Book excerpt: Work done between September 1, 1978, and September 1, 1979, involved the study of low-energy and relativistic heavy-ion reactions. In the former area most of the effort went into a careful re-examination of the failure to synthesize superheavy elements in complete fusion reactions. It was concluded that fission barriers are of the order of 5 or 6 MeV corresponding to a half-life of 105 years, a value precluding their occurrence in nature. In the area of relativistic heavy-ion (RHI) reaction studies, the most interesting results came in studies of the energy dependence of the product mass and charge distributions resulting from the interaction of RHIs with U and studies of the recoil properties of the target residues produced in the reaction of RHIs with heavy targets. Lists of personnel, publications, and oral presentations are included, along with a collection of reprints and preprints. Eight of the individual articles in this report are indexed separately.

Book excerpt: The prinicpal effort during this contract period was directed toward preparing for on-line radiochemical experiments at LAMPF directed toward studying rare processes such as (.pi.−, .pi.), (n, .delta./sup + +/) and (.mu.−, e+) in 88Sr. Chemical scavenging techniques to remove interfering products were shown to be effective without significantly affecting the sensitivity of the detection system. Sensitivities of less than 0.1 .mu.b for the first two processes appear achievable. Detailed statistical analysis of last years' experiments is leading to new limits, about an order of magnitude lower than already reported, on the formation of polyneutrons, reinforcing the conclusion that such species are not particle stable. 100−GeV .pi.− studies of copper spallation are revealing no dramatic differences between spallation with pions and that with protons. Essentially, this report consists of a collection of abstract-like summaries.

This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project entails the investigation of deep nuclear spallation reactions induced by high-energy light particles on complex nuclei. Experimental studies involve activation of various medium- to heavy-mass targets bombarded by pi mesons, protons, and alpha particles. A prime objective is to deconvolve the cascade and evaporation steps in the reaction mechanism. Experimentally, then, particular emphasis has been placed on spallation products far from yield maxima. Irradiations have been performed predominantly at the Clinton P. Anderson Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility. Results from bombardments of 89Y with 190-MeV .pi.−, 800-MeV protons and 720-MeV alphas (SREL) have been nearly completed; mass-yield distributions were compared. Pion-induced neutron removal reactions have been presented for 9°Zr and 96Ru along with a serious critique of the final-state charge interaction hypothesis. Theoretical efforts are being directed at the evaporative behavior of very high-temperature nuclei as determined by the nuclear equation of state and how such behavior might become evident in spallation processes. In addition, the soft spheres model has been extended to consider the significance of nuclear transparency in high-energy reactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first on-line operation of the Princeton electron spectrometer was achieved and its capability for fast life time measurements demonstrated. The first operation of the heavy ion source was achieved and beams of 75 meV 12C/sup +4/ ions and 37 MeV 6Li/sup +2/ ions demonstrated. The capability of the isotope separator to provide pure mass separated samples of radioisotopes is being utilized for three different applications. The very weak electron capture branch of 19-s krypton 81m to bromine 81 was studied. This transition probability is of crucial importance for a possible solar neutrino detection method based on natural bromine. Lead 202 has been prepared and mass separated for optical hyperfine spectroscopic studies. The isotope shift shift which measures the second moment, r2, of the nuclear charge indicates the more neutron deficient lead isotopes are becoming increasingly soft toward nuclear deformation.

This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research activities during the period August 1, 1978 to July 31, 1979 are summarized. The major effort has continued to be devoted to the study of nucleon exchange and energy dissipation mechanisms in damped heavy-ion reactions. Among the most significant accomplishments of the program during the past year has been the measurement of damped fragment spectra with discrete Z and A resolution. These studies provided detailed information on the A/Z equilibration and nucleon exchange processes in damped heavy-ion collisions, gave evidence for structure in the partially damped energy spectra for the Fe + Fe reaction, showed the importance of target-projectile mass asymmetry in governing the evolution of damped reactions, and gave tentative evidence for several new isotopes in the Z = 22 to 26 range. Other experiments utilized the fission-fragment angular correlation technique to determine the linear momentum transfer from projectile to target for 16O reactions in the 8- to 20-MeV/u region and to study simultaneously light-ion spectra (Z = 1 to 8) in coincidence with correlated events. These studies provided a much clearer picture of properties of central and peripheral collisions in heavy-ion reactions, as well as the transition between these two extremes. In addition, problems of Li, Be, and B nucleosynthesis and the relationship of these results to the question of the expanding universe were investigated. Individual sections with significant amounts of information are abstracted separately. (RWR).
