Book excerpt: For fifty years, Hydrosilylation has been one of the most fundamental and elegant methods for the laboratory and industrial synthesis of organosilicon and silicon related compounds. Despite the intensive research and continued interest generated by organosilicon compounds, no comprehensive book incorporating its various aspects has been published this century. The aim of this book is to comprehensively review the advances of hydrosilylation processes since 1990. The survey of the literature published over the last two decades enables the authors to discuss the most recent aspects of hydrosilylation advances (catalytic and synthetic) and to elucidate the reaction mechanism for the given catalyst used and the reaction utilization. New catalytic pathways under optimum conditions necessary for efficient synthesis of organosilicon compounds are presented. This monograph shows the extensive development in the application of hydrosilylation in organic and asymmetric syntheses and in polymer and material science.

Book Exploration of Novel Catalytic Methods

Download or read book Exploration of Novel Catalytic Methods written by Jyot Nandi and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growing demand for green and sustainable chemistry, it is imperative to develop novel catalytic methods that involve mild conditions and less toxic reagents. Described herein, is a new paradigm for oxidation and oxidative functionalization methodologies by harvesting visible-light energy. It consists of a dual catalytic system of an environmentally friendly oxidant, 4-acetoamido-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine N-oxyl (also known as ACT) with photoredox catalysis. The integration of these two forms of catalysis has been realized for the oxidative amidation of aldehydes, furnishing N-acylated heterocycles. Extension of this process to the oxidative amidation of alcohols via the intermediacy of an aldehyde has been successfully pursued in one-pot two-step process, thus offering a general oxidation platform. The applicability of the devised system has been demonstrated for the synthesis of nitriles, amidation of amines, and synthesis of carboxylic acids.

Book New Synthetic Applications of Boronic Acid Catalysis for Alcohol Activation

Download or read book New Synthetic Applications of Boronic Acid Catalysis for Alcohol Activation written by Joshua Yakiwchuk and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic chemistry has its foundations in the 19th century; since, it has grown into a number of industries affecting our daily lives such as the manufacture of goods and life saving pharmaceuticals. The need for new and increasingly efficient synthetic methods has grown in response to the consumerism and industry of the 20th century. Some of the existing methods in synthetic organic chemistry are inefficient processes despite the explosive development over the last 60 years. Currently, there is a search for new, mild and efficient methods to produce common chemical functionality found in many of the goods and drugs used by people every day. Arylboronic acids are a modular and stable class of compounds and may provide an answer to the replacement of some classical synthetic protocols. Boronic acids in general have an affinity for oxygen acting as Lewis acids through alcohol activation. This thesis investigates boronic acids as viable alternatives to classical catalysts and reagents using alcohols, a ubiquitous functional group, as substrates. Elimination of alcohols has been a difficult task in organic chemistry for nearly a century requiring harsh conditions and stoichiometric activating agents. Transformation of an inexpensive alcohol, especially a primary alcohol, to an alkene in a mild and catalytic manner would simplify synthetic chemistry providing an alternative to what are harsh and toxic stoichiometric reactions. Chapter 2 will discuss investigations into the dehydrative elimination of alcohols. Amide bonds are a stable linkage found in all biological systems. Interest in their formation is founded in researching the effect of new peptides and various pharmaceuticals. It is useful to form these linkages in a mild and catalytic manner. Currently, amides are predominately formed by coupling a carboxylic acid with an amine using various coupling reagents and a few catalytic methods; an alternate disconnection such as an alcohol and a nitrile could provide an alternate pathway to synthesize this functionality. The Ritter reaction, an amide formed from an alcohol and a nitrile, lacks wide-spread adoption due to the lack of mild, efficient and general methods. Chapter 3 will discuss an attempt to develop a mild boronic acid catalyzed Ritter reaction. The Friedel-Crafts alkylation is one of the oldest ways of making bonds with aryl compounds but still enjoys widespread use to this day. Unfortunately, despite the advancement over the last decade, the Friedel-Crafts reaction is still plagued by high temperatures, low functional group tolerance and excessive substrate waste. Chapter 4 will discuss the activation of free benzyl alcohols for the formation of diarylmethanes using Friedel-Crafts chemistry and a novel boronic acid catalyst.

Book Applied Cross Coupling Reactions

Download or read book Applied Cross Coupling Reactions written by Yasushi Nishihara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Applied Cross-Coupling Reactions” provides students and teachers of advanced organic chemistry with an overview of the history, mechanisms and applications of cross-coupling reactions. Since the discovery of the transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions in 1972, numerous synthetic uses and industrial applications have been developed. The mechanistic studies of the cross-coupling reactions have disclosed that three fundamental reactions: oxidative addition, transmetalation, and reductive elimination, are involved in a catalytic cycle. Cross-coupling reactions have allowed us to produce a variety of compounds for industrial purposes, such as natural products, pharmaceuticals, liquid crystals and conjugate polymers for use in electronic devices. Indeed, the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2010 was awarded for work on cross-coupling reactions. In this book, the recent trends in cross-coupling reactions are also introduced from the point of view of synthesis design and catalytic activities of transition-metal catalysts.
