Book State Repression and the Labors of Memory

Download or read book State Repression and the Labors of Memory written by Elizabeth Jelin and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hearing the news from South America at the turn of the millennium can be like traveling in time: here are the trials of Pinochet, the searches for "the disappeared" in Argentina, the investigation of the death of former president Goulart in Brazil, the Peace Commission in Uruguay, the Archive of Terror in Paraguay, a Truth Commission in Peru. As societies struggle to come to terms with the past and with the vexing questions posed by ineradicable memories, this wise book offers guidance. Combining a concrete sense of present urgency and a theoretical understanding of social, political, and historical realities, State Repression and the Labors of Memory fashions tools for thinking about and analyzing the presences, silences, and meanings of the past. With unflappable good judgment and fairness, Elizabeth Jelin clarifies the often muddled debates about the nature of memory, the politics of struggles over memories of historical injustice, the relation of historiography to memory, the issue of truth in testimony and traumatic remembrance, the role of women in Latin American attempts to cope with the legacies of military dictatorships, and problems of second-generation memory and its transmission and appropriation. Jelin's work engages European and North American theory in its exploration of the various ways in which conflicts over memory shape individual and collective identities, as well as social and political cleavages. In doing so, her book exposes the enduring consequences of repression for social processes in Latin America, and at the same time enriches our general understanding of the fundamentally conflicted and contingent nature of memory. A timely exploration of the nature ofmemory and its political uses.

Book The Young Vincent Massey

Download or read book The Young Vincent Massey written by Claude Bissell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1981-12-15 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Vincent Massey, youth was a period of protest and emerging public fame. He broke with his strong family traditions of Methodist piety and American ties. He became known as a patron of the arts, innovator, politician, and diplomat. This volume begins with his prosperous Victorian childhood and carries through days as a student and wartime officer. He plans Hart House, which becomes a cultural centre. Promised a cabinet post, he runs for Parliament and is defeated. Instead, he is sent to Washington as Canada’s first minister there, and achieves brilliant success. He is prominent in educational circles; he helps to reorganize the Liberal party, presses for progressive policies, and flirts with the idea of replacing Mackenzie King. The book ends in 1935 as he sails to London as his country’s high commissioner. He considers it his first major job. In between he writes poetry—usually light, sometimes venom-tipped. He acts, and directs plays. He sponsors a string quartet of international stature. He marries Alice Parkin, a handsome woman of strong convictions, and with her builds a country home near Port Hope, Ontario. He becomes a leading collector of modern Canadian art, and is involved with the painter David Milne. The book is as well a history of the people and ideas which influenced the young Massey—family, teachers, friends, associates. One chapter is given to his relations with Mackenzie King—each of them convinced of his own rightness but separated by fundamental differences, loud in protestations of friendship but nourishing an inner contempt for one another. Claude Bissell has built this complex and absorbing portrait from the unpublished papers of Vincent Massey and members of his circle, diaries of King and other politicians, memories of artists and musicians. He writes with vigour and elegance, quoting extensively from private records and letters, coining epigrams of his own. His portrait is sympathetic but not uncritical, with plenty of scope for the reader to make his own judgements. This is the first of two volumes about one of Canada’s best known and least understood figures—statesman, cultural advocate, patron, family man, and first native governor-general.

Book excerpt: This is a great read for our generation as it embodies, what life was like for black kids up and down the country during the 70's. I always remember, seeing him, driving through Birmingham in his VW Cabriolet convertible. He has taken his toasting talents around the world representing his upbringing and culture, truly a pioneer for toasting about "Roots and Culture" but from a British-Jamaican aspect rather than the other way round. This book, is a must-read for anyone growing up in Britain in the inner Cities of all cultures. -- Dennis Seaton, Record Producer, Musical Youth

Book excerpt: USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Tracy Lorraine brings you the next installment of her new dark mafia, high school bully romance series. I should have known better than to play with fire... I'd been burned by Theo Cirillo enough to know that I should have seen this coming. He loved to show me his merciless side, but I couldn't stay away from the deviant even if I wanted to. A prisoner of my own making, playing a game without knowing all the rules. Until the lies he'd been telling, the secrets he'd been keeping began to unravel around us. He's the only person I trusted with the truth about my past, but my confession was all for nothing. He never cared. He already knew. He was only manipulating me. Using me. I was nothing more than a job. A nut he had to crack. And he split me right open, but he's about to get a shock because I'm not the kind of girl to roll over and take it. I'm Emmie Ramsey. And I'm about to make him pay for ever trying to play me. Dear reader, Deviant Princess is the second book in Emmie and Theo's deviant trilogy and the fifth book in my dark mafia, high school romance series Knight's Ridge Empire.
