Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptions of New Genera and Species of Coleoptera, Vol. 4 It contains descriptions of ten new genera and 173 species. All the new genera, and 140 Of the species, are the result Oi Mr. T. Hall's Skill and untiring perseverence, during the winter as well as the more favourable and pleasanter collecting seasons. Mr. A. E. Brookes, Of Mount Albert, discovered eleven, Mr. A. Philpott, of Invercargill, Six, Mr. H. W. Sim monds, of Wellington, Six, Mr. J. H. Lewis, one the remainder belong to my own collection. The delay In publishing my last paper, the work Of 1914, added greatly to the difficulties encountered when investigating the structural details of the species enumerated in the following list. Only those actually engaged in scientific work of this kind can form any idea of the complications created by inability to refer to printed descriptions Of previously named members of an Order now known to exceed four thousand species. Even the nomenclature, especially when species belong to genera represented in other parts of the world, has become a Very troublesome undertaking. Book Coleopterological Notices Vol 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Coleopterological Notices Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by Thomas Lincoln Casey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-26 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coleopterological Notices, Vol. 5 In bringing together a number of short studies of our North American Coleoptera under the above title, the methods and objects held in view in the other parts of the present series are continued. The systematic revisions do not pretend to approach completeness, and are merely efforts to indicate the probable interrelationships of the species, based upon such material as it has been found possible to gather together. New forms are continually being brought to light, which sometimes tend to alter previously formed conceptions of specific limits, or to destroy or modify the value of characters assumed as the bases and criteria of classification. This is the natural outcome of all endeavors to evolve the laws of complicated affinities from inadequate data, but, at the same time, it is not always necessary or advisable to defer the announcement of such apparent truths as we have been able to discover with the material at our disposal; if carefully conducted, I believe that they may, and generally do, lead onward and upward. Book Catalogue of the Coleoptera of America North of Mexico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catalogue of the Coleoptera of America North of Mexico Classic Reprint written by Charles William Leng and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Coleoptera of America, North of Mexico The aim Of this catalogue is to enumerate systematically all the Species of Coleoptera described prior to January 1, 1919, which occur in America, north of Mexico, Greenland included; with consecutive numbers, synonyms, citation of original description, and an indication of distribution. An effort has been made to arrange the species in genera, tribes, families, superfamilies and series, in accordance with the most recent works on classification; an explanation of the difficulty of doing so in a satisfactory manner follows this preface. No attempt has been made to determine the validity of the numerous Specific names proposed by recent authors. Numbered names indicate species described and unquestioned in print. A letter, a, b, etc., following the numeral indicates variety, subspecies, race, etc. Names proposed by one author and disputed by another, are usually unnumbered, but are sometimes treated as varieties. Synonyms are always unnumbered, but the reader must guard against regarding unnumbered names as being invariably synonyms, for they often represent forms which, to their authors, seemed worthy of a name. The names of authors are usually abbreviated to the first three or four letters of their names; the few cases which are differently treated are explained below in the list of Signs and abbreviations used. Authors' names are usually in parenthesis if the species was originally described in a different genus; the correct placing of the parenthesis involved reference to many books and is not entirely complete. The citations are indicated by figures following the author's name; the first two are the final figures of the year in which the description was published; the remainder, separated by a hyphen, give the page on which the description occurs. In conjunction with the chrono logical list of each author's papers at the end of the book, the citation is thus given in the most condensed form possible. The distribution is indicated by the usual geographical abbreviations (explained below) for the localities given in original descriptions and in various faunal lists. Intermediate localities have Usually been omitted to save space, but particular care has been taken to include references to the extremities of the area covered, e. G., Newfoundland, Alaska. Book Memoirs on the Coleoptera Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Memoirs on the Coleoptera Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Thos L. Casey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs on the Coleoptera, Vol. 1 Another mistake frequently made, and a very serious one, is in assuming that nearly all exotic forms can be forced into the genera of purely European species. Some genera are common to Europe and America, but the isolation of the latter region since the middle Tertiary has sufficed for the evolution of many distinct types, so that at present there are a great many more endemic American genera than of those common to the two continents. The same remark applies as well to the species, the least resemblance between species of the two continents sufficing some superficial observers for a verdict of identity, which is false as a rule. There are some species common to America and Europe but not many, and they constitute an exceedingly small proportion of the whole number known; moreover virtually all such are likely to be cosmopolitan. Download or read book Memoirs on the Coleoptera Vol 4 written by Thomas Lincoln Casey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs on the Coleoptera, Vol. 4: 1913 Our Cicindelidae have been considered more or less seriously by a number of authors recently, but the Carabidae have been singu larly neglected - even those genera composed of conspicuous species. No good tabular key to the species of Cambus or Calosoma, as represented in our fauna, has ever been published, and there is no evidence to show that the material in most of our rather numerous collections has been so much as carefully observed or accurately segregated into specific forms. No new Nebm'a has been brought to notice for nearly a generation and the same statement can be made regarding numerous other important genera. All this points only too clearly to the paucity of workers and the vast field that there is to cover. The active describers and classifiers of our Coleoptera as a life specialty, from Thomas Say to the present time, could be counted on the fingers of both hands, with some to spare. It is very remarkable that a subject so fascinating, so broadening to the mind and withal so accessible to everyone, should be so disregarded, ignored or even ridiculed by the vast majority of educated mankind.
