Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), through its Division of Reactor Safety Research (RSR) of the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research, has established the NRC/RSR Data Bank Program to collect, process, and make available data from the many domestic and foreign water reactor safety research programs. An increasing number of requests for data and/or calculations generated by NRC Contractors led to the initiation of the program which allows timely and direct access to water reactor safety data in a manner most useful to the user. The program consists of three main elements: data sources, service organizations, and a data repository.

Book Improving Operations and Long Term Safety of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant

Download or read book Improving Operations and Long Term Safety of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-11 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a deep underground mined facility for the disposal of transuranic waste resulting from the nation's defense program. Transuranic waste is defined as waste contaminated with transuranic radionuclides with half-life greater than 20 years and activity greater than 100 nanocuries per gram. The waste mainly consists of contaminated protective clothing, rags, old tools and equipment, pieces of dismantled buildings, chemical residues, and scrap materials. The total activity of the waste expected to be disposed at the WIPP is estimated to be approximately 7 million curies, including 12,900 kilograms of plutonium distributed throughout the waste in very dilute form. The WIPP is located near the community of Carlsbad, in southeastern New Mexico. The geological setting is a 600-meter thick, 250 million-year-old saltbed, the Salado Formation, lying 660 meters below the surface. The National Research Council (NRC) has been providing the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) scientific and technical evaluations of the WIPP since 1978. The committee's task is twofold: (1) to identify technical issues that can be addressed to enhance confidence in the safe and long-term performance of the repository and (2) to identify opportunities for improving the National Transuranic (TRU) Program for waste management, especially with regard to the safety of workers and the public. This is the first full NRC report issued following the certification of the facility by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on May 18, 1998. An interim report was issued by the committee in April 2000 and is reproduced in this report. The main findings and recommendations from the interim report have been incorporated into the body of this report. The overarching finding and recommendation of this report is that the activity that would best enhance confidence in the safe and long-term performance of the repository is to monitor critical performance parameters during the long pre-closure phase of repository operations (35 to possibly 100 years). Indeed, in the first 50 to 100 years the rates of important processes such as salt creep, brine inflow (if any), and microbial activity are predicted to be the highest and will be less significant later. The committee recommends that the results of the on-site monitoring program be used to improve the performance assessment for recertification purposes. These results will determine whether the need for a new performance assessment is warranted. For the National TRU Program, the committee finds that the DOE is implementing many of the recommendations of its interim report. It is important that the DOE continue its efforts to improve the packaging, characterization, and transportation of the transuranic waste.

Download or read book Commercial Nuclear Waste written by Mark E. Gaffigan and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spent nuclear fuel -- considered very hazardous -- is accumulating at commercial reactor sites in 33 states. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 directs the Dept. of Energy (DoE) to dispose of this waste in a repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. In June 2008, DoE submitted a license application for the repository, but in March 2010 moved to withdraw it. However, the NRC or the courts could compel DoE to resume the licensing process. This report examines: (1) the basis for DoE's decision to terminate the Yucca Mountain program; (2) the termination steps DoE has taken and their effects; (3) the major impacts if the repository were terminated; and (4) the principal lessons learned. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand report.

Book Safety Evaluation Report Related to Disposal of High level Radioactive Wastes in a Geologic Repository at Yucca Mountain Nevada Volume 1

Download or read book Safety Evaluation Report Related to Disposal of High level Radioactive Wastes in a Geologic Repository at Yucca Mountain Nevada Volume 1 written by U.s. Nuclear Regulation Comion and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is one of five volumes shown in the table below that comprise the Safety Evaluation Report (SER). Each volume is to be published separately as it is completed; however, the volume number may not be published in sequence (e.g., Volume 3 is anticipated to be published before Volume 2). The SER volume number and section number of chapters within a volume, are based on the Yucca Mountain Review Plan (YMRP)1 that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff used to guide its review of the license application. Use of SER section numbers that correspond to the YMRP section numbers facilitated the NRC staff's writing of the SER, allowing the interested reader to easily find the applicable review methods and acceptance criteria within the YMRP. The following table provides the topics and SER sections for each volume. The table will help the reader locate SER section cross-references in each volume.

Book Nuclear Wastes

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1996-02-23
  • ISBN : 0309052262
  • Pages : 590 pages

Download or read book Nuclear Wastes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-02-23 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disposal of radioactive waste from nuclear weapons production and power generation has caused public outcry and political consternation. Nuclear Wastes presents a critical review of some waste management and disposal alternatives to the current national policy of direct disposal of light water reactor spent fuel. The book offers clearcut conclusions for what the nation should do today and what solutions should be explored for tomorrow. The committee examines the currently used "once-through" fuel cycle versus different alternatives of separations and transmutation technology systems, by which hazardous radionuclides are converted to nuclides that are either stable or radioactive with short half-lives. The volume provides detailed findings and conclusions about the status and feasibility of plutonium extraction and more advanced separations technologies, as well as three principal transmutation concepts for commercial reactor spent fuel. The book discusses nuclear proliferation; the U.S. nuclear regulatory structure; issues of health, safety and transportation; the proposed sale of electrical energy as a means of paying for the transmutation system; and other key issues.
