Book New Brunswick a History

Download or read book New Brunswick a History written by W. Stewart MacNutt and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When the American revolutionary war ended, what was to become New Brunswick was almost the last wilderness on the Atlantic seaboard. Into this hinterland flowed thousands of Loyalists whom the war had transformed from the settled and prosperous into the uprooted and dispossessed. The experience made of them a people who, as a condition of survival, had to become cautious and severely practical – and sturdier than ever. The development of the province they made is an absorbing history."--Page 4 of cover.

Book The Spirit of Industry and Improvement

Download or read book The Spirit of Industry and Improvement written by Daniel Samson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2008 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of improvement permeated social and political discourse in colonial Canadian society. From agriculture to building roads and mills to defining correct habits and behaviour, Nova Scotia's improvers embraced the ideals of innovation and progress and promoted modern programs of government. Daniel Samson moves Nova Scotia and rural Canada from the colonial margins to the heart of a modernizing society, showing how the countryside functioned as a centre of change and innovation. He connects a fascinating spectrum of sites, actors, and strategies and links settlement, farm-building, rural market formation, and early industrialization to the heterogeneous strategies of families and state actors, the rural poor, and rural elites. The Spirit of Industry and Improvement presents the first-ever overview of rural colonial Nova Scotia and provides compelling insights into the formation of modern liberal practices of government and self-government in British North America.

Book The Franchise and Politics in British North America 1755 1867

Download or read book The Franchise and Politics in British North America 1755 1867 written by John Garner and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1969-12-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To discuss the history of the franchise in Canada, Mr. Garner had to go back well before Confederation because 1867 did not mark the beginnings of a new franchise. Until 1885 the federal government employed the provincial franchises at each federal election, and the provinces in turn continued for some years the franchises that had served their colonial predecessors. This then is the story of the development of the franchise in each of those British colonies which came to form the nucleus of the Dominion of Canada from the establishment of their representative assemblies until they joined Confederation.
