On observe aujourd'hui en France, un intérêt croissant pour ces animaux, d'espèces et de variétés multiples dont l'attrait est d'autant plus important qu'ils évoquent l'exotisme. Ce nouvel enthousiasme s'accompagne malheureusement de nouveaux dangers. Ainsi, parallèlement à cette demande accrue, le trafic d'espèces prolifère, impliquant nécessairement une menace d'extinction pour certaines espèces. Les importations de masse font de nombreuses victimes, tout comme les séjours inadéquats, chez des propriétaires qui méconnaissent le mode de vie de l'espèce. En outre, les abandons fréquents de ces animaux exotiques participent directement au risque de marronnage, mettant en péril le biotope naturel. Les risques ne concernent pas uniquement les animaux : ils touchent aussi les nouveaux acquéreurs, de bien des manières : zoonoses, maladies émergentes ou ré-émergentes, apparition de nouvelles allergies mais aussi griffures, morsures, envenimations et conséquences, liées à la mauvaise manipulation et à la mauvaise connaissance de ces animaux. Face à une prise en charge sanitaire actuellement difficile, le rôle des acteurs de santé est donc primordial. Vétérinaires, médecins et pharmaciens doivent prendre conscience de ce nouveau phénomène, permettant d'améliorer la prévention, de ne plus laisser échapper un diagnostic, et de participer activement à l'information du public.

The herpetological literature are difficult to access (let alone read) and are scattered through many prominent and eclectic journals and in the lay literature. While older diagnoses often have not stood the test of time, the clarity of report descriptions usually allows confident identification of the underlying pathology.
