear power generation. Within Generation IV, the GCFR concept specifically targets sustainability of nuclear power generation. The Gas Cooled Fast Reactor core power density is high in comparison to other gas cooled reactor concepts. Like all nuclear reactors, the GCFR produces decay heat after shut down, which has to be transported out of the reactor under all circumstances. The layout of the primary system therefore focuses on using natural convection Decay Heat Removal (DHR) where possible, with a large coolant fraction in the core to reduce friction losses.
