Book excerpt: An experimental and numerical effort was undertaken to assess the effects of a cold gas (To=300K) nozzle plume impinging on a simulated spacecraft surface. The nozzle flow impingement is investigated experimentally using a nano-Newton resolution force balance and numerically using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) numerical technique. The Reynolds number range investigated in this study is from 0.5 to approximately 900 using helium and nitrogen propellants. The thrust produced by the nozzle was first assessed on a force balance to provide a baseline case. Subsequently, an aluminum plate was attached to the same force balance at various angles from 0? (parallel to the plume flow) to 10?. For low Reynolds number helium flow, a 16.5% decrease in thrust was measured for the plate at 0? relative to the free plume expansion case. For low Reynolds number nitrogen flow, the difference was found to be 12%. The thrust degradation was found to decrease at higher Reynolds numbers and larger plate angles. The roughness of the simulated spacecraft surface will be a variable in the testing to be performed for this manuscript.

Book excerpt: For the past several years, Advatech Pacific has been maintaining and enhancing the COLISEUM plume simulation environment under the direction of AFRL/PRSS. COLISEUM is a software environment used to model the propagation of a plasma plume and its interactions with solid surfaces (including both sputtering and re-deposition). A recent addition to the capabilities of COLISEUM is its integration with ModelCenter, the optimization and integration framework developed by Phoenix Integration. With the help of ModelCenter, the thrust directions of four Hall Effect Thrusters (HETs) for a representative satellite geometry are optimized such that the overall sputtering on the solar panels is minimized, subject to performance constraints on the overall thrust and torque. The satellite is assumed to be in a geosynchronous orbit, with the solar panels always facing the sun. Different positions in the satellite's orbit are considered, as is a case where one thruster is disabled. All cases considered showed smooth convergence behavior, and sputtering on the solar panels could be reduced significantly while meeting all performance constraints.

These aspects are all addressed in various formal protocols for creating and maintaining airworthiness, including damage tolerance considerations. In most transport aircraft, fatigue occurs in lap joints, sometimes leading to circumstances that threaten safety in critical ways. The problem of fatigue of lap joints has been considerably enlarged by the goal of extending aircraft lifetimes. Fatigue of riveted lap joints between aluminium alloy sheets, typical of the pressurized aircraft fuselage, is the major topic of the present book. Offering a systematic introduction to the physical theory of vortical flows at graduate level, it considers the theory of vortical flows as a branch of fluid dynamics focusing on shearing process in fluid motion, measured by vorticity. It studies vortical flows according to their natural evolution stages,from being generated to dissipated. As preparation, the first three chapters of the book provide background knowledge for entering vortical flows. The rest of the book deals with vortices and vortical flows, following their natural evolution stages. Of various vortices the primary form is layer-like vortices or shear layers, and secondary but stronger form is axial vortices mainly formed by the rolling up of shear layers. Problems are given at the end of each chapter and Appendix, some for helping understanding the basic theories, and some involving specific applications; but the emphasis of both is always on physical thinking.
