Book excerpt: When duty calls, wedded Military Intelligence Science Agents Jules Santros and 'Manda Mooney have no choice but to accept knowing that they may be the only ones standing between the Terran Consortium and its total destruction. At least those were the stakes in previous missions. This time, however, they face a different kind of challenge. A sociological/political threat promoted by a madman intent on reviving a deadly ideology from the past, one so toxic, that it cost the lives of millions in centuries past. To prevent a repetition of such a tragedy, of the total breakdown of Terran society, Jules and 'Manda risk their lives as they follow twin trails from Earth to the edge of known space to stop the new plague from engulfing mankind.

Book Souls under Siege

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicole Archambeau
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2021-04-15
  • ISBN : 1501753673
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Souls under Siege written by Nicole Archambeau and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Souls under Siege, Nicole Archambeau explores how the inhabitants of southern France made sense of the ravages of successive waves of plague, the depredations of mercenary warfare, and the violence of royal succession during the fourteenth century. Many people, she finds, understood both plague and war as the symptoms of spiritual sicknesses caused by excessive sin, and they sought cures in confession. Archambeau draws on a rich evidentiary base of sixty-eight narrative testimonials from the canonization inquest for Countess Delphine de Puimichel, which was held in the market town of Apt in 1363. Each witness in the proceedings had lived through the outbreaks of plague in 1348 and 1361, as well as the violence inflicted by mercenaries unemployed during truces in the Hundred Years' War. Consequently, their testimonies unexpectedly reveal the importance of faith and the role of affect in the healing of body and soul alike. Faced with an unprecedented cascade of crises, the inhabitants of Provence relied on saints and healers, their worldview connecting earthly disease and disaster to the struggle for their eternal souls. Souls under Siege illustrates how medieval people approached sickness and uncertainty by using a variety of remedies, making clear that "healing" had multiple overlapping meanings in this historical moment.

Book The Arminian Confession of 1621

Download or read book The Arminian Confession of 1621 written by Mark A. Ellis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1621, two years after their hopes for free and open debate were dashed at the Synod of Dort, the colleagues and students of Jacobus Arminius published the 'Confession or Declaration of the Pastors, which in the Belgian Federation are called the Remonstrants, on the principle articles of the Christian Religion.' The first and perhaps most important of Arminian confessions, written by Simon Episcopius (Arminius' successor at the University of Leiden and leader of the Remonstrant party at Dort) and then approved at a gathering of Remonstrant pastors, provided not only a defense of the Òfive pointsÓ condemned at Dort, but also a succinct declaration of the entire range of their theology. This fresh, unabridged translation of the Confession, the first since 1676, together with the original Latin, allows the contemporary reader to interface directly with theology of the original Remonstrant leaders without the intervening interpretations of either their opponents or later admirers.
