Book Assessing Medical Preparedness to Respond to a Terrorist Nuclear Event

Download or read book Assessing Medical Preparedness to Respond to a Terrorist Nuclear Event written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-08-19 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nuclear attack on a large U.S. city by terrorists-even with a low-yield improvised nuclear device (IND) of 10 kilotons or less-would cause a large number of deaths and severe injuries. The large number of injured from the detonation and radioactive fallout that would follow would be overwhelming for local emergency response and health care systems to rescue and treat, even assuming that these systems and their personnel were not themselves incapacitated by the event. The United States has been struggling for some time to address and plan for the threat of nuclear terrorism and other weapons of mass destruction that terrorists might obtain and use. The Department of Homeland Security recently contracted with the Institute of Medicine to hold a workshop, summarized in this volume, to assess medical preparedness for a nuclear detonation of up to 10 kilotons. This book provides a candid and sobering look at our current state of preparedness for an IND, and identifies several key areas in which we might begin to focus our national efforts in a way that will improve the overall level of preparedness.

Book Nationwide Response Issues After an Improvised Nuclear Device Attack

Download or read book Nationwide Response Issues After an Improvised Nuclear Device Attack written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-01-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our nation faces the distinct possibility of a catastrophic terrorist attack using an improvised nuclear device (IND), according to international and U.S. intelligence. Detonation of an IND in a major U.S. city would result in tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of victims and would overwhelm public health, emergency response, and health care systems, not to mention creating unprecedented social and economic challenges. While preparing for an IND may seem futile at first glance, thousands of lives can be saved by informed planning and decision making prior to and following an attack. In 2009, the Institute of Medicine published the proceedings of a workshop assessing the health and medical preparedness for responding to an IND detonation. Since that time, multiple federal and other publications have added layers of detail to this conceptual framework, resulting in a significant body of literature and guidance. However, there has been only limited planning effort at the local level as much of the federal guidance has not been translated into action for states, cities and counties. According to an informal survey of community preparedness by the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO), planning for a radiation incident ranked lowest in priority among other hazards by 2,800 local health departments. The focus of Nationwide Response Issues After an Improvised Nuclear Device Attack: Medical and Public Health Considerations for Neighboring Jurisdictions: Workshop Summary is on key response requirements faced by public health and health care systems in response to an IND detonation, especially those planning needs of outlying state and local jurisdictions from the detonation site. The specific meeting objectives were as follows: - Understand the differences between types of radiation incidents and implications of an IND attack on outlying communities. -Highlight current planning efforts at the federal, state, and local level as well as challenges to the implementation of operational plans. -Examine gaps in planning efforts and possible challenges and solutions. -Identify considerations for public health reception centers: how public health and health care interface with functions and staffing and how radiological assessments and triage be handled. -Discuss the possibilities and benefits of integration of disaster transport systems. -Explore roles of regional health care coalitions in coordination of health care response.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nuclear crisis in Fukushima and growing threats of nuclear terrorism must serve as a wake-up call, prompting greater action to prepare ourselves for nuclear and radiological disasters. Our strategy to prepare for these threats is multi-layered and the events of these past years have proved the necessity to re-evaluate the national and international preparedness goals on a scale never before considered. The programme of NATO Advanced Research Workshop on “Preparedness for Nuclear and Radiological Threats” has been focused on science and technology challenges associated with our need to improve the national and international capacity and capability to prevent, protect against, mitigate the effects of, respond to, and recover from the nuclear and radiological disasters, including nuclear and radiological accident, terrorist attack by Improvised Nuclear Device (IND) or by “Dirty Bomb”-Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD), that pose the greatest risk to the national and international security and safety.

