Book Representing Black Music Culture

Download or read book Representing Black Music Culture written by Bill Banfield and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2011-10-07 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of essays, interviews, and profiles, William Banfield reflects on his life as a musician and educator, as he weaves together pieces of cultural criticism and artistry, all the while paying homage to Black music of the last 40 years and beyond. In Representing Black Music Culture: Then, Now, and When Again?, Banfield honors the legacy of artists who have graced us with their work for more than half a century. The essays and interviews in this collection are enhanced by seven years of daily diary entries, which reflect on some of the country's most respected Black composers, recording artists, authors, and cultural icons. These include Ornette Coleman, Bobby McFerrin, Toni Morrison, Amiri Baraka, Gordon Parks, the Marsalis brothers, Spike Lee, Maya Angelou, Patrice Rushen, and many others. Though many of the individuals Banfield lauds are well-known to most readers, he also turns his attention to musicians and artists whose work, while perhaps unheralded by the world at large, are no less deserving of praise and respect for their contributions to the culture. In addition, this volume is filled with candid photographs of many of these fellow artists as they participate in expressive culture, whether on stage, on tour, in clubs, behind the scenes, in rehearsal, or even during meals and teaching class. This unique book of essays, interviews, diary entries, and Banfield's personal photographs will be of interest to scholars and students, of course, but also to general readers interested in absorbing and appreciating the beauty of Black culture.

Download or read book Now and Then Again written by Joseph Mirsky and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging compilation of jewelry store newsletter articles about consumer and middle class issues, food, drink, money, economics, politics, and the lighter side of life, as well as jewelry. Many articles about the past are eerily resonant today, hence the title: an 1899 prediction that the Chinese will mass produce goods "not for their own use, but for us and at such ruinous prices that the labor market of the world will suffer a terrible blow," (Made in China), virtually identical ads for cure-alls in 1903 and 2012 (Snake Oil). The economy was stupid in 1896, too: "Leak Through Economics" is from Bryan's Cross of Gold speech. That corrupting new music is old, shown by quotes about the waltz in 1813, ragtime in 1902, Stravinsky in 1913, swing in 1936, rock and roll in 1957, and Keith Richards dissing hip-hop in 2007 (All Shook Up). The Great Recession got you depressed? Read about the Panic of 33 in ancient Rome (Oeconomia est, O Asine!). While in Rome, go down to Pompeii and read the Graffiti on the walls: "Chie, I hope your hemorrhoids rub together so much that they hurt worse than when they ever have before!" (The Handwriting on the Wall). Some of the diverse topics in the book are an elephant who didn't get a peanut because it was paid for with a lead slug flattening the offender with a stream of water (Never Cheat an Elephant), the rise of the Christmas tree and decline of the Christmas stocking (O Weinachtsbaum), counterfeiters who printed money while in prison in 1899 (Passing the Buck), airline barf bags with ads on them (Ad Nauseum), and an article about a 1927 robot who answered the phone and who, when asked his favorite book at a booksellers convention, replied "Is Sex Necessary?" by James Thurber (Is Sex Necessary?). The article is accompanied by a wonderful photo of a woman hugging the protesting robot. The book is like a newspaper: you don't have to read it sequentially, so you won't get bored. You can read what interests you.

Book The Art of Time in Memoir

Download or read book The Art of Time in Memoir written by Sven Birkerts and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art Of series is a new line of books reinvigorating the practice of craft and criticism. Each book will be a brief, witty, and useful exploration of fiction, nonfiction, or poetry by a writer impassioned by a singular craft issue. The Art Of volumes will provide a series of sustained examinations of key but sometimes neglected aspects of creative writing by some of contemporary literature's finest practioners. In The Art of Time in Memoir, critic and memoirist Sven Birkerts examines the human impulse to write about the self. By examining memoirs such as Vladimir Nabokov's Speak, Memory; Virginia Woolf's unfinished A Sketch of the Past; and Mary Karr's The Liars' Club, Birkerts describes the memoirist's essential art of assembling patterns of meaning, stirring to life our own sense of past and present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving to America turns H&à's life inside out. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. H&à and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, H&à discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food, the strange shape of its landscape, and the strength of her very own family. Book Contemporary Physics Plays

Download or read book Contemporary Physics Plays written by Jenni G. Halpin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes recent physics plays, arguing that their enaction of concepts from the sciences they discuss alters the nature of the decisions made by the characters, changing the ethical judgements that might be cast on them. Recent physics plays regularly alter the shape of space-time itself, drawing together disparate moments, reversing the flow of time, creating apparent contradictions, and iterating scenes for multiple branches of counterfactual history. With these changes both causality and responsibility shift, variously. The roles of iconic scientists, such as Albert Einstein and Werner Heisenberg, are interrogated for their dramatic value, placing history and dramatic license in tension. Cold War strategies and the limits of espionage highlight the emphatically personal involvement of ordinary individuals. This study is vital reading for those interested in physics plays and the relationship between the sciences and the humanities.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Virginia Woolf
  • Publisher : Good Press
  • Release : 2023-12-16

  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Mrs Dalloway written by Virginia Woolf and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-16 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mrs Dalloway, Virginia Woolf's fourth novel, offers the reader an impression of a single June day in London in 1923. Clarissa Dalloway, the wife of a Conservative member of parliament, is preparing to give an evening party, while the shell-shocked Septimus Warren Smith hears the birds in Regent's Park chattering in Greek. There seems to be nothing, except perhaps London, to link Clarissa and Septimus. She is middle-aged and prosperous, with a sheltered happy life behind her; Smith is young, poor, and driven to hatred of himself and the whole human race. Yet both share a terror of existence, and sense the pull of death. The world of Mrs Dalloway is evoked in Woolf's famous stream of consciousness style, in a lyrical and haunting language which has made this, from its publication in 1925, one of her most popular novels.
