Historical connections are made through narrative story telling that brings into vivid light a period in the South that describes family, culture, color, race, religion, economics, opportunities, disadvantages and more. Valvier Latease Harris Bright details her life from childhood to adulthood, from Knoxville, Tennessee to Montgomery, Alabama. Many from both the North and the South, black or white, who were born in the forties through the sixties, will recognize similar experiences and cultural touchstones including segregation and the civil rights movement. Bright chronicles her personal journey from childhood relationships through marriage, childbirth and the death of both parents that transcends all ages. It is an inspiring, provocative and endearing journey. "She has crafted well, a compelling and sensitive story descriptive of life for many, no matter what city or state! Her account of the meaningful journey travelled while in Montgomery was so nostalgic for those of us who encountered and can recall places, events and moments in time so vividly painted through her words." –Sheyann Webb Christburg Civil Rights Activist and Co-author, Selma, Lord, Selma "The telling of family history is sacred, in that it honors those who have come before and keeps them alive for those who will follow. Valvier Bright's reverent exploration of her own life story and family roots, range across multiple states, countries, and continents and lovingly paints a portrait that will enrich any reader." – Horace Randall Williams Editor and Author, Montgomery, Alabama

Book Little a and the Other Side of Teaching

Download or read book Little a and the Other Side of Teaching written by Daniel Rolling and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TEACHING IS A GIFT, a very special gift. I believe it is a part of a person’s DNA. There are a lot of very smart people who cannot teach because they lack this genetic part of their DNA profile. These people make great doctors, business leaders, lawyers, carpenters, etc., but not teachers. Teachers are people who can create magic and excitement in the lives of children, making them want to learn. Once a child wants to learn, a teacher’s job is almost over. I taught in the inner-city. Inner-city teachers go where most teachers do not want to go. However, I loved every day. This book, with just a few exceptions, is a true story of my journey. I couldn’t make up stories this good, this funny, or this sad. So, follow me to the other side.

Book Crazy Like a Fox

Download or read book Crazy Like a Fox written by Ben Chavis and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiring true story of "one of the country's finest educators" (National Review) and the school he changed forever. Under the leadership of highly unorthodox principal Dr. Ben Chavis, Oakland's American Indian Public Charter School was hailed as an "education miracle" by governor Arnold Schwarzenegger after it was transformed from a failing "nuisance" into one of the best public middle schools in the nation. This is the story of that transformation and of a man who dared to be different. With his rigorous, no-nonsense approach, Dr. Chavis debunks the myth that poor, minority, inner-city schools have little chance at academic excellence. Focusing on back-tobasics ideals, he has created a structured educational model that, combined with the enthusiasm of his students and teachers, delivers astounding results. In Crazy Like a Fox, Dr. Chavis recounts how he did it-in his own words and through the stories of the extraordinary young people he's helped.

Download or read book Fount Of Blessings written by D.T. Christian and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is a personal testimony of God's amazing and intimate work in my life. Despite a haunting childhood and struggles in my adult years, God has blessed my journey tremendously. Even though I have been a Christian for most of my days, there were decades that all I could see were the trials. I felt distanced from God, yet, at the same time I knew that He was my only hope. So I blamed myself for the disconnection and my many shortcomings. I tried hard to be a "good Christian" but continually failed, damaging my marriage and maligning my parenting. Counseling had helped some, but turmoil still raged within me. I sank increasingly deeper into depression and anxiety while striving to be everything I thought others expected of me. Yet, all the while God was conscious of my struggles. Even more, He was actively interceding on my behalf. Well before I was conscious of it, God was sustaining me through the turmoil and fortifying me for my biggest challenge to date. When I felt at my weakest, God proved faithful to His promise of comfort and strength. Not only did He carry me, He championed my victory over the hold that darkness once had on my past. In an amazing way that only God could orchestrate, He redeemed my existence and set me free with new found joy and purpose. I now feel His love, His grace, and His power in a way that I never could before. The journey was challenging to say the least, but I wouldn't trade this walk with God for anything. My hope is that those who read my story will find encouragement and leave its pages in awe of the Great Father God, Savior Son, and Empowering Holy Spirit, Who are worthy of all praise.
