Book excerpt: Obesity is a disease of society and economic transition spreading at an epidemic pace throughout the world. According to the World Health Organization, obesity is defined as an increased or abnormal accumulation of body fat mass to the extent that individual’s health will be negatively affected. Overweight is thus being considered as top at risk condition in the world and it is mandatory to identify the physiopathological causes involved in adipose tissue enlargement and related metabolic and cardiovascular health disorders. This volume provides the most up to date insights into the biology of a complex endocrine organ: the adipose tissue.

Book Novel Insights into the Comorbidities and Mortality in Patients with Diabetes

Download or read book Novel Insights into the Comorbidities and Mortality in Patients with Diabetes written by Sen Li and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-04-19 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes is a metabolic disorder of chronic hyperglycemia that causes numerous complications. The International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization report that approximately 537 million people worldwide have diabetes in 2021, which may increase to 700 million by 2045. Diabetes and its complications significantly lower the quality of life of patients and cause more than 4 million deaths yearly. Diabetes and its complications also increase premature mortality, increasing society's economic burden. Numerous studies reveal that the chronic multisystem injury and dysfunction can be caused by diabetes, including cardiac and cerebral vascular lesions, nephropathy, retinopathy and neuropathy. In addition, diabetes usually co-occurs with other diseases that may have certain risk factors in common. For example, patients with diabetes are more likely to have hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or asthma. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the relationship between diabetes and other potential comorbidities such as hepatitis infection, hearing impairment and periodontal disease. Furthermore, common risk factors contributing to the pathogenesis of diabetes and comorbidities are far from fully understood. Several comorbidities (e.g., cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases) raise the extra chances of death in patients with diabetes, but the association between diabetes and mortality of other diseases, such as endometrial or kidney cancer, is inconsistent. Further research is still needed to reveal the excess mortality associated with diabetic comorbidities.

Book Chronic Kidney Disease Novel Insights into Pathophysiology and Treatment

Download or read book Chronic Kidney Disease Novel Insights into Pathophysiology and Treatment written by Giovanni Palleschi and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-07-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In clinical practice, all physicians have to deal with patients suffering from chronic kidney disease. Large numbers of these patients suffer from mild conditions, but nevertheless, they deserve special attention because inappropriate management may accelerate kidney function deterioration. On the other side, patients affected by end-stage renal disease require replacement therapies and often represent a challenge for clinicians due to their complex pathophysiology. Therefore, an adequate knowledge of the most important clinical and therapeutic aspects of renal failure is an essential requirement for every doctor, especially if we consider the increasing incidence and prevalence of this condition. The book summarises the most important etiopathogenetic and pathophysiologic aspects of chronic kidney disease and focuses the attention on important emerging topics: nutritional and dietary management, renoprotective interventions, new evidence about pathophysiological mechanisms provided by base research, innovations in pharmacological treatment, and strategies to improve patient’s quality of life. Data are reported in clear and concise language, supported by graphics, tables, and pictures that facilitate the comprehension of all the arguments.

Book Novel Targets for Chronic Inflammatory Diseases Focus On Therapeutic Drugs and Natural Compounds volume II

Download or read book Novel Targets for Chronic Inflammatory Diseases Focus On Therapeutic Drugs and Natural Compounds volume II written by Yan Huang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic is part of a series with: Novel Targets for Chronic Inflammatory Diseases: Focus On Therapeutic Drugs and Natural Compounds Chronic inflammation is a component of many disease conditions that affect a large group of individuals worldwide, which is characterized by persistent, low-grade inflammation and is increased in the aging population. It occurs when an initiating stimulus is not removed or if the resolution process is disrupted, resulting in a state of low-grade inflammation. It is acknowledged that chronic inflammatory diseases are involved in cardiovascular diseases, endocrine disease, neurodegenerative disease, hepatic disease, pulmonary disease, gastrointestinal disease, and cancer et al., including but not limited to atherosclerosis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, fibrosis, NAFLD, COPD, inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune disorders(like SLE, RA), which are major causes of death worldwide. Immunity is a physiological function of the human body, which maintains health by destroying and rejecting foreign substances including antigens, damaged cells, and tumors et al. There is a close relationship between inflammation and immunity, whether they are both protective mechanisms against invasion or injury responses. Therefore, the important role of inflammatory and immune responses should be noted, it is necessary to explore novel targets and therapeutic drugs for chronic inflammatory diseases.

The second section reviews the principles and progress of medical genetics and epigenetics related to bone disease, including genome-wide association studies (GWAS), genomic profiling, copy number variation, prospects of gene therapy, pharmacogenomics, genetic testing and counseling, as well as the generation and utilizing of mouse models. The third section details advances in the genetics and molecular biology of bone and joint diseases, both monogenic and polygenic, as well as skeletal dysplasias, and rarer bone disorders. The fourth section highlights the central role of the parathyroids in calcium and skeletal homeostasis by reviewing the molecular genetics of: hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyrodism, endocrine neoplasias, and disorders of the PTH and calcium-sensing receptors. The fifth section details molecular and cellular advances across associated renal disorders such as vitamin D and rickets. Identifies and analyzes the genetic basis of bone disorders in humans and demonstrates the utility of mouse models in furthering the knowledge of mechanisms and evaluation of treatments Demonstrates how the interactions between bone and joint biology, physiology, and genetics have greatly enhanced the understanding of normal bone function as well as the molecular pathogenesis of metabolic bone disorders Summarizes the clinical, genetic, molecular, animal model, molecular pathology, diagnostic, counseling, and treatment aspects of each disorder
