Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now for the first time ever in one volume, all twenty-eight stories and two serialized novels starring the Continental Op—one of the greatest characters in storied history of detective fiction. Dashiell Hammett is the father of modern hard-boiled detective stories. His legendary works have been lauded for almost one hundred years by fans, and his novel The Maltese Falcon was adapted into a classic film starring Humphrey Bogart. One of Dashiell Hammett's most memorable characters, the Continental Op made his debut in Black Mask magazine on October 1, 1923, narrating the first of twenty-eight stories and two novels that would change forever the face of detective fiction. The Op is a tough, wry, unglamorous gumshoe who has inspired a following that is both global and enduring. He has been published in periodicals, paperback digests, and short story collections, but until now, he has never, in all his ninety-two years, had the whole of his exploits contained in one book. The book features all twenty-eight of the original standalone Continental Op stories, the original serialized versions of Red Harvest and The Dain Curse, and previously unpublished material. This anthology of Continental Op stories is the only complete, one-volume work of its kind.

Book Why Can t You Shut Up

Download or read book Why Can t You Shut Up written by Anthony Wolf and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You forgot to buy milk!” “You never said anything about milk.” “Yes, I definitely did. You never listen.” “I do too listen. You never said milk.” “No, I did say milk. You just don’t listen.” We’ve all been in situations like this one–when a loved one unintentionally provokes a confrontation. What do we do? We stand our ground, push our point, and underscore our reasons. We do it because we know we’re right. What is it, deep inside our being, that refuses to budge, to give in, or to shut up before we’re embroiled in a fight we don’t want? Meet your baby self. According to Dr. Anthony Wolf, this childish personality comes out at home, at work, and in social settings–with spouses, significant others, colleagues, and even friends. The baby self doesn’t know when to back down, it doesn’t compromise, and it can lead you to make rash and, usually, wrong decisions. In this humorous, helpful, and eye-opening guide, you’ll learn how to deal with your baby self when it wreaks havoc on your life. Dr. Wolf provides alternate ways of responding to others when your baby self is ready to scream: It’s not fair! It’s not my fault! You are wrong! He offers ways to avoid the traps that sabotage all relationships, helps us recognize the false reasons we trick ourselves into thinking we are right, and teaches us how to let our mature side do the talking. With scores of examples of how innocent day-to-day conversations can erupt into conflagrations, Dr. Wolf shows you how to disengage fast and easily. The result? Peace, positive dialogue, and happier relationships all around–even if deep down you know you are right!

Book excerpt: “One New Year’s Eve, four people with very different reasons but a common purpose find their way to the top of a fifteen-story building in London. None of them has calculated that, on a date humans favor for acts of significance, in a place known as a local suicide-jumpers’ favorite, they might encounter company. A Long Way Down is the story of what happens next, and of what doesn’t.” —The New York Times Book Review A wise, affecting novel from the beloved, award-winning author of Dickens and Prince, Funny Girl and High Fidelity Nick Hornby mines the hearts and psyches of four lost souls who connect just when they’ve reached the end of the line. In four distinct and riveting first-person voices, Hornby tells a story of four individuals confronting the limits of choice, circumstance, and their own mortality. This is a tale of connections made and missed, punishing regrets, and the grace of second chances.

In this enemies-to-lovers romance, Slye agent Ryder Van Dyke is locked inside an Atlanta penitentiary facing the death penalty after being framed for murder. When his last hope for freedom disintegrates, he’s offered a commuted sentence – if he helps the FBI nail a bigger criminal, his father. Only Van Dyke family is allowed inside his father’s compound. To prove his innocence or tap his Special Forces skills to disappear if he can’t, Ryder accepts a deal to take an agent inside his father’s home as his wife. FBI analyst Bianca Brady spent two long years substantiating that the head of Van Dyke Enterprises is guilty of funneling weapons to terrorists. Now all she needs is the proof, but she hadn’t expected to marry a criminal who hates her after her team gathered the evidence to put Ryder in prison. Bianca is the last person Ryder will trust, but he’ll take any gamble to avoid life in a cage. While the unlikely pair navigates a minefield of deadly secrets and assassination attempts, as well as unexpected chemistry, they set off a series of attacks neither anticipated. When it’s clear Bianca is the killer’s target, Ryder is forced to make a choice to give up his freedom or risk the life of the woman who’s stolen his heart. Bianca and Ryder dodge bullets and race against the clock to unmask a terrorist who can prove Ryder’s innocence and stop him before he can kill again, but at a sacrifice neither saw coming. “Be sure to take a deep breath before you dive into a Slye Team novel - prepare for shocks, thrills and above all a fantastic read you won't want to ever end.” ~~ Fresh Fiction
