Book The Politics of CANDU Exports

Download or read book The Politics of CANDU Exports written by Duane Bratt and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the most comprehensive history of the export of CANDU reactors to date. A pressurized heavy water natural-uranium power reactor designed and marketed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, the CANDU reactor has played a significant part in Canada's international trade. In this history, Duane Bratt examines every CANDU sale, as well as some important unsuccessful sales attempts, from 1956 to the present. He also outlines the impact that changes in the international political climate, such as the creation and strengthening of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and the increasing importance of human rights and environmental protection, have had on CANDU exports over the last fifty years.

Book The Global Politics of Combating Nuclear Terrorism

Download or read book The Global Politics of Combating Nuclear Terrorism written by William C. Potter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most difficult challenge for a terrorist organization seeking to build a nuclear weapon or improvised nuclear device is obtaining fissile material, either plutonium or highly enriched uranium (HEU). Experts acknowledge that obtaining HEU, uranium that has been processed to increase the proportion of the U-235 isotope to over 20%, is the most difficult challenge facing a state or non-state actor seeking to build a nuclear explosive. The large stocks of HEU in civilian use, many not adequately protected, are thus one of the greatest security risks facing the global community at present. This book contains chapters examining the various uses for this material and possible alternatives; the threat posed by this material; the economic, political and strategic obstacles to international efforts to end the use of HEU for commercial and research purposes; as well as new national and international measures that should be taken to further the elimination of HEU. This book was published as a special issue of The Nonproliferation Review.

Book International Relations in the Nuclear Age

Download or read book International Relations in the Nuclear Age written by Henry L. Bretton and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1985-11-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely introduction to the study of international relations places special emphasis on the politics of international economics and the nuclear threat. Written for beginning students, the book combines comprehensive and realistic introductory material basic to the study of international relations with in-depth case studies of major issues and problem areas such as management of the world economy and management of world military power, East-West and North-South (rich nation vs. poor nation) conflicts, and the struggle for resources and ways and means of preventing World War III. Readers untrained in economics will find the subject matter introduced before it is discussed in its applied form. Henry L. Bretton has published widely on Western and non-Western government, politics, and international relations. He is currently Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the State University of New York College at Brockport.

Book Restoring U S Leadership in Nuclear Energy

Download or read book Restoring U S Leadership in Nuclear Energy written by The CSIS Commission on Nuclear Energy Policy in the United States and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s nuclear energy industry is in decline. Low natural gas prices, financing hurdles, failure to find a permanent repository for high-level nuclear waste, reactions to the Fukushima accident in Japan, and other factors are hastening the day when existing U.S. reactors become uneconomic. The decline of the U.S. nuclear energy industry could be much more rapid than policy makers and stakeholders anticipate. China, India, Russia, and others plan on adding nuclear technology to their mix, furthering the spread of nuclear materials around the globe. U.S. companies must meet a significant share of this demand for nuclear technology, but U.S. firms are currently at a competitive disadvantage due to restrictive and otherwise unsupportive export policies. Without a strong commercial presence in new markets, America’s ability to influence nonproliferation policies and nuclear safety behaviors worldwide is bound to diminish. The United States cannot afford to become irrelevant in a new nuclear age.

Book Exporting the Bomb

Download or read book Exporting the Bomb written by Matthew Kroenig and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a vitally important book for anyone interested in nuclear proliferation, defense strategy, or international security, Matthew Kroenig points out that nearly every country with a nuclear weapons arsenal received substantial help at some point from a more advanced nuclear state. Why do some countries help others to develop nuclear weapons? Many analysts assume that nuclear transfers are driven by economic considerations. States in dire economic need, they suggest, export sensitive nuclear materials and technology—and ignore the security risk—in a desperate search for hard currency. Kroenig challenges this conventional wisdom. He finds that state decisions to provide sensitive nuclear assistance are the result of a coherent, strategic logic. The spread of nuclear weapons threatens powerful states more than it threatens weak states, and these differential effects of nuclear proliferation encourage countries to provide sensitive nuclear assistance under certain strategic conditions. Countries are more likely to export sensitive nuclear materials and technology when it would have the effect of constraining an enemy and less likely to do so when it would threaten themselves. In Exporting the Bomb, Kroenig examines the most important historical cases, including France's nuclear assistance to Israel in the 1950s and 1960s; the Soviet Union's sensitive transfers to China from 1958 to 1960; China's nuclear aid to Pakistan in the 1980s; and Pakistan's recent technology transfers, with the help of "rogue" scientist A. Q. Khan, from 1987 to 2002. Understanding why states provide sensitive nuclear assistance not only adds to our knowledge of international politics but also aids in international efforts to control the spread of nuclear weapons.
