Book SECOND GENERATION ADVANCED REBURNING FOR HIGH EFFICIENCY NOx CONTROL

Download or read book SECOND GENERATION ADVANCED REBURNING FOR HIGH EFFICIENCY NOx CONTROL written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project is designed to develop a family of novel NO(subscript x) control technologies, called Second Generation Advanced Reburning which has the potential to achieve 90+% NO(subscript x) control in coal fired boilers at a significantly lower cost than SCR. The third reporting period in Phase II (April 1--June 30, 1998) included experimental activities at pilot scale and comparison of the results with full-scale data. The pilot scale tests were performed with the objective of simulating furnace conditions of ongoing full-scale tests at the Greenidge boiler No. 6 owned and operated by NYSEG and defining the processes controlling AR performance to subsequently improve the performance. The tests were conducted in EER' s Boiler Simulator Facility. The main fuel pulsing system was used at the BSF to control the degree of unmixedness, thus providing control over furnace gas O2 and CO concentrations. Results on AR-Lean, presented in the previous quarterly report, were compared with full-scale data. Performance of reburn+SNCR was tested to predict NO(subscript x) control at Greenidge. The results of the BSF reburn+SNCR simulation tests demonstrated that there are synergistic advantages of using these two technologies in series. In particular, injection of overfire air provides additional mixing that reduces negative effects on AR performance at the temperature regime of the Greenidge boiler.

Book Advanced In Furnace NOx Control for Wall and Cyclone Fired Boilers

Download or read book Advanced In Furnace NOx Control for Wall and Cyclone Fired Boilers written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NOx minimization strategy for coal-burning wall-fired and cyclone boilers was developed that included deep air staging, innovative oxygen use, reburning, and advanced combustion control enhancements. Computational fluid dynamics modeling was applied to refine and select the best arrangements. Pilot-scale tests were conducted by firing an eastern high-volatile bituminous Pittsburgh No. 8 coal at 5 million Btu/hr in a facility that was set up with two-level overfire air (OFA) ports. In the wall-fired mode, pulverized coal was burned in a geometrically scaled down version of the B and W DRB-4Z{reg_sign} low-NOx burner. At a fixed overall excess air level of 17%, NOx emissions with single-level OFA ports were around 0.32 lb/million Btu at 0.80 burner stoichiometry. Two-level OFA operation lowered the NOx levels to 0.25 lb/million Btu. Oxygen enrichment in the staged burner reduced the NOx values to 0.21 lb/million Btu. Oxygen enrichment plus reburning and 2-level OFA operation further curbed the NOx emissions to 0.19 lb/million Btu or by 41% from conventional air-staged operation with single-level OFA ports. In the cyclone firing arrangement, oxygen enrichment of the cyclone combustor enabled high-temperature and deeply staged operation while maintaining good slag tapping. Firing the Pittsburgh No. 8 coal in the optimum arrangement generated 112 ppmv NOx (0.15 lb/million Btu) and 59 ppmv CO. The optimum emissions results represent 88% NOx reduction from the uncontrolled operation. Levelized costs for additional NOx removal by various in-furnace control methods in reference wall-fired or cyclone-fired units already equipped with single-level OFA ports were estimated and compared with figures for SCR systems achieving 0.1 lb NOx/106 Btu. Two-level OFA ports could offer the most economical approach for moderate NOx control, especially for smaller units. O2 enrichment in combination with 2-level OFA was not cost effective for wall-firing. For cyclone units, NOx removal by two-level OFA plus O2 enrichment but without coal reburning was economically attractive.

Book Modeling and Simulation of SOx and NOx Reduction Processes in Pulverized Coal Furnaces

Download or read book Modeling and Simulation of SOx and NOx Reduction Processes in Pulverized Coal Furnaces written by and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2003-12-18 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT The current work briefly reviews the formation mechanisms and reduction approaches of the pollutants SOx and NOx in coal combustion and focuses on the simulation of the lower-cost in-furnace measures ƒ{ the dry additive process (DAP) for SOx reduction and the reburning as well as the advanced reburning (hybrid reburning/SNCR) techniques for NOx reduction. In addition, the influence of sulfur compounds on NOx formation is investigated. The major workings include: Simulation of the dry additive desulfurization process (DAP): Different models ƒ{ shrinking core model (SCM), pore model (PM) and grain model (GM) ƒ{ are implemented to describe the gas-particle reaction. Relevant processes such as the sintering of the additive, the self-retention by coal ash, the thermal equilibrium of the sulfation reaction are accounted for and modeled. A comprehensive model for the DAP with calcium based additives is subsequently established and integrated into a combustion CFD (computational fluid dynamics) code AIOLOS, in both Eulerian and Lagrangian schemes. The model is verified with experiments on a test reactor. Mechanism reduction and simulation of reburning/SNCR Processes: A method for reduction of kinetic mechanisms is introduced. A program tool is developed for automatic reduction of detailed reaction mechanisms. Reduced mechanisms for reburning and hybrid reburning/SNCR processes are developed and implemented into the CFD code. CFD-calculations with the reduced mechanisms are performed and compared with experimental measurements to comprehensively evaluate the simulation approach. It is shown that the detailed simulation is capable of modeling the complex reburning and SNCR processes with acceptable computing time and achieves reasonable results in wide parameter ranges. Study of the influence of sulfur compounds on NOx formation: The effect of SO2 on NOx formation is experimentally investigated and analysed with kinetic mechanisms. It is indicated that the presence of SO2 inhabits the NOx formation and reduce the NOx emissions in normal air-rich combustion. Under air-staging conditions, SO2 addition has no obvious influence on the final NOx emissions.

Book An Investigation to Define the Physical chemical Constraints which Limit NO Sub X Emission Reduction Achievable by Reburning

Download or read book An Investigation to Define the Physical chemical Constraints which Limit NO Sub X Emission Reduction Achievable by Reburning written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reburning is a NOx control technology which uses fuel to reduce NO. Thus, the main heat release zone can be operated normally to achieve optimum combustion conditions without regard for NOx control. Objectives of this program are to define the physical and/or chemical constraints which prevent realization of Point 5 (85% NOx reduction) with reburning, to use this information to identify and test improved configurations for reburning as an NOx control technique on coal-fired boilers, and to test various methods which could be used in practice to reduce NOx during the burnout step of the reburning process. The program will be performed at two experimental scales. Bench scale studies will be carried out in a 100 × 103 Btu/hr tunnel furnace to evaluate the importance of chemical and physical constraints in the absence of mixing limitations. A 10 × 106 Btu/hr pilot scale facility will subsequently be used to investigate the impacts of finite rate mixing and determine methods of minimizing them. A series of experiments will be conducted to verify the various concepts and demonstrate the optimum configuration for an advanced reburning process to achieve 85% NOx reduction at a cost lower than SCR. 24 figs.
