Book excerpt: We describe the conceptual design of an infrared (I-R) beam line on the vacuum-ultra-violet storage ring of the National Synchrotron Light Source. The beam line forms part of the Phase II expansion of the NSLS. Consistent with the implementation of the current design is the extraction of hitherto wasted radiation and the establishment of a mezzanine floor or platform to make full use of the available headroom. This means that the I-R beam line, once established, does not interfere with any existing operations on the VUV floor.

Book excerpt: The mechanical design of the Infrared Beam Line Mirror No. 1 (IRBL M1) at the NSLS facility was done with the aid of finite element modeling. Preliminary heat load calculations indicated that the Gaussian peak power density incident on M1 is about 345.8 w/sq. cm. The thermal gradient due to this concentrated high heat density striking M1 may result in undesirable distortions that can seriously impair its function. In addition, the thermal stress might reach levels beyond the yield strength of the mirror thereby compromising its structural integrity. Hence, a finite element model was developed to study the associated thermal the associated thermal and structural problems. The generation of the finite element mesh was done with the PREP7 module of ANSYS. After applying the appropriate parameters and boundary conditions, a thermal analysis was performed and the results were passed into the structural model in order to obtain the displacement/stress solution. A similar finite element model was analyzed using SUPERTAB and SUPERB of SDRC's IDEAS. 4 refs., 6 figs.

Book excerpt: Considerable investment by both the Department of Energy and the facility's Participating Research teams has permitted the NSLS to offer a national facility to a wide range of scientific pursuits. The purpose of the NSLS Phase III project is to maximize the scientific output of this premier 2nd generation synchrotron radiation facility through a number of distinct projects. Over the years the NSLS has made significant improvements in the area of beam reliability which has resulted in deliverable, reproducible beam during 98% and 97% of scheduled operations on the VUV and X-ray rings respectively. This project will focus on improving beam intensity and stability by upgrading the optics and detector systems on a number of beamlines as well as upgrading radio frequency (rf) and beam position monitoring systems in the storage rings. In addition, the project includes plans for the design and procurement of a utility isolation system that would guard against voltage transients that disrupt the facility's electrical system. Also a new insertion device will be installed at beamline X25 and a 2nd floor will be constructed over the X6 -- X16 region which will provide sorely needed laboratory and office space for the user community. This project requests funding of 22.5 million dollars over a three year period: FY 1996 ($6.3M), FY 1997 ($13.4M) and FY 1998 ($2.8M).
