Book Narratives of New Netherland

Download or read book Narratives of New Netherland written by John Franklin Jameson and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narratives of New Netherland reads like a small anthology on the discovery, origins, and history of the United States, but from a Dutch, rather than traditional English, perspective. A collection of excerpts from works spanning the years 1609 to 1664, a historical picture is painted through books, letters, journal entries, and commentaries. Works focus on Henry Hudson's voyage across the Atlantic and down the Hudson River, as well as on settlers' experiences in the New World. Readers with an interest in American History will be reminded of similar stories from English settlers first experiencing the east coast. John Franklin Jameson was born in Somerville, Massachusetts in 1859. He attended Amherst College, where he graduated valedictorian and studied with several influential historians, as well as John Hopkins University, where he received the first doctorate ever awarded in the field of history in 1882. Jameson went on to become a history teacher, author, journalist and editor. He was the first professional historian to become president of the AHA, and had much influence on historians in the early 20th century. In 1928, he became the head of the Division of Manuscripts at the Library of Congress. Jameson died in 1937.

Book excerpt: The word ""Flemish"" refers to the people living in the North of Belgium and France and the South of the Netherlands. The Flemish, also called ""Flemings,"" are of Germanic (Frank) origin. When the Franks invaded what is now Belgium, they settled between the sea and the ""charcoal forest,"" a dense old-growth forest of beech and oak, which extended to the Rhine and formed a natural boundary during the Late Iron Age through Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. The county of Flanders was created 864 when the French king Charles the Bald granted it as a fief to his son-in-law Baldwin with the Iron Arm. Flanders was a part of France but distinguished itself from the rest of the country with its Germanic Flemish population and close economic ties to England. Unlike other French fiefs it was never returned to the French king's control, instead Flanders became a part of the duke of Burgundy's possessions in 1384, which would evolve into present day Belgium.

Book The Dutch Munsee Encounter in America

Download or read book The Dutch Munsee Encounter in America written by Paul Otto and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing a frontier framework, this book traces intercultural relations in the lower Hudson River valley of early seventeenth-century New Netherland. It explores the interaction between the Dutch and the Munsee Indians and considers how they, and individuals within each group, interacted, focusing in particular on how the changing colonial landscape affected their cultural encounter and Munsee cultural development. At each stage of European colonization - first contact, trade, and settlement - the Munsees faced evolving and changing challenges. Understanding culture in terms of worldview and societal structures, this volume identifies ways in which Munsee society changed in an effort to adjust to the new intercultural relations and looks at the ways the Munsees maintained aspects of their own culture and resisted any imposition of Dutch societal structures and sovereignty over them. In addition, the book includes a suggestive afterword in which the author applies his frontier framework to Dutch-indigenous relations in the Cape colony.
