Book excerpt: Higher frequency radiation sources and their detectors have many potential uses--especially if they are compact, variable, efficient and have high brightness. We discuss some possibilities together with various impediments to their realization. The differences between bound and free electrons are studied from the standpoint of the frequencies that are practicably achievable. With the ansatz that the transport physics with Maxwell's Equations are valid but modified by the material properties, a number of analogs exist between these two basic sources of radiation. In many cases, the differences are between macro and micro implementations e.g. between klystrons and klystrinos (micro or nano) or solid state and semiconductor lasers or rare-earth doped transistors. Cases with no apparent analogs are ones due to unique quantum effects e.g. radiation at 3 kT{sub c} in superconductors. This is well above magnetic resonance imaging MRI around 0.4 meV but well below room temperature at 25 meV. Bound and free possibilities for planar, micro undulators over this range are studied using FDTD techniques. To our knowledge, there have been no implementations of either possibility.

Book excerpt: Energetic electromagnetic radiation finds frequent uses in science (e. g. , for expe riments in nuclear and elementary - particle physics), in technology (for materials testing), and in medicine (for medical X-rays). The most common method of genera ting such radiation is via the process of "bremsstrahlung" (a German term coined by A. Sommerfeld, meaning "braking radiation") in which a beam of electrons is direc ted into matter (e. g. , a metal target), losing energy during its collisions with the atoms and releasing this energy in the form of emitted radiation. The character of such radiation may be drastically changed by the use of a tar get with periodic structure (most commonly, a crystal target). The coherent waves emitted from individual crystal atoms interfere with each other, monochromatizing and polarizing the radiation and often increasing its intensity manifold, thereby creating a powerful radiation source of high quality for purposes of scientific and technical applications. This is true both for the well - established "coherent bremsstrahlung" process in which the interfering radiation is emitted while the electrons cross a succession of crystal planes, as well as for the more recently discovered process of "channeling radiation" (generating radiation of even higher intensity, but lower energy) in which the radiation is emitted while the electrons propagate along a crystal plane, or a crystal axis, in an oscillatory fashion.

Book excerpt: This book discusses possibilities and perspectives for designing and practical realization of novel intensive gamma-ray crystal-based light sources that can be constructed through exposure of oriented crystals—linear, bent and periodically bent, to beams of ultrarelativistic positrons and electrons. The book shows case studies like the tunable light sources based on periodically bent crystals that can be designed with the state-of-the-art beam facilities. A special focus is given to the analysis of generation of the gamma rays because the current technologies based on particle motion in the magnetic field become inefficient or incapable to achieve the desired gamma rays’ intensities. It is demonstrated that the intensity of radiation from crystal-based light sources can be made comparable to or even higher than what is achievable in conventional synchrotrons and undulators operating although in the much lower photon energy range. By exploring the coherence effects, the intensity can be boosted by orders of magnitude. The practical realization of such novel light sources will lead to the significant technological breakthroughs and societal impacts similar to those created earlier by the developments of lasers, synchrotrons and X-rays free-electron lasers. Readers learn about the underlying fundamental physics and familiarize with the theoretical, experimental and technological advances made during last two decades in exploring various features of investigations into crystal-based light sources. This research draws upon knowledge from many research fields, such as material science, beam physics, physics of radiation, solid-state physics and acoustics, to name but a few. The authors provide a useful introduction in this emerging field to a broad readership of researchers and scientists with various backgrounds and, accordingly, make the book as self-contained as possible.

Book excerpt: The development of coherent radiation sources for sub-angstrom wavelengths - i.e. in the hard X-ray and gamma-ray range - is a challenging goal of modern physics. The availability of such sources will have many applications in basic science, technology and medicine and in particular, they may have a revolutionary impact on nuclear and solid state physics, as well as on the life sciences. The present state-of-the-art lasers are capable of emitting electromagnetic radiation from the infrared to the ultraviolet, while free electron lasers (X-FELs) are now entering the soft X-ray region. Moving further, i.e. into the hard X and/or gamma ray band, however, is not possible without new approaches and technologies. In this book we introduce and discuss one such novel approach -the radiation formed in a Crystalline Undulator - whereby electromagnetic radiation is generated by a bunch of ultra-relativistic particles channeling through a periodically bent crystalline structure. Under certain conditions, such a device can emit intensive spontaneous monochromatic radiation and even reach the coherence of laser light sources. Readers will be presented with the underlying fundamental physics and be familiarized with the theoretical, experimental and technological advances made during the last one and a half decades in exploring the various features of investigations into crystalline undulators. This research draws upon knowledge from many research fields - such as materials science, beam physics, the physics of radiation, solid state physics and acoustics, to name but a few. The coherent radiation intensity scales with the square of the number of electron per bunch and its radiation spectrum is determined by the Fourier Transform of the electron bunch distribution squared. At the SUNSHINE (Stanford University Short Intense Electron Source) facility, electron bunches can be generated as short as [sigma]{sub z} = 36 [mu]m (120 femtosecond duration) and such bunches can emit coherent radiation in the far-infrared. Since a typical number for the electron population in a bunch is 108-109, the coherent radiation intensity is much higher than that of incoherent radiation as well as that of a conventional far-infrared radiation source. This concentrates on coherent transition and diffraction radiation from short electron bunches as a potential high intensity far-infrared radiation source and for sub-picosecond electron bunch length measurements. Coherent transition radiation generated from a 25 MeV beam at a vacuum-metal interface is characterized. Such a high intensity radiation source allows far-infrared spectroscopy to be conducted conveniently with a Michelson interferometer and a room temperature detector. Measurements of the refractive index of silicon are described to demonstrate the possibilities of far-infrared spectroscopy using coherent transition radiation Coherent diffraction radiation, which is closely related to coherent transition radiation, can be considered as another potential FIR radiation source. Since the perturbation by the radiation generation to the electron beam is relatively small, it has the advantage of being a nondestructive radiation source.

Book excerpt: The basic principles and design of radiation sources (transition radiation, Cerenkov radiation, radiation from periodic structures, etc.) and radiation-based diagnostics will be discussed, with emphasis on radiation from ultra-short electron bunches. Ultra-short electron bunches have the potential to produce high peak flux radiation sources that cover wavelength regimes where sources are currently not widely available (coherent THz/IR) as well as ultrashort X-ray pulses (3-100 fs). While radiation from the electron bunch contains the full signature of the electron beam and/or medium it has travelled through, the deconvolution of a single property of interest can be difficult due to a large number of contributing properties. The experimental implementation of novel solutions to this problem will be described for beams from 30 MeV to 30 GeV, including fluctuational interferometry, source imaging, phase matched cone angles and laser-based techniques, which utilize optical transition radiation, wiggler and Cerenkov radiation, and Thomson scattering. These novel diagnostic methods have the potential to resolve fs bunch durations, slice emittance on fs scales, etc. The advantages and novel features of these techniques will be discussed.
