Book Notes on the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Alexander Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle, Vol. 1 Having, for these reasons, dispensed with 'introductory Essays, ' I have been obliged to make a good many of the notes somewhat long; and being anxious that every important passage, as it occurred, should there and then impress the student with its full weight - its weight being often the weight of Aristotle's whole Philosophy brought to bear through some technical term - I have not been very careful to avoid repetitions. The quotations from other works of Aristotle, and from Plato, have been printed in full, in order that the junior student may be able to read conveniently, within the limits of these volumes, what he certainly must read, if he is to understand the Ethics in a concrete way as part of Aristotle's entire Philosophy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of Aristotle, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrated With Essays and Notes Author of this work is conscious that in many places it requires re - writing. He would have wished to re-cast especially many parts of the 'essays, ' and to introduce into them the results of fresh reading and thought. But official duties in India have pre cluded him from attempting such a task, and have obliged him to be content with a bare completion of his commentary, by the addition of notes (such as they are) upon the last four books of the Nicomachean Ethics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle: Books I-IV (Omitting 1, 6) And X, 6-9; Translated With a Catechetical Analysis Now it would seem to belong to that which is the most 5 4 supreme and in the truest sense the master art. It is plainly 5 5 politics which answers to this description. For it is this which ordains what sciences there ought to be in states, and what kind different persons should learn, and how far. We see also that the faculties which are held in the highest 6 esteem fall under this, as war, economy, rhetoric. Now since 7 this employs the rest of the practical sciences, and furthermore legislates as to what one ought to do and what one ought to abstain from, the end of this will embrace the ends of the rest, so that this will be the good of man. (for even if it 8 be the same thing for an individual as for a state, at all events that of the state is plainly a greater and more final thing whether to get or keep: for it is matter of thankfulness to secure the good of a single individual, but it is a grander and diviner thing to Secure that of a race or states.) This 5 9 then is the aim of our science, which is a branch of politics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Nicomachean Ethics of Aristotle, Vol. 2 We have said that we must choose the mean, and that the mean is that which the 'right reason' points out. But how is the 'right reason' determined? What makes it the 'right reason'? What is it that 'the right reason' has in view in fixing on this point rather than on that as the mean? The musician, for example, in tuning his instrument, must have some standard of tension before his mind. It is true that the strings must not be too tight or too loose, but just the right tightness. Again, it is true that the patient must get just what a skilful physician would prescribe - neither more nor less: - all this is true, but it is not definite enough. So in morals it is true that we must choose the mean as the right reason directs: but not definite enough. We must know definitely what the right reason is, that is, why, or in relation to what, it is 'right.' We have distinguished the virtues of the soul as virtues of the moral character and virtues of the intellect. We have discussed the moral virtues: let us now discuss the intellectual - but first a few words about the soul generally. We have seen that there are two parts of the soul, the part which has reason, and the irrational part. Now let us divide the part which has reason into (I) that part by which we perceive necessary truth, and (2) that by which we perceive contingent truth: for, as the objects are generically distinct, there must be generically distinct faculties of the soul naturally corresponding to each class of objects, knowledge implying a certain similarity and kinship between faculty and object. Let us call (I) the Scientific Faculty, and (2) the Calculative Faculty, for to deliberate and to calculate is the same thing, and no one deliberates about necessary truths. The best state of each of these faculties will be the virtue of each. We have to discover, then, what is the 'virtue' of each, or the state which enables it to perform its proper function.
