Unbeknownst to the two, they are the children of the same father. Eventually Cecilia gives in to Leonardo's advances; she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby girl. When Leonardo, who gets bored with Cecilia after a while, agrees to marry a white upper class woman, Cecilia vows revenge. A mulatto friend and suitor of hers kills Leonardo, and Cecilia is thrown into prison as an accessory to the crime. For the contemporary reader Helen Lane's masterful translation of Cecilia Valdés opens a new window into the intricate problems of race relations in Cuba and the Caribbean. There are the elite social circles of European and New World Whites, the rich culture of the free people of color, the class to which Cecilia herself belonged, and then the slaves, divided among themselves between those who were born in Africa and those who were born in the New World, and those who worked on the sugar plantation and those who worked in the households of the rich people in Havana. Cecilia Valdés thus presents a vast portrait of sexual, social, and racial oppression, and the lived experience of Spanish colonialism in Cuba.

It deals with the corruption that had worked its way into the church and governing authorities over the centuries. The title, Latin for “touch me not,” is a reference to the passage in the Gospel of John, where the resurrected Jesus tells Mary Magdalene not to cling to him. It also refers to types of cancer sores that are very painful and irritated by touch, serving as a metaphor for the state of Philippine society that Rizal perceived. Crisóstomo Ibarra returns from Europe after years of study, shortly after the death of his father. He plans to marry his childhood sweetheart, María Clara, and to open a school in his hometown. Crisóstomo is a hopeful idealist, believing that the Filipinos can improve their situation if given a proper education. But a friend warns him that he will make enemies by undertaking such a project—and in fact, he already has enemies. Soon past secrets emerge, and Crisóstomo must deal with unnamed forces working against him. Together with its sequel, El Filibusterismo, Noli Me Tangere indirectly influenced Philippine revolutionary sentiment to such an extent that Rizal was exiled and subsequently executed by the Spanish government. Both novels were long banned in the Philippines, but today are required reading for students, with Rizal considered a national hero. In this study, Dr Jantzen discusses how men of power defined and controlled who should count as a mystic, and thus who would have power: women were pointedly excluded. This makes her book of special interest to those in gender studies and medieval history. Its main argument, however, is philosophical. Because the mystical has gone through many social constructions, the modern philosophical assumption that mysticism is essentially about intense subjective experiences is misguided. This view is historically inaccurate, and perpetuates the same gendered struggle for authority which characterises the history of western christendom. This book is the first on the subject to take issues of gender seriously, and to use these as a point of entry for a deconstructive approach to Christian mysticism.

Book excerpt: Between 1750 and 1850 Spanish American politics underwent a dramatic cultural shift as monarchist colonies gave way to independent states based at least nominally on popular sovereignty and republican citizenship. In The Time of Liberty, Peter Guardino explores the participation of subalterns in this grand transformation. He focuses on Mexico, comparing local politics in two parts of Oaxaca: the mestizo, urban Oaxaca City and the rural villages of nearby Villa Alta, where the population was mostly indigenous. Guardino challenges traditional assumptions that poverty and isolation alienated rural peasants from the political process. He shows that peasants and other subalterns were conscious and complex actors in political and ideological struggles and that popular politics played an important role in national politics in the first half of the nineteenth century. Guardino makes extensive use of archival materials, including judicial transcripts and newspaper accounts, to illuminate the dramatic contrasts between the local politics of the city and of the countryside, describing in detail how both sets of citizens spoke and acted politically. He contends that although it was the elites who initiated the national change to republicanism, the transition took root only when engaged by subalterns. He convincingly argues that various aspects of the new political paradigms found adherents among even some of the most isolated segments of society and that any subsequent failure of electoral politics was due to an absence of pluralism rather than a lack of widespread political participation.

Reflections on Baroque demonstrates that the Baroque impulse lives on in the twenty-first century imagination.
