Book excerpt: The weekend is fast approaching. The couple of days leading up to it are turning strange, with small occurrences that most people will shrug off as they go about their daily routines. That is, until they can no longer ignore them. Mike and his wife, Shelly, are dealing with their teenage children. One is planning to go out shopping and gallivant with her best friend, the other is content with hooking up with his best friend and getting lost all weekend in some otherworldly realm, gaming their life away. Mike and Shelly are trying to plan a quiet weekend around the house, sitting on the front porch, watching their little town come alive every morning, watching life ebb and flow. But the strange occurrences will become more intense with each passing day, until Mike and Shelly find themselves falling further into the very depths of hell. They both will bear witness to many horrific events that will shake them to their cores, leaving them to wonder about the fates of family, friends, and all of humanity.

Book Contemporary British Ceramics and the Influence of Sculpture

Download or read book Contemporary British Ceramics and the Influence of Sculpture written by Laura Gray and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how British contemporary artists who work with clay have managed, in the space of a single generation, to take ceramics from niche-interest craft to the pristine territories of the contemporary art gallery. This development has been accompanied (and perhaps propelled) by the kind of critical discussion usually reserved for the 'higher' discipline of sculpture. Ceramics is now encountering and colliding with sculpture, both formally and intellectually. Laura Gray examines what this means for the old hierarchies between art and craft, the identity of the potter, and the character of a discipline tied to a specific material but wanting to participate in critical discussions that extend far beyond clay.

What are the most pressing problems facing new parents today? As the world has become increasingly more complicated, so has parenting. We are concerned about pervasive toxins in the environment and anxious to raise our children in ways that will protect them as well as safeguard our already fragile world. Manda Aufochs Gillespie, the Green Mama, shares what today’s science and Grandma’s traditional wisdom tell us about prenatal care for mothers-to-be, breastfeeding, detoxifying the nursery, diapering, caring for baby’s skin, feeding a family, and healthy play — redefining the basics of parenting for today’s world. With an upbeat tone, stories of parents who have been there, real-world advice for when money matters more, and practical steps geared toward immediate success, The Green Mama engages and guides even the busiest, most sleep-deprived parent. The Green Mama helps parents become what they were always meant to be: experts on the care of their own children.

Book excerpt: Adults don't talk about the business of doing our business. We work on one assumption: the world of public bathrooms is problem- and politics-free. No Place To Go: Answering the Call of Nature in the Urban Jungle reveals the opposite is true. No Place To Go is a toilet tour from London to San Francisco to Toronto and beyond. From pay potties to deserted alleyways, No Place To Go is a marriage of urbanism, social narrative, and pop culture that shows the ways — momentous and mockable — public bathrooms just don't work. Like, for the homeless, who, faced with no place to go sometimes literally take to the streets. (Ever heard of a municipal poop map?) For people with invisible disabilities, such as Crohn’s disease, who stay home rather than risk soiling themselves on public transit routes. For girls who quit sports teams because they don’t want to run to the edge of the pitch to pee. Celebrities like Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen have protested bathroom bills that will stomp on the rights of transpeople. And where was Hillary Clinton after she arrived back to the stage late after the first commercial break of the live-televised Democratic leadership debate in December 2015? Stuck in a queue for the women’s bathroom. Peel back the layers on public bathrooms and it’s clear many more people want for good access than have it. Public bathroom access is about cities, society, design, movement, and equity. The real question is: Why are public toilets so crappy?

Book Auditory Development in Infancy

Download or read book Auditory Development in Infancy written by Sandra E. Trehub and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small but growing body of information about auditory processes in infancy is a tribute to the ingenuity and persistence of investigators in this realm. Undeter red by the frequent expressions of boredom, rage, and indifference in their subjects, these investigators nevertheless continue to seek answers to the intrigu ing but difficult questions about the course of auditory development. In the spring of 1981, a group of leading scholars and researchers in audi tion gathered to discuss the topic, Auditory Development in Infancy, at the 11th annual psychology symposium at Erindale College, University of Toronto. They came from both sides of the Atlantic and from various disciplines, including audiology, neurology, physics, and psychology. They shared their views on theory and data, as well as their perspectives from the laboratory and clinic. One unexpected bonus was an unusually distinguished audience of researchers and clinicians who contributed to lively discussion within and beyond the formal sessions.

Book Chair City of the World

Download or read book Chair City of the World written by Constance Riley and published by VolumesOfValue. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction - This is the story of more than a century in the life of the Timpany, McConnell, Riley, and LaRoche families against the background of the rise and fall of the chairmaking industry in Gardner, Massachusetts. It is a family and social history of people moving from one country to another, showing who we were and who we became. It is a local history as well, providing a rich picture of Gardner’s everyday life and special moments in time. Gardner, Massachusetts, is located in Worcester County, not far from the New Hampshire border. In 1785, just before the town of Gardner was incorporated, there were sixty families living within what would become its boundaries. Constance (Connie) is the great granddaughter of Albro McConnell who emigrated in 1869 from Nova Scotia to Gardner, Massachusetts, to work in the chair factories. Her grandfather James Timpany emigrated in 1888, worked in the toy and chair shops, and became Mayor of Gardner in 1933. Riley is also a pioneer, earning a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts at age fifty while the mother of eight children. She cofounded the Central Mass. Genealogical Society (CMGS), organized Lucy Stone Commemorative Projects, coordinated Women’s Centers in Gardner and Fitchburg, has been active in the Peace Movement from the Vietnam War to the present, and in itiated the “Magic of Books” Program to distribute free books to low income children. Riley is recognized in Greater Gardner Women Who Made a Difference.

Book excerpt: RYDER: You are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, Laurel. And if that’s all of you I ever get to see, I’ll be the luckiest man in the world for having seen it. I swallow hard. He wasn’t supposed to make it sweet. He was supposed to leave it dirty and inappropriate, so I could tell myself all he wanted was sex. That all he cared about was getting me naked, or if not that, then at least seeing me naked. Instead, he turned it sweet. And I couldn’t tell myself any lies to keep me on my high horse.
