Book excerpt: Every day of the year carries the memory of great and terrible events. From the founding of Rome to the 21st century's war on terror, History's Daybook presents a vivid, day-by-day perspective on 2,500 years of human history through the medium of 366 quotations, each of which is tied to the anniversary of a celebrated historical event, capturing its essence with the immediacy of the eye-witness or the narrative flair of the chronicler. In History's Daybook, every day becomes a window on the past: on March 15, 44 BC, blood flows in the Roman Senate as Julius Caesar falls victim to the thrusting daggers of Brutus and his co-conspirators; May 1, 1851 brings a visit to London's Great Exhibition in the company of the novelist Charlotte Bront&ë; on June 28, 1919, in the Hall of Mirrors of the Palace of Versailles, brokenspirited, German delegates sign the Treaty that brings the Great War to its fateful conclusion; on August 16, 1665, we walk the silent streets of plague-ravaged London with the diarist Samuel Pepys; and on September 11, 2001 we watch in horror as the Twin Towers topple and the world changes forever. History's Daybook embraces a wide range of voices, moods, and registers, from the powerful to the impoverished, the revolutionary to the reactionary, the propagandist to the idealist, and the joyful to the grief-stricken. Both engrossing anthology and informative overview of world history, History's Daybook offers the reader entertainment and instruction in equal measure: it is the ideal gift book for the history buff.

Book excerpt: This incredible biography gives us a deep insight into to life of the royal family during the greatest era in British History! Edward VII (1841-1910), the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Edward was related to royalty throughout Europe. Before his accession to the throne, he was heir apparent and held the title of Prince of Wales for longer than any of his predecessors. During the long reign of his mother, he was largely excluded from political power, and came to personify the fashionable, leisured elite. He travelled throughout Britain performing ceremonial public duties, and represented Britain on visits abroad. His tours of North America in 1860 and the Indian subcontinent in 1875 were popular successes, but despite public approval his reputation as a playboy prince soured his relationship with his mother. Book The People s Sculptor

Download or read book The People s Sculptor written by John Stansfeld and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2013-10-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the life and work the life of Scottish sculptor William Lamb (1893 - 1951) this is a story of indomitable will and irrepressible creativity. The son of an alcoholic father and a survivor of the 'lost generation' who came of age in 1914, it was with courage and determination that Lamb overcame the obstacles life put in his path. Traumatised in the trenches at Passchendaele during the First World War and blighted by depression, Lamb was also severely wounded in his right hand. With characteristic resolve he retrained with his left hand - at Edinburgh College of Art and the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Despite the uncertainty of an art market rocked by world war, Lamb established his reputation in Montrose with sculptures of the townspeople and fishermen of east Scotland. He produced prints, water colours and drawings to help fund his sculpture. Occasionally he undertook commissions and in 1932 he completed portrait bronzes of the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. The Second World War dried up his supplies of materials, so he turned to wood carving and, when death finally put an end to his creativity, he left a large collection of his artwork as a legacy to the Scottish people.
