Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Writerly Identities in Beur Fiction and Beyond

Download or read book Writerly Identities in Beur Fiction and Beyond written by Laura Reeck and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011-02-11 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writerly Identities in Beur Fiction and Beyond explores the Beur/banlieue literary and cultural field from its beginnings in the 1980s to the present. It examines a set of postcolonial Bildungsroman novels by Azouz Begag, Farida Belghoul, Le la Sebbar, Sa d Mohamed, Rachid Dja dani, and Mohamed Razane. In these novels, the central characters are authors who struggle to find self-identity and a place in the world through writing and authorship. The book thus explores the different ways all these novels relate the process of 'becoming' to the process of writing. Neither is straightforward as the author-characters struggle to put their lives into words, settle upon a genre of writing, and adopt an authorial persona. Each chapter of Writerly Identities in Beur Fiction and Beyond focuses on a given author's own relationship to writing before assessing his or her use of the author-character as a proxy. In so doing, the study as a whole explores a set of literary questions (genre, textual authority, reception) and engages them against the backdrop of socio-cultural challenges facing contemporary French society. These include debates on education, cultural literacy, diversity and equal opportunity, and the banlieue environment. Finally, it argues in relation to the authors and novels in question for the particular relevance of 'rooted and vernacular' cosmopolitanism, which suggests both that exploration of the world must begin at home and that stories are crucial for such explorations.

Book Autobiography and Independence

Download or read book Autobiography and Independence written by Debra Kelly and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: InAutobiography and Independence, Debra Kelly examines four accomplished Francophone North African writers—Mouland Feroan, Assia Djebar, Albert Memmi, and Abdelkeacute;bir Khatibi—to illuminate the complex relationship of a writer's work to cultural and national histories. The legacies of colonialism and the difficulties of nationalism run throughout all four writers' works, yet in their striking individuality, the four demonstrate the ways in which such heritages are refracted through a writer's personal history. This book will be of interest to students of Francophone literature, colonialism, and African history and culture.

Book Textualizing the Immigrant Experience in Contemporary Quebec

Download or read book Textualizing the Immigrant Experience in Contemporary Quebec written by Susan Ireland and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration to Qu'ebec has led to the decline of the idea of the homogenous national identity within French-language literary production and the creation of a new literature of multiple Queb'ecois identities, according to editors Ireland and Proulx. Concepts of diversity and hybridity run throughout the 16 essays contained here, which seek to collectively explore the way immigrant writers position themselves in relation to Qu'eb'ecois literature and society. A few essays explore the general contours of Qu'eb'ecois cinema and theater in relation to these questions, but the majority are devoted to more focused examinations of particular writers of novels, short stories, and poems.

Book Love and Sexuality

Download or read book Love and Sexuality written by Sarah F. Donachie and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume are selected from the proceedings of the Love and Sexuality conference held at the University of Leeds in 2002. They bring together a cross-section of new directions in the study of love and sexuality currently being explored in French Studies. The central focus of the collection is the representation of love, desire, erotica and sexuality in the couple, in particular in relation to depictions of women. The contributions share a common concern with problematising issues of love and sexuality across various disciplines, focusing on literary texts, cinema, gender studies, theatre studies, history, visual iconography and cultural studies, and ranging from the sixteenth century to the present day.

Book Migrancy and Multilingualism in World Literature

Download or read book Migrancy and Multilingualism in World Literature written by K. Alfons Knauth and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2016 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the third in a series of four on the general issue of Multilingualism in World Literature, is focused upon the relationship between Migrancy and Multilingualism, including its aquatic, terrestrian and globalizing imagery and ideology. The cover picture Wandering Tongues, an iconic translation of the book's title, evokes one of the paradigmatic figures of migrancy and multilingualism: the migrations of the early Mexican peoples and their somatic multi-lingualism as represented in their glyphic scripts and iconography. The volume comprises studies on the literary, linguistic and graphic representation of various kinds of migrancy in significant works of African, American, Asian and European literature, as well as a study on the literary archetype of human errancy, the Homeric Odyssey, mapped along its periplum and metamorphosis in world literature. Ping-hui Liao is Chuan Lyu Endowed Chair Professor and Head of Cultural Studies at the Literature Department of the University of California in San Diego (USA). K. Alfons Knauth is Professor of Romance Philology at the Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum (Germany). The introduction and five of the twelve chapters are in English; the rest are in German, French, Italian, and Spanish. (Series: poethik polyglott, Vol. 3) [Subject: Literature]

Book Schreiben auf der Grenze

Download or read book Schreiben auf der Grenze written by Beatrice Schuchardt and published by Böhlau Verlag Köln Weimar. This book was released on 2006 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Immigration Integration and Education

Download or read book Immigration Integration and Education written by Oakleigh Welply and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2023 Globalisation and Education SIG Best Book Award at CIES 2023! Immigration, Integration and Education offers a unique comparative analysis of the views and experiences of children of immigrants in school in France and England. It showcases how the theorization of children’s narratives can offer new methodological tools and insights in comparative education and help understand the different role of educational systems and discourses around issues of immigration, integration, race, language and religion. Presenting an in-depth analysis of children’s own narratives, this book offers a close comparative examination of the French and English educational systems, and the ways in which they impact on the experiences and identities of children of immigrants. The narratives of the children reveal the multiple forms of othering, discrimination and exclusion that shape their experiences in school, but also the multiple strategies they deploy to navigate these complex educational landscapes. It stresses that beyond national ideologies and philosophies of integration, structural and cultural aspects need to be explored to understand the role played by schools in the inclusion of immigrant populations. This book is an essential resource for academics, researchers and graduate students in the fields of sociology of education, migration studies, intercultural education, educational policy and comparative and international education. It will also appeal to those who are committed to addressing inequalities and discrimination in education.

Book Revisiting the Self

Download or read book Revisiting the Self written by Charalambos Tsekeris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who am I? Or, even more curiously, who are you? These are questions about the self – that aspect of who we are that we believe defines, or at least describes, each of us. The self is not merely an internal creation, however. Family, friends, colleagues, and acquaintances all contribute to who we are, and more importantly, they help to shape who we think we are. In this innovative and thought-provoking book, the various social aspects of the self and its construction are imaginatively explored. Such explorations can seem abstractly academic, but they carry great significance. Knowledge of how the self is constructed has many implications for most social processes, for example, understanding the volatility of the notion of self that can provide the basis for terrorist radicalisation, can generate destructive suicidal tendencies, or can foment aggressive national identities. This interdisciplinary collection is relevant not only for theoretical and methodological elaborations, but also for more practical considerations. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Contemporary Social Science, and two articles from Self and Identity.
