Book Philo of Alexandria An Exegete for His Time

Download or read book Philo of Alexandria An Exegete for His Time written by Peder Borgen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-09 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philo's writings are a comprehensive and important source of late Second Temple Judaism. This volume gives important insights into his exegetical works. The structure of the books and their exegetical ideas are seen here as being closely connected and his writings are analysed against the background of the history, variety and outlook of Alexandrian Jewry. Philo's exegesis is a meeting place between Jewish and Greek notions and ideas; tensions are reflected, such as those between particularism and universalism, between specific biblical and historical earthly events and general macro- and micro-cosmic principles, and between heavenly ascents and interpreted history and eschatology. In addition, glimpses are gained of community life in a Hellenistic Jewish community, especially of issues on the borderline between Jews and their non-Jewish surroundings. New Testament material illuminates Philo's broader Jewish context, and in turn Philo throws light on New Testament backgrounds.

Book Paul s Letter Collection

Download or read book Paul s Letter Collection written by David Trobisch and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fascinating book David Trobisch looks at the Pauline letters of the New Testament by examining the oldest manuscripts of the letters of Paul. Then he describes characteristic features of the Pauline letters and interprets them in the light of documented editorial practices by comparing them to other published letter collections of the time (Cicero, Plinius etc). He comes to the conclusion that the New Testament collection of Pauline letters is best understood if one assumes that the Apostle Paul himself prepared some of them for publication (Romans, I & II Corinthians and Galatians). It is written in accessible language for anyone interested in New Testament scholarship. With footnotes, tables, and illustrations.

Schmidt and published by disserta Verlag. This book was released on 2017-02-25 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Konstantin von Tischendorf discovered what became known as the Codex Sinaiticus in St. Catherine’s Monastery at Mount Sinai (Egypt) in 1844. This ancient manuscript dates back to the 4th century and includes large portions of the Old Testament in Greek and the entire Greek New Testament text. Due to ist age, this ancient Greek New Testament text is one of the oldest and therefore also most authentic Greek New Testament manuscripts available but rarely available in printed form to a public audience today. This edition presents the entire accented Greek text of the New Testament transcribed from the original manuscript in uncial Greek letters and an exhaustive word concordance of the entire text body (corpus) for ease of reference.

Book Matthew s New David at the End of Exile

Download or read book Matthew s New David at the End of Exile written by Nicholas G. Piotrowski and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew crowds more Old Testament quotations and allusions into the prologue than anywhere else in his gospel. In this volume, Nicholas G. Piotrowski demonstrates the narratological and rhetorical effects of such frontloading. Particularly, seven formula-quotations constellate to establish a redemptive-historical setting inside of which the rest of the narrative operates. This setting is defined by Old Testament expectations for David’s great son to end Israel’s exile and rule the nations. Piotrowski contends that the rhetorical effect of this intertextual storytelling was to provide the Matthean community with an identity—in a contentious atmosphere—in terms of God’s historical design for the ages, now fulfilled in Jesus and his followers.
