Excerpt: ... sions and weight; 100 pounder, length 42 inches, diameter 12 inches, weight empty 150 pounds. The thickness of these cases was at first required to be from inch to inch, with reinforces for screw holes, but with this thickness cases frequently broke while being put together, and defective castings often appeared. For these reasons, the thickness of the case was increased from inch and inch, to inch, which of course increased the weight of the case. This pattern of case was issued to the service from February 20 until April 6, 1872. Case No. 4. In February, 1872, the case described as No. 2, was so changed that it is classed as a new pattern. Sample. It was made central fire, by first, removing the gauze fuze tube, and closing the hole with an iron screw plug, and second, by removing the central tube which shipped on the spar rod, cutting it the same length as the case, perforating it with flame holes, wrapping it with gauze, closing the outer end with a screw plug, placing a bouching in the inner end for a water cap, and then returning it to its former position. Wrought iron bands with handles were fitted to these cases, so that they could be handled and lashed on to a secondary spar, the same as No. 3. Six 100 pounders of this pattern were issued May 30, 1872, and then their issue ceased, but 50 and 75 pounders were issued for boats until July 22, 1872. Case No. 5. In June, 1872, the construction of another pattern of torpedo case was commenced. This pattern with some slight changes from time to time, has been in use ever since, and is the present regulation case. Sample. The case proper is cylindrical with hemispherical ends, and cast in one piece. There are two axial holes in the end, for the introduction of a...

Book excerpt: The torpedo was the greatest single game-changer in the history of naval warfare. For the first time it allowed a small, cheap torpedo-firing vessel—and by extension a small, minor navy—to threaten the largest and most powerful warships afloat. The traditional concept of seapower, based on huge fleets of expensive capital ships, required radical rethinking because of this important naval weapon. This book is a broadranging international history of the weapon, tracing not only its origins and technical progress down to the present day, but also its massive impact on all subsequent naval wars. Torpedo contains much new technical information that has come to light over the past thirty years and covers all of the improved capabilities of the weapon. Heavily illustrated with photos and technical drawings this is a book no enthusiast or historian can afford to miss.

This valuable reference lists the ships of the U.S. Navy and Confederate Navy during the Civil War and the years immediately following - a significant period in the evolution of warships, the use of steam propulsion, and the development of ordnance. Civil War Navies provides a wealth and variety of material not found in other books on the subject and will save the reader the effort needed to track down information in multiple sources. Each ship's size and time and place of construction are listed, along with particulars of naval service. The author provides historical details that include actions fought, damage sustained, prizes taken, ships sunk, and dates in and out of commission, as well as information about when the ship left the Navy, names used in other services, and its ultimate fate. 140 photographs, including one of the Confederate cruiser Alabama recently uncovered by the author further contribute to this indispensable volume. This definitive record of Civil War ships updates the author's previous work and will find a lasting place among naval reference works.
