Book Studies on the Structure of the Fish School

Download or read book Studies on the Structure of the Fish School written by Charles Marcus Breder and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One. The organization of a school of Jenkinsia is based on visual cues which become inoperative at just about the visual limit in man under certain conditions or before it under others. 2. Normally a school of Jenkinsia maintains a specified distance from solid vertical objects such as piles, and approaches twice as close to light-colored ones as to dark-colored. 3. The formation of a mill in Jenkinsia, typically based on extrinsic factors, may evidently under certain conditions be based on strictly intrinsic factors. 4. A mill of 3 feet in diameter of about 500 fish had members at the periphery traveling at about 3 inches per second. 5. Such a mill traveling around the wall of a circular tank traveled at the rate of about 1.4 feet per minute. 6. Individual fish near the center of a mill are more closely spaced than are those at its periphery. 7. A mill passing along a wall moves in a direction that a wheel would in rolling along a similar surface but with many more revolutions than a wheel would show without slipping. 8. Isolation of an individual or a small group for as short a time as a week will cause them to show reluctance to join a larger group. 9. Effects of weather such as rippled surface of the water or passing clouds tend to loosen the school, so that it is found in its most striking cohesive form close to the surface on days of clear skies and no wind. 10. Small differences in water temperature control the form and location of a school to a marked extent, certain isothermal lines acting as an effective barrier to the passage of such schools. 11. Within a school of somewhat mixed sizes there appears to be continual self-sorting, resulting in fish of the most nearly similar sizes being found together. 12. Aggressive behavior and aggregating tendencies are considered in theoretical terms in reference to school formation, simple aggregation, and solitary habits. 13. Further analytical suggestions are indicated with reference to future work extending to greater refinement of method than has been possible up to the present"--P. 25.

Book Biological Invasions and Its Management in China

Download or read book Biological Invasions and Its Management in China written by Fanghao Wan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses invasive-species problems in agriculture, forests and aquatic ecosystems, highlighting the invasive mechanisms and management of the selected invasive species. Biological invasion has become a serious global ecological and economic problem that deserves particular attention from both government officials and scientists. This volume focuses on three key scientific areas: 1) population establishment and spreading mechanisms of the selected invasive species; 2) ecology adaptation, population growth, expansion and evolution of invasive species; and 3) impact of bio-invasion on the ecosystem structure and function at community and ecosystem levels. The presented research will result in techniques for better management of invasive species.

Book Sustainable Pest Management in Date Palm Current Status and Emerging Challenges

Download or read book Sustainable Pest Management in Date Palm Current Status and Emerging Challenges written by Waqas Wakil and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Date palm, Phoenix dactylifera L. (Arecales: Arecaceae), is an important palm species cultivated in the arid regions of the world since pre-historic times and traditionally associated with the life and culture of the people in the Middle-East and North Africa which are the pre-dominant date palm growing regions worldwide. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN estimates that there are over 100 million date palms with an annual production of over 7.5 million tonnes A recent report on the arthropod fauna of date palm, enlists 112 species of insects and mites associated with date palm worldwide including 22 species attacking stored dates. Enhanced monoculture of date palm in several date palm growing countries coupled with climate change, unrestrained use of chemical insecticides and extensive international trade is likely to impact the pest complex and the related natural enemies in the date agro-ecosystems. In view of the importance of date palm as an emerging crop of the future and the need to develop and deploy ecologically sound and socially acceptable IPM techniques, this book aims to comprehensively address issues related to the biology and sustainable management of major insect and mite pests of date palm by assessing the current IPM strategies available, besides addressing emerging challenges and future research priorities. The issues pertaining to the role of semiochemicals in date palm IPM involving new strategies revolving around “attract and kill” and “push-pull” technologies, phytoplasmas and their insect vectors with implications for date palm, innovative methods for managing storage pests of dates and knowledge gaps in devicing sustainable strategies for the management of red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) are also addressed
