Book Novation on the Trinity Letters to Cyprian of Carthage Ethical Treatises

Download or read book Novation on the Trinity Letters to Cyprian of Carthage Ethical Treatises written by Novatianus and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novatian was a priest of Rome in the third century who wrote a commentary on the Rule of Faith, commonly titled, On the Trinity. Although the document is not well known outside of the field of early Christian studies, it made an important contribution to the doctrine of the Trinity in the early Church, and as several scholars have maintained, it helped set the stage for the definition of the faith known as the Nicene Creed. Novatian would eventually find himself at the center of a controversy which led to a schism of the Church, and so his works were relegated to obscurity for centuries. However, in its time, Novatian's On the Trinity was the epitome of Roman theology, and as some have argued, it was even ahead of its time. The present volume contains the complete works of Novatian translated into English, with an introduction and full bibliography of Novatian studies. This new translation takes into account the latest scholarship on Novatian, and brings the documents up to a new level of clarity and readability. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum Series Latina as Novatianus - Opera quae supersunt (CCSL 4), edited by G. F. Diercks. References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation.

Book The Treatise of Novatian on the Trinity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Treatise of Novatian on the Trinity Classic Reprint written by Herbert Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatise of Novatian, on the Trinity As the Church is a great society, it has the right to expel any members who break its rules of conduct or of faith, and also to readmit them on its conditions of repentance and amendment being fulfilled; this power it exercises through its officers, the bishops and priests. Excommunicated persons had long before Novatian's time been so readmitted, at least when at the point of death, and the principle was gradually widened, so that even those who had been grievous sinners, and were in no danger of death, could again enjoy Church privileges; while the power of granting readmission was extended to Confessors - those who had stood firm for Christ during persecution.1 But there always was a strong body of opinion in the Church that grievous Sins, including apostasy from the faith, could not be absolved, but must be left to God's uncovenanted mercies. Book excerpt: In accordance with prophecy, Jesus set up His eternal kingdom. But before long, Satan influenced men to start making changes in the structure of Christ's kingdom, the church. These changes took the form of doctrines, practices, and structures that were foreign to the Bible. The result was a new church-the Catholic Church-in competition with Jesus' kingdom. This book shows the path of the Catholic apostasy, but also shows the groups which still followed the truth-though they were labeled as heretics by the Catholics-the people within Catholicism who tried to bring them more in line with the Bible, and finally, many of the individuals who decided to start fresh by restoring New Testament Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.
