Book The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope

Download or read book The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope written by Adolphus William Ward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope: Edited With Notes, and Introductory Memoir In the Text of this edition, Warburton's arrangement has (with a single unimportant exception) been maintained; the remaining pieces have been added from subsequent editions, or, where possible, from earlier sources. Throughout, I have endeavoured to preserve Popes use of capital letters, and of apostrophised syllables; of the former, lest his intentions of emphasis, - of the latter, lest his metrical accuracy, should be unnecessarily obscured. His uncertain spelling, and his frequently perplexing interpunctuation, it seemed useless to reproduce with religious fidelity. Among the Notes will be found all Popes own (marked 'P.'), except in the case of the Dunciad where curtailment was unavoidable. I have not, so far as I am aware, transcribed anything from previous editors without acknowledgment. The extent of my obligations to Mr Carruthers' edition (the only edition of Pope which has any claims to completeness) will therefore be apparent on the surface. For everything enclosed within []'s I am myself responsible; and the quotations which previous editors have successively transcribed I have taken care to verify. In conclusion, I cannot forbear from thanking my accomplished friend, the Rev. Alfred Ainger, for many suggestions whereby he has aided me during pleasant hours spent in common over the following pages. At first, a very cold civility, and nothing else, appeared on either side for Mr. Addison had a natural reserve and gloom at the beginning of an evening, which, by conversation and a glass, brightened into an easy cheerfulness. Book The Works of Alexander Pope Vol 3

Download or read book The Works of Alexander Pope Vol 3 written by Alexander Pope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Alexander Pope, Vol. 3: With a Memoir of the Author, Notes, and Critical Notices on Each Poem Such also is the description of his gothic library, for Cibber troubled not himself with Caxton, Wynkyn, and De Lyra. Tib bald, who was an antiquarian, had collected those curious; Old writers: and to slumber in the Goddess's lap, was adapted to his stupidity, not to the vivacity of his successor. On the whole, the chief fault of the Dunciad, is the violence and vehemence of its satire, and the excessive height to which it is carried; and which therefore I may compare to that marvellous column of boiling water, near Mount Hecla in Iceland, thrown up wards, above ninety feet, by the force of a subterraneous fire. What are the impressions left upon the mind after a perusal of this poem? Contempt, aversion, vexation, and anger. NO sentiments that enlarge, ennoble, move, or mend the heart! Insomuch that I know a person, whose name would be an ornament to these pa pers, if I were suffered to insert it, who, after reading a book ofthe Dunciad, always sooths himself, as he calls it, by turning to a canto in the Fairy Queen. This is not the case in that very de lightful mid beautiful poem, Mac Flecnoe, from which Pope has borrowed so many hints, and images, and ideas. But Dryden's poem was the ofi'spring of contempt, and Pope's of indignation one is full of mirth, and the other of malignity. A vein of plea santry is uniformly preserved through the Whole of Mac Flecnoe, and the piece begins and ends in the same key. It is natural and obvious to borrow a metaphor from music, when we are speak ing of a poem whose versification is particularly and exquisitely sweet and harmonious. The numbers of the Dunciad, by being much laboured, and encumbered with epithets, have something In them of stiffness and harshness. Since the total decay of learning and genius was foretold in the Dunciad, how many very excellent pieces of Criticism, Poetry, History, Philosophy, and Divinity, have appeared in this country, and to what a degree of perfection has almost every art, either useful or elegant, been carried! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope, Vol. 1: With Memoir, Critical Dissertation, and Explanatory Notes It is by rules like these that we ought to judge of pastoral. And since the instructions given for any art are to be de livered as that art is in perfection, they must of necessity be derived from those in whom it is acknowledged so to be. It is therefore from the practice of Theocritus and Virgil (the only undisputed authors of pastoral) that the critics have drawn the foregoing notions concerning it. Download or read book The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope Vol 2 written by Alexander Pope and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope, Vol. 2: With Memoir, Critical Dissertation, and Explanatory Notes N ow, that Pope possessed genius, and. Genius of a high order, we strenuously maintain. But whether this amounted to crea tive power, the highest quality of the poet, is a very different question. In native imagination, that eyesight of the soul, which sees in the rose a richer red, in the sky a deeper azure, in the sea a more dazzling foam, in the stars a softer and more spiritual gold, and in the sky a more dread magnificence than nature ever gave them, that beholds the Ideal always shining through and above the Real, and that lights the poet on to form within a new and more gorgeous nature, the fresh crea tion of his own inspired mind, Pope was not only inferior to Chaucer, Shakspeare, Spenser, and Milton, but to Young, Thomson, Collins, Burns, Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Byron, Coleridge, and many other poets. His native faculty, indeed, seems rather fine than powerful - rather timid than daring, and resembles rather the petal of a rose peeping out into the summer air, which seems scarce warm enough for its shrinking loveliness, than the feather of the wing of a great eagle, dip ping into the night tempest, which raves around the inacces sible rock of his birthplace. He was not eminently original in his thinking. In proof of this, many of those fine senti ments which Pope has thrown into such perfect shape, and to which he has given such dazzling burnish, are found by Wat son (see the Adventurer in Pascal and others. Shakspeare's wisdom, on the other hand, can be traced to Shakspeare's brain, and no further, although he has borrowed the plots of his plays. Who lent Chaucer his pictures, firesh as dewdrops from the womb of the morning? Spenser's Allegories are as native to him as his dreams; and if Milton has now and then carried off a load which belonged to another, it was a load'which only a giant's arm could lift, and which he added to a caravan of priceless wealth, the native inheritance of his own genius.