Book excerpt: Today’s global political climate is volatile, with the threat of a world nuclear war looming daily. Modern hypersonic warheads can reach any city on the planet in just 20 minutes, making them nearly impossible to defend against or warn about. Considering that the side which strikes first has a higher chance of winning by overwhelming the enemy, the actual “red lines” are unknown to everyone outside the smallest circles of power. Once these lines are crossed by one side or the other, it will be too late for everyone else to prepare for a nuclear war. So, is investing 1 hour of your time learning nuclear war survival skills and how to survive a nuclear war worthwhile? The devastating events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki proved that there will always be survivors in the aftermath of a nuclear explosion. These people did a few things right that made all the difference, and after reading or listening to this short book, you’ll know these critical steps too. By dedicating just 10-15 minutes each day to reading or listening, you'll quickly learn (in less than a week):The science behind nuclear weapons and how they operate. The five types of damage they cause and how to protect yourself and your loved ones from each. How to prepare and recover from a nuclear attack in your area. Strategies for shielding yourself from fallout and safely decontaminating water. How to identify high-risk targets and assess your radiation exposure. Different building materials and how they act as a protective shelter. The essential supplies you need to survive. The steps you need to take to protect your electronics from an EMP. How to identify radiation poisoning and the role of potassium iodide tablets. The minimum amount of time you need to stay inside a shelter after a nuclear detonation nearby, and how to know when it is safe to come out. And much more. The basics take about an hour to read or listen to, and the bonus information takes just a few minutes longer. Surviving a nuclear war is possible with the right preparation. You'll know exactly what to do before and after a nuclear attack in one short hour. he possibility of another world war is always present, and most people believe it's not a matter of "if" but "when." However, like insurance, being prepared is always better than being caught off guard. So, why not take the time to cover the basics in just 60 minutes of reading or listening? Be ready for one of the worst and most stressful situations imaginable, just in case. David Kobler is an Infantry Veteran with extensive combat experience in stressful survival situations. Interagency Policy Coordination Subcommittee for Preparedness and Response to Radiological and Nuclear Threats and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most catastrophic incidents that could befall the United States (US), causing enormous loss of life and property and severely damaging economic viability, is a nuclear detonation in a US city. It is incumbent upon all levels of government, as well as public and private parties within the US, to prepare for this incident through focused nuclear attack response planning. Nuclear explosions present substantial and immediate radiological threats to life and a severely damaged response infrastructure. Local and State community preparedness to respond to a nuclear detonation could result in life-saving on the order of tens of thousands of lives. The purpose of this guidance is to provide emergency planners with nuclear detonation-specific response recommendations to maximize the preservation of life in the event of an urban nuclear detonation. This guidance addresses the unique effects and impacts of a nuclear detonation such as scale of destruction, shelter and evacuation strategies, unparalleled medical demands, management of nuclear casualties, and radiation dose management concepts. The guidance is aimed at response activities in an environment with a severely compromised infrastructure for the first few days (i.e., 24 - 72 hours) when it is likely that many Federal resources will still be en route to the incident.

Download or read book Survive the Bomb written by Eric G. Swedin and published by Quarto Publishing Group USA. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the American government’s Cold War national defense measures and public communications regarding protection from nuclear disaster. The launch of Russia’s Sputnik satellite in 1957 began an era where American citizens were haunted by fears of annihilation. Baby Boomers will remember Bert the Turtle, who instructed them how to “duck and cover.” Survive the Bomb documents other U.S. government efforts to calm the collective psyche with nuclear survival handouts. These cheerful and naïve representations unintentionally inspired countless schoolchildren to question authority at an early age. This strange era reached its peak in 1962 with the Cuban Missile Crisis, lasting at least until the fall of the Berlin Wall. The nightmare still lingers today with the terrorist threat of dirty bombs and efforts by countries like Iran and North Korea to build their own nuclear arsenals. In addition to Civil Defense brochures and pamphlets from the period, Survive the Bomb includes: · Aftermath descriptions and casualty estimates at various distances from a nuclear blast · Civil Defense reports and recommendations to the United States Congress and President · Declassified nuclear wargame scenarios where the Department of Defense imagined the unimaginable · An introduction and commentaries by Cold War historian Eric G. Swedin
