Book excerpt: THERE is no one in the history of the French Revolution who has been more eagerly canonized than Madame Tallien; yet according to L. Gastine, there is no one in that history who merited canonization so little. He has therefore set himself the task of dissipating the mass of legend and sentiment that has gathered round the memory of "La Belle Tallien" and of presenting her to our eyes as she really was. The result of his labour is a volume, which combines the scrupulous exactness of conscientious research with the richness and glamour of a romance. In the place of the beautiful heroic but purely imaginary figure of popular tradition, we behold a woman, dowered indeed with incomparable loveliness, but utterly unmoral, devoid alike of heart and soul, who readily and repeatedly prostituted her personal charms for the advancement of her selfish and ignoble aims. Though Madame Tallien is the central figure of the book, the reader is introduced to many other personages who played famous or infamous roles in the contemporary social or political arena, and the volume, which is enriched by a number of interesting portraits, throws a new and valuable light on this stormy and perennially fascinating period of French history. * * * * * "Aside from its ruthless dissection of its chief figure, the volume is invaluable for its many sidelights on the principal actors in the French revolution and for its vignettes of the social life of that period. The author's attitude is so clearly one of investigation that the book is somewhat marred for the casual reader by his discussion of the veracity of many small points, but for the student his critical attitude cannot help attracting Interest." -Boston Transcript

Book Liberty Equality Fashion The Women Who Styled the French Revolution

Download or read book Liberty Equality Fashion The Women Who Styled the French Revolution written by Anne Higonnet and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three women led a fashion revolution and turned themselves into international style celebrities. Joséphine Bonaparte, future Empress of France; Térézia Tallien, the most beautiful woman in Europe; and Juliette Récamier, muse of intellectuals, had nothing left to lose. After surviving incarceration and forced incestuous marriage during the worst violence of the French Revolution of 1789, they dared sartorial revolt. Together, Joséphine and Térézia shed the underwear cages and massive, rigid garments that women had been obliged to wear for centuries. They slipped into light, mobile dresses, cropped their hair short, wrapped themselves in shawls, and championed the handbag. Juliette made the new style stand for individual liberty. The erotic audacity of these fashion revolutionaries conquered Europe, starting with Napoleon. Everywhere a fashion magazine could reach, women imitated the news coming from Paris. It was the fastest and most total change in clothing history. Two centuries ahead of its time, it was rolled back after only a decade by misogynist rumors of obscene extravagance. New evidence allows the real fashion revolution to be told. This is a story for our time: of a revolution that demanded universal human rights, of self-creation, of women empowering each other, and of transcendent glamor

Book Portraiture and Politics in Revolutionary France

Download or read book Portraiture and Politics in Revolutionary France written by Amy Freund and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraiture and Politics in Revolutionary France challenges widely held assumptions about both the genre of portraiture and the political and cultural role of images in France at the beginning of the nineteenth century. After 1789, portraiture came to dominate French visual culture because it addressed the central challenge of the Revolution: how to turn subjects into citizens. Revolutionary portraits allowed sitters and artists to appropriate the means of representation, both aesthetic and political, and articulate new forms of selfhood and citizenship, often in astonishingly creative ways. The triumph of revolutionary portraiture also marks a turning point in the history of art, when seriousness of purpose and aesthetic ambition passed from the formulation of historical narratives to the depiction of contemporary individuals. This shift had major consequences for the course of modern art production and its engagement with the political and the contingent.

Book Josephine

Download or read book Josephine written by Andrea Stuart and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-05-16 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘It’s a story worthy of a blockbuster novel, and it’s all true. Oodles of sex, passion, adultery, media hype, decadence, plots, murder, mayhem, anguish and betrayal fill these pages . . . an enjoyable, well-researched book; I didn’t want to reach the end’ Edwina Currie, New Statesman Books of the Year One of the most potent icons of female sexuality, Josephine has largely been reduced to an empty cipher, wife to her more famous husband and the butt of one of the oldest jokes around. Yet as Andrea Stuart shows, the girl who grew up on the beautiful island of Martinique endured Caribbean slave revolts, an arranged marriage, and the threat of the guillotine before she even met the man who made her Empress of France. In the grip of turbulent times, Josephine used her intelligence and her allure to forge her way in a Paris that raged and fought and danced its way through revolution and empire. This is the thrilling story of her strength, survival and ultimate transformation.
